  1. Probably maybe only the ex sparkies here, but does anyone remember LBJ, they were on Wilford crescent east in the late 60's, but eventually moved to Cliff road in town.

I was trying to remember the names of the owners, there was a couple of fellows and a young bloke, all family connected I think, the middle fellow was a well known motorcycle sidecar racer, think his first name was Jim, he had pictures of himself racing on the walls.

The younger bloke I think was Ken and usually served and was a bit weird at times, this was before computers took over so all account holders had a small book under the counter where goods bought was written down then a monthly account sent out.

I worked as a PO engineer at the time and we had a big book as we bought heaps of gear there before the PO hierarchy decided to hold our own stock and stores in the Nottm PO. Engineers new depot at Little Tennis Street Colwick.

This was just after the PO split from the GPO telephones and became separate entities.

  2. We are currently discovering again what real bacon should taste like, a local small butchery here in Ceduna SA make all their own hams and dry cured bacon, non of that water filled/cured rubbish, it is then twice smoked in redgum hardwood, simply the best bacon we have tasted in many years.

The ham off the bone is pretty awesome too.

Back to Nottm, Mick Robinson in Netherfield and Bondy on Carlton hill were both up there and pretty good, last one I remember from a couple of years ago was in Newark, may have been Porters but unsure now.

Dewhurts used to be good but I think they got a bit pricey in the end.

  3. First pantomime I ever saw was at the empire, my great aunt took me for my Christmas treat, remember walking up the steps to the gods, then being scared as the seats seemed so high up, soon forgot that though when the show started.

Can't remember what the panto was though but probably some person aunt Emily liked. Would be the mid to late 50's.

  4. If it's like here in Oz, they don't want your letters anymore, it costs too much for them to handle , they love parcels as they are far more lucrative.

I recently was going to order an item from the uk, it was a good price and a quarter of the Australian cost, 100 pounds plus freight, they calculated the freight at 90 pounds ! you can imagine what I told them.

Anyway got the same thing direct from China via Ali-Express, same price including DHL courier in 7 days !

Back to the thread, we stopped sending cards at xmas years ago, wife still sends the grandkids birthday cards though as they love to get stuff from "traveling nan and grandad" often money enclosed too as we never know what to buy them.

  5. Got a photo somewhere showing my mum and dad, her older brother and another lady friend on Raleigh tandem cycles, they were at Skeggy and had ridden there for a weekend break.

Just watched the film and cannot believe the amount of labour involved in making a bike in those days, and the quality that was obviously there in the finished product.

  6. Couldn't believe it recently when our lad told me he had just installed a wood burner in his new house in Arnold, I thought with the clean air act and all that they would never return.

He also is building a "fire pit" in his garden ! god forbid, wouldn't want to be his neighbours when that gets fired up.

  7. I was born at home in Lenton Abbey estate near Derby road.

I grew up in Mapperley and went to Hazel Grove junior then Gedling schools.

Lived in Mapperley till I got married then moved to a rental house in Hyson Green (Gladstone street) then we bought our first home in Carlton on Perlethorpe ave just off Westdale, few years there then bought our 2nd house in the nurseries estate further up westdale lane where we lived for 17 odd years till our migration to Oz.

  8. Not April fools but, my brother was always the real practical joker, remember him going in his local The Belle Vue on Mapperley tops one night, and super glueing his mates pint pot to the bar top while the unfortunate bloke had gone to the toilet.

It backfired though, because at first the guy tried to lift it, but then banged it hard and ripped the formica off the bar ! John the landlord made him pay to have the bar recovered.

  9. For closeness to the city and available shopping (quick drive along the loop road) I think my BIL has it sorted, he lives at Burton Pastures opposite the Carlton le willows school, but right at the rear away from the main road and school noise.

Super quiet and peaceful spot, in his upper rear bedroom where I stay on my returns and I can look out the window over towards Stoke. Can be a bit smelly at times though. And strangely enough the rail line never bothers me at all after the first night I usually sleep pretty good.

Four years ago we nearly bought a small bungalow that backed onto the train line there, but again the thought of winters swayed us as we would probably be back in Oz for those, so would hate to leave a house unoccupied during the worst cold months.

My BIL offered to caretake, but he would probably let it out to some gypo's without us knowing :-))

Problem would be getting my wife back there, as she loves Oz but not so much the uk. now, she's only been back twice in 27 years !

  10. Remember in 63 when I started my apprenticeship, I had a agreed with mum to pay my board of the princely sum of 2 quid a week.

