  1. My grandma lived on Corporation street just up from Robinhood chase, I used to catch a 31 bus from Mapperley to top of Hungerhill or Manning street and walk down to her house every Saturday morning.

We then used to walk down to St Ann's wells road and go first to the pork butcher for 1/2Ib of pork dripping ! then to the bakery for a crusty loaf then back to her house and murder it all !

All my mums family grew up in that area and earlier on SunHill which was behind the Sheppards Race service station and the police station at the corner of Ransom Road and St ann's well road.

I had another great aunt up in Thorneywood, which was up St Bartholomews road.

I also remember walking through the allotments on Hungerhill road.

I have traced most of my mums family for my family tree most lived around that area..

  2. My wife was looking for a recipe the other day, in her special folder with all her stuff for that sort of thing, and came across my mums old Bero flour cook book.

It is very old and falling apart now but still has some cooking jems from old in it.

Anyway this got me to thinking about the old Bero factory in Daybrook and also the laundry that used to be near there too.

Got a feeling there is a Travelodge on the site now ? but maybe wrong there.

Our family lived on Arnold side of Mapperley tops and we had a great view of that side of the city, all the way to Crich Stand on a clear day.

We could also see the Home Ales brewery sign and lots of other landmarks almost round to Dorket Head brickworks.

When I was a kid I used to play in the old mapperley brickworks at the top end of Woodthorpe drive.

We even used to catch fish in the disused ponds there.

And to get home we used to run through the tunnels under Woodthorpe drive and Breckhill road, then up the field to the back of mum and dads garden. Dodging the watchman though as he used to chase us if he saw us!

All built up area now with houses everywhere.

  3. Cannot believe this I only joined a couple of days ago and more nostalgia !

When I was a kid probably around 8 or 10, my great aunt used to look after me,during school holidays, as my mum had a few health issues, I used to play with Stu on Caunton Ave off Ransom road, where my great aunt lived, lots of kids were cruel to him, being hairless (as kids of that age can be) but we hit it off and had many happy times on the Ransom road rec. and the old army camp area, that used to be at the top of Ransom road on Right hand side.

I used to steal (borrow) my elder cousins air pistol, so maybe that was the attraction !

I think Stu's rise in bodybuilding and martial arts came about from the early years of childhood bullying, but I may be wrong.

Over the years I often bumped into Stu around town and we both had interests in martial arts, and club doorwork.

Last time I met Stu was on Westdale lane, he and his wife had just taken over the beeroff opposite Doug Fearns Hardware shop. Must've been in the early 80's.

Other memories from this thread, the "mini boys" in their lime green mini van, cruising long row on a Saturday night awaiting for the latest address of where a party might be happening.

Keith Symonds used to run the boat club or maybe the Brittania club (both on the trent embankment trent bridge) with "Smiley" Pete Hubbard, then they started the Beachcomber club in the lace market, my first club job, working in the cloakroom Ha Ha ! but free entry and other perks ! the all nighters were amazing, matching anything that Manchesters "Twisted Wheel" club could do.

Met many of the acts performing there, but cannot remember one now !

Never was into the dungeon club but knew heaps of people who went there ! especially the scooter boys (I had a Lambretta TV 175) then an SX200 !

Pete Hubbard eventually opened the Bierkeller with Carl and the Hidlebuggers ! Carl was lead singer with Carles Fables (I think from memory) a very popular pub band of an earlier time.

I worked the door of the Keller for a fair while with Karate Roy and Big Trev ! Pete and Trev were good friend of mine then.

Then Pete and Trev started a new club on St James street, but it never really took off.

Memories gosh where have they been.

  4. Hi

In my intro thread, Stu, I think asked me what if anything I thought had changed for the Good of Nottm, when I last visited a year ago., so hope I've got the right place here to reply ?

I loved the new trams especially around the market square area, and there was some sort of expo on the square for a few days with a few rides, food stalls and even an artificial beach ! Its great to see the square being used this way.

    Old fashioned pork scratchings Hmmm!

I had quite a few breakfasts at the "Bank" the food was excellent and very cheap (to us Aussies anyway)!

Loved walking around Debenams, brough back lots of old memories there.

Loved Wollaton park and the hall, again brought back many chilhood memories, especially having a coffee in the old stables yard on a glorious sunny afternoon.

Loved going to the old pubs along the Trent valley, especially Morton and visiting my old fishing haunts.

A steak for two and a pint at the Ferry Boat Stoke Bardolph.

Witherspoons and Bread & Bitter on Mapperley tops.

We both loved the supermarkets and the food choices you have there now, and the 24hour opening times.

Can't beat buying a Tesco rasberry cream trifle at 10-00pm at night cause we fancied it !

Spent a fair bit of time in Morrisons, ASDA and Tesco's especially at the big Home store in Netherfield, Costa's coffee's hmm!

Now some of the downsides, hated the crowds on the paved walkways from Vicky center down to Broadmarsh, wherever I walked I seemed to be bumping into people !

Did I say Broadmarsh ! well whats left of it!

    Lots of litter everywhere.

Hated the crazy traffic management systems around the square, and very limited parking (and having to pay for it!)

Your ridiculous cost of fuel !

Gosh I could go on but will leave it there, as I said before, I love Nottm really and possibly always will.

Even writing this gets me excited and looking forward to another visit.

  5. As I said I left good old Nottm 23 years ago, physically anyway, never really got the place out of my blood ! and don't think I ever will.

Miss the pork pies, real stilton cheese, a real pork sausage roll, yes I like my food Lol!

Love Australia too though and it has been very good to us, the kids have all done great here and are "true blue aussies".

Still have an eldest son in Sherwood Vale.

My wife's only been back once, for my mums funeral and doesn't miss it at all ! Me I'm planning another trip maybe next spring, just love the uk in spring with all the hedgrows bursting with growth.

I worked at Gedling colliery for 18 months when I first came out of my apprenticeship as an electrician, met my wife at Gedling miners welfare ! her dad was a miner there.

When I come over (was there last July) I love to visit all the old haunts. Mind there has been a lot of change since we left some not so good.

Could not believe all the pubs that have closed, Grey Goose Arnold lane, Belle vue- Woodborough road, and many more !

Carlton pub on Valley road has a housing estate in its car park !

Colemans, Maypole yard, Boat Club, Beachcomber nightclub, Bierkeller opposite midland station, wow talk about nostalgia !

Sounds like I'm a boozer but not really just the old nightspots we all used to go,

Still got a brother in law in Burton Pastures so usually stay there.

    Thanks all for the welcome.
