[China Street, Bulwell]

Hi

New to the site.

I am trying to track down where I used to live as a child. I lived on China Street, Bulwell at some stage, probably about 1960-63 is. It was not far from Rufford School, which I attended. I remember the street being cobbled and there was a bakery right on the corner. At the back of the houses on the other side of the road was a dyke, the school was on the other side of that.

There was a lampost right outside our front wall, believe we lived at number 24. I remember that when we looked out of the window in our back room, it looked onto a yard that belonged to the next few terraced houses along.

I have checked recent maps, the street dosnt appear to exist anymore. Anyone any ideas/memories of the place? Or does anyone know where I can access any maps showing the street?

Yhe original building is still there, it looks like a town hall

I met my wife at the Embassy in BULWELL IN 1953 Iwas in the army national service on embarkation leave and was posted to Gibraltar the very next day we just had time to swap addresses then I was away for 2 years,but we wrote regularly and met again in 1955 courted for 2 years and married in 1957 ANY OTHER MEMORIES OF THE EMBASY eg MRs Homes and her little stick,or nipping down to ROBINSONS HILL CLUB,for a crafty pint during the interval

I don.t remember the park on Bells lane,most of the youth in the 50's used either Basford Hall" FOWLERS POND" or Cinderhill/Stockhill Park.

Iused to deliver meat on Amesbury Circus one of my customers was mrs timmins,she had 2 daughters GLORIA and MARGARET,I think Margaret married Malc White off Tilbury Rise

Hi I never went to Crane School, but I lived and worked around aspley and broxtowe from 1939-1957,

I had loads of friends who went to Crane School where did your brother live in aspley,Ilived on aspley lane opposite King George 6 playing fields

Anyone remember the Nottingham boxer who used to be the doorman (bouncer) at the Lacarno in the early 60's. m His ring name was Johnny Carrington but I cannot remember his correct surname. He and his family were also barrow boys selling fruit/Veg from a barrow on St Peters Square and Broadmarsh area.

JOHNNY CARRINGTON WAS A GREAT CHARACTER,once a friend a friend for life,in the 1950s I used to play football with him for THURSDAY VILLA in the Notts Thursday league,he was a strong fellow but I never knew him to get aggressive,I used to see him regularly selling his wares on Exchange walk,

he always had time for a chat but had an eye out for the police who moved him on for street trading.

I think John moved out to Clifton in the 1950's I think he was a member of the Larvin family.

Hi I can't be the only one to remember the Crane School dance in the 1950's I would love to hear from any of you that are still around we had some great Saturday night hops.

some people I would like to hear of are joe smith arlene edwards pat birkhead frank farmer noel simms brian bexon john talbot barbara levett paulene hodgkinson margaret timmins and her sister gloria I lost contact with all of these when I went ito the army for my anatioal service.

there were loads more as about 300 went to the dances every Saturday night.

[The Penguin Cafe]

There was another Cafe on Piccadilly in Bulwell run by the Donze? family, they had 2 daughters Jenny and Jackie. Anyone remember this it was opposite the Piccadilly club.

Ireally remember the Penguin and the juke box the Penguin was next to the Olympia,it was a regular meeting place for motorcyclists a few names I remember are Mick Start Malc White Ron Hill,There were lots more but unfortunately a lot had nasty sometimes fatal accidents trying to get to Hucknall Market and back before a record finished on the jukebox

[Old Basford late 50's]

No, can't recall the washer woman as I am not from Old Basford, Dad lived on Vernon Rd Mum at that Bungalow etc, I was always New Basford 1946-1970 till I moved to Western Boulevard but as a kid took to Old Basford visiting friends etc of parents. The pubs I mentioned were favs of maternal grandad so pre 1939 possible well before? Was told of them by mum and sites of such seen on old maps when I was researching for a book I wrote, the Nottingham Road one was on the right heading towards railway after an old bakehouse that stood there till 1990's (?) I got the name wrong re Old English Gentleman

The slaughterhouse on church street was part of the Cinderhill co-op,I used to work there with John Farnsworth, John Pollard and Eric jones we used to slaughter pigs sheep and cattle every Monday,there was also a bakehouse and meat product preparation unit behind the shop. Just up the road from the shop directly opposite the Masons arms there weas a row of terraced cottages occupied by the Cockayne family Irene Cockayne was a lovely young lady keenly courted by many of the local lads (including me)