Worked like a slave first week doing some sort of refurb at Home Brewery in Arnold, free beer at lunch for the boys but us apprentices got none being only 15 & 16 year olds. They ran us ragged fetch this fetch that !

50 odd hours at one shilling and tuppence an hour ! I came out with about 2 pounds 10 shillings, I threw the pay packet at mum in disgust and went to my room to sulk, she felt sorry for me and gave it all back but only the first week, then I handed the lot over from then and got spending money. Think sometimes though I got back more than I earnt.

A few months later we got a raise, one shilling and fourpence an hour !

    Kids today don't know they're born :-))

  11. Grew up in Carlton /Mapperley so like Carni and Sue, Grey Goose for good entertainment girls and live music, Carlton Pub, same, good music too and the landlords daughter Sally.

Cavendish pub sometimes, in town we always hit Yates before the clubs, but cannot say it was a favorite. Flying Horse maybe.

Happy memories of me dad in the Five ways on the ring road, he played in the darts team there Wednesday nights.

Never really did the city pub scene and never been a big drinker really, two pints I'm anybody's. Two glasses of vino now is my limit.

  12. I used to order lots of stuff from the British Provedore, delivery cost was ok but now it has become so expensive it's not worth it.

As an example I love John Wests dressed crab, small round tins in a cardboard little box. They retail in Tesco or Morrison for around 99p a tin, to ship a carton of 10 or 12 tins here was going to cost $79au ! (about 40 quid) They will only send large orders by sea which is cheaper obviously.

As a slight aside here, I killed my wife's Casio watch trying to fit a new battery (don't ask, big old fingers small watch) anyway we went shopping here for a new one.

Found one she liked, Eco drive, nice two tone stainless with bracelet and essential for her rapidly diminishing eyesight, fairly large numerals.

Anyway priced here at $350 Ouch, so I decided to look online, First Class Watches in Kenilworth UK 90 quid plus 9 quid delivery ! so all up around $200au, the best bit I ordered last Wednesday afternoon and it arrived here in Oz yesterday morning ! DHL express 4 day delivery worlwide in 3 business days ! with full tracking all the way.

Back to food items, I used to bring in Nestle Shredded wheat and Instant porridge (yes I know but I like it), now not allowed in here for some strange reason.

We do get Bachelors mushy peas though, just need some chip shop style curry sauce now.

  13. I don't do jokes or supposed funnies normally, but this brought a smile to me today, posted by my son who still lives in Nottm, on his FB page.

    "EARTHQUAKE IN MANSFIELD

An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale hit Mansfield in the early hours, its epicentre was in Shirebrook. Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering "Fuuuckinell".

The tremor decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and the Costa del Sol were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived.

Mansfield 103.7FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Mansfield. One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said, "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes come running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Victoria-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was skinning up and watching Jeremy Kyle the next morning."

Apparently looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal. The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help the stricken locals.

Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and Bone China from Poundland.

    HOW CAN YOU HELP?

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster.

Clothing is most sought after - items most needed include:

    Nike or Burberry baseball caps

Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers)

    Shell suits (female)

    White sport socks

Rockport boots and any other items usually sold in Primark.

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.

    Required foodstuffs include:

Microwave meals, Tins of baked beans, Ice cream, Cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew.

22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms.

£2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9.

£5 buys B&H and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.

    ***Breaking news***

Rescue workers found a girl in the rubble smothered in raspberry alco-pop.

'Where are you bleeding from?' they asked, "Ravensdale" said the girl, "wossit gotta do wiv you?"

  14. #63

Was actually at the Portland buildings Notts uni with a mate when Paul McCartney and wings showed up, my mate and I had assignations of being roadies, and had helped set up the advertised band (can't remember their bloody name , maybe Sons of Adam ?, but Paddy Flynn or Roger Lymn played lead guitar) when suddenly a big rumor started spreading that McCartney and his new band was here to do an impromptu performance.

We watched the whole set in awe that no one knew they were performing. Linda left a little to be desired at that time on vocals. But a great show all the same.

When we told people later they didn't believe us !

  15. As most here know my wife and I currently travel full time down here in Oz, we are termed "Grey Nomads".

I am a member of several bulletin boards with similar minded people, we have one private board with just a 100 members, and if possible catch up to meet with other members if in their area.

We have been invited many times to stay on properties of some members we have we know through the web but have never actually met !

Currently staying on a 12 acre property now in NSW by private invite, we had never actually met till last Wednesday but conversed often for maybe 2-3 years !

The faces were not at all what we expected, but strangely enough we get on really well, we have done this maybe 8-10 times now and never been disappointed.

Very similar to when I came to a Nottstalgia meetup a couple of years ago.
