  1. I can vaguely remember Mr Leigh. Do you remember the big central heating pipes in the classrooms, they were lovely in the winter -really warm. I'm trying to find some more photos of Blue Bell Hill and Alfred Street South to post on this site - watch this space !!

  2. Hi Benjamin

Sorry I don't recall them either. Probably because Thoneywood wasn't an area we used to visit. We stayed mainly around Alfred St., St Anns Well Road and the parks on Robin Hood Street. I sometimes ventured around the bottom end of Sneinton and Carlton Road - especially on my way to watch my beloved Notts County !!

  3. Hi Merthyr Imp.  Miss Barker is in the middle photo and Miss Pope is in the bottom one. Mr Lowe was the headmaster and other teachers I remember were Mr Gibby, Miss Harvey, Miss Prossor and Mr Davies. There was also a blind piano teacher called Mr Saunders. I also remember we had a film club once a month which I think cost 2/6d. It was held in the new school hall in the playground which I believe is still there.

DaveK - the off-licence on the corner of Crown Street was Marshall's shop. Karen Marshall is 5th from the left on the front row in that photo.

My mother's shop was next door - why didn't you get your sweets from us???  But we left there in about June 1961, so perhaps you're remembering from after that time. I think the people who took over our shop turned it into a café of some sort, but it wasn't successful.

Thanks for the info. I would only be 7 years old in 1961 so probably wouldn't have had pocket money then.

I've been trying to upload some school photos to this site but it wont let me as they have to be 50kb and my photos are about 100kb each. It's a shame because I'm sure a lot of people on here would recognize themselves. I'll try to reduce them in some way to get them uploaded.

Hello Merthyr Imp. Thanks for your reply. I am 62 years old now and attended Blue Bell Hill school from 1959 - 1965. Don't really recognize anyone in the photo as, like you say, they were a bit older than me. I do remember the smell of bread from Griggs shop though. I also remember the shop on the corner of Dennett Street ( or was it Wright Street ?) and the off licence on the corner of Crown Street were we sometimes bought sweets on the rare occasions we had some money !

DaveK #142, I had a crush on Jennifer Agar, My mother was the Manageress of the Lady Bay Cleaners when it moved from Blue Bell Hill to Alfred Street, opposte the Agars green grocers. Mr Agar worked at Wollaton Colliery as a shift electrician back then.

Next time I bumped into him, he was at Cotgrave where he was pit bottom electrician.

Hi,Ayupmeducks. I remember Jennifer Agar. Got in touch with her on Friends Reunited a couple of years ago.I also remember the Lady Bay Cleaners but unfortunately not your mum. It's interesting you mention Mr Agar worked at Wollaton Colliery because I now live in Wollaton not far from where the colliery used to stand. I remember too going to the post office on bonfire night for fireworks. Also remember Mrs Pitts shop and Perrins the chemist across the road.

    Welcom DaveK

did you ever go in the Blue Bell in the 50/60s?

Hi Mary, I lived opposite the Blue Bell Inn, next door to the Co-Op. I never went in as I was only a child at the time. Remember a lot about it though, like the Easter Bonnet Parades and some of the scuffles on a Saturday night as we watched from our bedroom window when we should have been asleep !!

I was brought up in St Anns in the 60s. I lived on Alfred st South, my dad had a shop there W Hodson selling furniture & televisions. Opposite was margarets wool shop, mrs Pitts bread shop & Perrins chemist as well as the old Post Office.

I lived across the road at no.82, next door to the co -op on the corner of Blue Bell Hill Road. I well remember your dad's shop and the others you mention

  10. josie jane and myself are still living in nottm,l moved back here 8 years ago after retiring from the police,it was great reading about the estate, some of the things l remember ....the 4 shops on ainsley road kirkes the butchers, the chippy, then the spar and the fruit and veg shop, playing hide and seek behind the shops, hedge hopping, ghost tapping, seeing who could walk all the way around the coop wall with falling off, walking to players sports ground and climbing between the bars so we didint have to walk all the round,l remember setting fire to the grass bank by the side of western blvd by accident, kevin paul roland and elaine scales john dudley he had a sister but l cant remember her name, steven beeching playing football between the shops in the garage area between ainsley rd and vcs

John Dudleys sister is Linda - she is now my wife (been married 40 years)

  11. This probably belongs on here. I was looking through some old photos today and came across this one, taken from the bedroom window over our shop on Blue Bell Hill Road. Not a very inspiring view! Date would have most likely been early 1961.

If that is Griggs shop ( and I think it is from memory) I used to pass it every day on the way to Bluebell Hill school every day from 1959 - 1965. I remember that on occasion we would go in there for a cake as a special treat. It didn't happen very often, though, as money was pretty tight in those days !

  12. I lived on Alfred Street South from 1955 - 1970. Next door to the co-op opposite the Blue Bell Inn. I well remember the wool shop, Mrs Pitts and Perrons Chemist - also Agers fruit and veg shop. Where exactly was W Hodson furniture shop ?

  13. I was brought up in St Anns from when I was too young to remember about 1960 when we moved to the Meadows.

Lived at Kings Lynn Terrace off of Turner Street, and then Alfred Street South, where Mum was the Manager of the Lady Bay Cleaners Shop.

We lived opposite Agar's fruit and veggie shop near the corner of Blue Bell Hill Road and Robin Hood St.

My Aunt lived off Union Road for years before moving to Clifton in the mid 50's. Both my Grans lived in St Anns.

The only violence I ever remember were the race riots on St Anns Well Road in the 50's, Riots??? More like a slaughter, the Teddy boys beat the living daylights out of West Indians....

I lived on Alfred Street South from 1955 - 1970 also opposite Agar's fruit and veg shop. We were next door to the co-op on the opposite corner. I also remember Lady Bay cleaners and the post office a few doors down that was originally a pub. There was also Hobsons timber yard and a butchers shop - I think his name was Ron. Also opposite was the Blue Bell Inn
