  1. Remember many years ago, a mate I used to go scuba diving with asked me if I had a christmas tree yet, as we only had a small artificial one I said I wouldn't mind a real one for a change.

Anyway he said he could get some real nice one's very cheap, but if I wanted to go and help him I could have one for free !

Like an idiot off I go to his house near Bulwell, then in his Land Rover, me thinking we were going to a farm of some sort.

We ended up at the back of Paplewick pumping station somewhere, he hands me a pruning saw and heads off into the bushy area and starts chopping down the fir tree saplings, never been so scared in my life, especially with the police headquarters just up the road !

Got my tree but never again, and the bloody mess it made as all the needles started to drop off was awfull.

If you're out there Steve, hope you never got caught ! cos I know he did it every year the same.

  2. I was under the impression that Redmayne & Todd owned Gunn & Moore ? or vica versa, G&M are still in Nottm as I've just Googled it, somwhere on Trent lane Colwick.

I did a small job at their bat factory many years ago, and it used to be somewhere on Canal street but further towards Lenton end from memory.

I also did some work in the shop. (as a sparky) I'm sure both jobs were from the same company origin. Family owned I think.

  3. Just remembered, some barsteward stole my side panels off my Lambretta one night outside our old house on Gladstone street! Got a new set from Joselyn's on my insurance but had to store the scoot in the front room after that !

But had to get the union jacks repainted at my own expense !

Was a real pain getting it up and down the steps at the front door.

  4. I used to go sailboarding in the uk a lot, and remember one christmas morning after the kids had opened their pressie's My lovely other half had a bit of a moan at me, so I got me gear out the garage, stuck it in me combi van and headed down to Colwick ponds for a bit of sailing.

Only problem it was freezing the night before and the west lake was frozen all around the edges.

Plan B, fire up the gas heater and the kettle, in the back of my campervan, sat and enjoyed my cuppa and potnoodle in peace ! Lol.

Did go back after lunch and all was forgiven !

  5. Bonds butchers at top of Carlton hill used to do a nice pork pie. Dont know if they are still there though.

    Also Mick Robinson in Netherfield.

Had a nice Melton Mowbray pie at a small pub in Leicestershire last year, very tasty.

I miss me English pork pies, we've had the odd pretender here in oz trying to make em, but nothing compares to the old english one's.

  6. For me as I grow older, I am coming to hate christmas ! Dont get me wrong, I still think christmas is for kids, grandkids and families but,

We're not really religious people , (I have my personal beliefs) but cannot stand all the hoo hah for what is really a 3 day holiday break for most. (sorry if I offend any religious fanatics out there)

My missus is terrible, and goes crazy trying to buy every man and his dog a card and pressie, and probably takes her 6 months to recover from it financially.Half of which is not appreciated, not wanted or just ignored.

Kids to day seem to have every gizmo in the book and finding a suitable gift for arrogant little 9 year olds, with everything already, is a nightmare !

She goes mad buying hams, legs of roast beef, kilo's of prawns etc. we eat like pigs, regret it afterwards, make new resolutions to not do it next year, spend 3 months trying to lose the extra kilo's, only to do it all again !

Maybe i'm just turning into mr Scrooge ! Humbug !

Roll on the day after boxing day and I've got another 360 odd days before I have to go through it all again.

  7. I think to "Boil" a beatiful piece of roast rib of of beef, in anything, would be sacrilege IMO ! but thats just me, i don't like corned beef much or any type of pot roasts for that matter.

Have heard of Coca cola chicken though but not for me again as I can't abide the stuff ! Coke that is.

My missus used to drink gallons of Pepsi Max and got addicted to it I feel sure, she still takes a small glass to bed with her at night !

    Yuk !

Give me a cup of tea any day.

  8. If you pick your joint well, ours always seem to come with a little fat which renders out in the pan, but you can always add a little lard or even veggie oil prior to cooking.

We buy a Maggi gravy mix here in oz, it comes in several flavours, but the rich meat one seems pretty good so we use that, but you can't have it both ways, unless you do do two joints   you'll have plenty left for sandwiches then !

  9. Not saying the Saville affair did not happen, but cannot believe that no one came forward earlier, surely to have had that awful experience happen to you and not tell someone sooner ! and wait till he's dead when nothing can be done to him.

We watched the tv programme the other week here in oz and was shocked ! surely this should have been done years ago.

