hi dicko i remember the picko from when it started in1964 i was resident singer thwere then , it was owned by harry roe a great tenor singer later he sold it to jack packham who turned it into a night club then he in turn sold it to les newcombe and from there it went down hill till iut was shut mainly from protest of noise ect from mick peach who lived then on brooklyn road !!!!!

  2. hy there boris the tramp was chris smith , he lived on albert street and went to highbury school, his mum and dad didnt want him for some unknown reason and he went to live as boy with his grandad at the bottom of albert street at no 94.he was a normal clean decent bot at school but when his grandad died he was forced to leave the house as he was underage to live there alone.his mum and dad although still on albert street hade nothing to do with him and he took to ther streets.tragic really he went down and down he certainly had no money and begged for a living sometimes staying in an old dovecote at the bottom of commercial road which is still there and also living in the woods at bulwell hall park. i know its true that he was turned out of 94 albert street in 1963 because i and my wife moved into that house.. i might add that at the time i was unaware that he had been turned out

  3. hy dave china street was off commercial road , at the bottom of it was richardsons bakery.there was a dyke which ran along the back of the houses which were situated on the left hand side as you walked up china street, over the dyke was the the rufford school playground.the street that ran parallel with china street and led to a quarry was aldgate street and at the bottom of aldgate street was a bookies runners house.one of the residents of china street were a family called WOMBWELL their daughter margaret is landlady of the coopers club on highbury road bulwell and im sure she would gladly tell you anything she knows of china street.

  4. i knew elijah day very well he is actually 64 years old now in fact i had a pint with his son mick tonight!!! the bike men who used the penguin cafe in bulwell in the late fifties and early sixtys were keith thurgood, bruce simms, tony horwood ,howard whysall, arthur atter, the record running bear sung by johnny preston would be put on the juke box and each rider had to go around the market place island and down to cinderhill island ( exactly a mile each way) and back to the penguin before the record had finished playing.
