  1. Hi John

I've just amended you last 2 posts to make them 1 - hope that is OK (the Boss has a thing about constant re-quoting  )

Anyway - it makes it more readable. ( Cor - it looks like old Messr's Connell and Jackson really taught me to spell etc. ).

Unfortunately, I'm a little younger than you and Malcolm and I was only in W Crane for a year before you left.

If I remember correctly, it was your year that constructed the metal work plaque that denoted the W Crane moto and it was installed on the side of the Hall/ Gym facing the Head's study. Didn't the Prefects have their own study/mess room directly above the Head's room?

  2. I went to the william crane school.

A few other names from school are Andy Wolfe,Malcolm Pigeon,Martin Andrews, Chirs Goodhall. Some of my teachers from when I was at Crane are: Mr Mayfield (maths),Mr Johnson (english), Mr Jackson (History) Mr Banham (music+maths) Mr Dryden(maths) and Mr Mitcham (woodwork)

Looking forward to your replies (if any) John

    Hi John

If you know Malcolm then you must be around 60 this year. It is Malcolm Pridgeon by the way - my step brother - small world eh!

I went to W Crane 1963 - 67. I remember Mr Dryden, who was our form master from '65 to '67. Other names I remember are Mr Potter, (History), Mr Henson - or Henderson (the Head) Mr Lamb (Music) (next door to Dryden's as we used to call him) Mr Jackson (English and Deputy Head)

  3. We used to use the Cafe back in '85 when the refurbishment of New Castle House was underway.

Shame the Cafe is now closed.

Went into Bunters Cafe on Parliament Street a couple of Saturdays back, as we always do if we are working in the City on a Saturday, and Steve the owner tells me that he has been 'Compulsory Purchased' with a £15k sweetner as the whole building is due for demolition and rebuild. Better take some pictures quick.

  4. How sad, what a good old boy he was, don't tell me it was lung cancer.

Jeff Whitefoot was the alternative sub during the season 66-67, the other one was Alan Hinton. What a great team that was, trouble is, that having brought together a truly world class team, the powers that be weren't prepared to spend any money in developing it, it was madness on the directors part.

There was no first team squad at all, when John Barnwell got seriously injured they spent £100,000 on Jim Baxter, what a joke, he was overweight and drunk half the time, I remember watching him play against Leeds, it was pathetic, Barry Lyons spent most of the match covering for him.

Then let us not forget Joe Bakers replacement, the great Alex Ingram, signed from Ayr United and a complete joke, we used to go and watch the matches in disbelief, we felt sorry for the poor bloke in the end, he was completely out of his depth at that level, but the good old powers that be knew better and picked him for every match, all the time Duncan Mackenzie was lurking in the background, what a state of affairs, are these people still in charge today

    Very interesting.

Now, football is not one of my favourite games - in fact I detest it, but, that aside, am I right in thinking that a famous 'local' footballer had a betting shop in Bingham???

Or am I totally off my trolley???

  5. Recent posts have not been over informative...I've enjoyed going through the older ones. And many times have wished they were not so old, as I'd love to comment on some of the points made.

    Paul.

Just 'BUMP' them back into discussion then Paul. I'm sure no one will mind.

  6. Been at work all day so when I got home and showered at 4pm I said to Mrs Frank 'fancy an early one?'

Well, we were in the Poacher at 5.45 for an hour plus a bit, then into the Fade for a Wheat Beer, caught a bus up to Sherwood, a couple of Nottm Brewery Bitter in the Chestnut Tree and then a walk across to the 'Le Mistral' for a nice glass of Chilean Plonk.

Back home now for some snap before its an early night and then a 5.00am start down to Birmingham for a pre arranged crane lift on to the top of a 7 storey building.

It's all go at the mo!

  7. Reading Sunday's Mail (newspaper) it would appear that, due to the increase in the price of coal, it is now worthwhile opening up old pits to start coal mining again.

UK Coal is spending large amounts of money restoring certain pits back to production.

    Anyone want a job??????

    Recession, what recession?????????

  8. 2 smells do it for me.

Fresh bread baking - brings back memories of mum bringing the loaf out of the oven at the side of the open fire in the front room. Couldn't wait for it to cool so that we could have a slice - and fight over who got the crust!!

Paraffin burning - used to have to fetch it from Prestons the Ironmongers (I think that's what it was called) at the top of Aspley Lane in a gallon tin (blue one that tapered in to a twist stopper at the top. mum used to fill a small stove in the kitchen for heating as this was way before the cenral heating was installed.

    What does it for you??