But I suppose as is coming out now, the paedophile ring he was in, probably goes into high and powerful places !

  10. I was a bit of a sickly kid in early life, so I had malt extract every day for years ! also remember little bottles of "real" orange juice concentrate I used to have. Oh and as mentioned the dreaded cod liver oil.

Mind I take super high strength Krill oil nowadays for my arthritis and swear by it !

  11. Bit OT, but one of my favourite meals is roast rib beef with yorkshire pudding.

But we do it me mums old fashioned way, just over half cook the piece of rib roast in the pan, turn up the heat for 10mins to high, and pour the yorkshire pudding mix around the meat, then cook for another 20-30 mins and it is just the best !

The pudding soaks all the meat juices and bakes them into it, the taste is unbelievable.

  12. Why are Pork Farms pies not as good as they were years ago.

My regular Christmas Large Pork Farms Pie is no longer purchased.

Beefsteak got them for me years ago.

But no more, they are tasteless. What is missing from the recipe apart from jelly?

Its probably the jelly / aspic or whatever that had the most taste.

Dont scream, but I still collect pork dripping from a leg roast, as I love the jelly, I dont eat the white fat though. In fact I did one last week and just finished the drippin ! ;lovely.

  13. When I worked as a Post Office Tech. we had offices on Little Tennis street, Daleside road. We were the first factory unit that opened down there.

When they built next door to us it was a Pork Farms factory.

I used to take orders from the guys and go round to the factory to order the pies, sausage rolls etc.

We got them fresh as and they were wonderful.

One day when i went round, the lady from the front office was in the production facility at the back, and being a regular now, was invited back to get my order.

All I can remember was pigs heads everywhere ! and guys going at them with knives removing all the meat from the heads !

Sort of took the egde of them a bit, but we still carried on buying them as they tasted were so good.

Having said that my gran used to boil a pigs head for hours in a big pan, smelled bloody awful, but the brawn she made was pretty tasty and good.

  14. Another memory as a kid was the small tower at the top of Anold Lane / Gedling Lane, on the right as you drive East.

When a train used to go through the tunnel , (assume it was a steam train) the smoke used to rise from the tower !

    Probably a vent shaft ?

As a young teenager we used to bet each other to walk from the Arnold side through to the Gedling side with no torch or anything ! rumour said the tunnel was haunted !

  15. Camomile flowers in hot water for gumboils.

Tincture of Arnica for bruises - still used today in some sports medicines and alternative therapy shops.

Kaolin and Morph used for gastro

Kaolin poltice as mentioned for boils - I had a massive carbuncle on my shin as a kid and this stuff shifted it!

Sugar and soap poltce for drawing out splinters

And one of my old grans favourites Lodnum (she called it) , think it was a liquid narcotic similar to the Morph in Kaolin and Morph. came in a "ribbed" brown bottle, about 250ml.

She used to give it out by the teaspoon in a little warm water, to settle your stomach !

We still have Germoline in our medicine box Lol! bought it from thee uk last year.

Whitfields ointment for fungal infections - still available even here in oz !

  16. Came to this thread via a link from a current thread.

May be of interest, my brother in laws best mate lives in a house he built on Woodthorpe drive, he has the old railway tunnel as part of his garden.

Was going to use it as a wine cellar/store but it was way too damp, he now uses it as a gardening store.

Cost him a fortune to enclose the front with some fancy timber work.

Think he also has problems with floods when heavy rain as the water comes in from the blocked (park side).

Another memory as a kid for me, my great aunt lived on the Wells road, backing onto the railway line.

Would be early mid 50's, when I used to walk their dog along there with my great uncle Harry.

They left mid 60's to go into the Abel Collins homes on Derby road Woolaton (as in another thread).

Prior to emigrating, my work depot was the old Thorneywood station (British Telecom) and I remember the blue brick arches in a previous photo very well, as we used to park our work vans near them in the early 80's.

All sold off though after privatization came in the late 80's.

  17. My dad smoked Senior Service, being an ex navy man, then moved on to Park Drive.

He died at 54 due to a smoking related illness.

My brother another Park Drive enthusiast, could not get out of bed without his first one of the day, then proceeded to cough his guts up for 10 mins ! ready for his next hit.

It got him too eventually just after his 65th birthday, never got up as the emphasemia (spelling) had got him in the night ! That was after an operation to remove a throat tumour the previous year ! he still could not give it away though.

Sorry but I'm not a smoking person.
