Hi I was born in 1951 at 15 Graylands Road. My name was Carolyn Richards and I had an older sister, Lynda and a brother, Christopher. My dad Roy worked on Players Fire Brigade and mum, Sylvia, worked in Edmonds beer off on Graylands Road.

I went to Glenbrook Infants and Junior Girls and then to Glaisdale bilateral. I moved when I got married in 1973 but my parents were there until dad died in 2014 (mum died in 1998). Having read lots of posts I have recognised many of the names and can add plenty more. (We lived just around the corner from Sandra Eggleton!!!!) There was Karen and Barbara Kiloran, Glenis, Donald and Candy Scrimshaw, Neil and Pamela Oakden, Graham, Clive and Ann Smith and Mary Wakefield all in our block of houses between Monckton Drive and Staverton Road. My best friend was Julie Moss (her sister was Karen Moss who still lives in the same house on Bramerton Road).

My dad had a Panther motor bike and sidecar before having a car..

Well I will finish there. Hope some of you remember our family.

I knew Neil Oakden, he was in my year at Bilborough Grammar, and in my very early teens I snogged Glenis Scrimshaw a couple of times!

We seem to be attracting a number of former residents of Fairnley Road onto Nottstalgia.

Fairmiss, are you connected in any way to Fairlad, other than by birth-road ?

    She's my "little" sister!

I too welcome you Fairlad. I'm sure you'll find lots of interest here. Are you still in the Army?

No longer in the army, they have no use for decrepit old codgers like me, served from '66 to '76. Best ten years of my life , got to live in Germany for 4 years and Hong Kong for 3.

  4. I can remember Peake watching us through the door window But I can't remember who put the note in the register.

Had an English teacher, whose name escapes me, set us a short story to write for homework and when it was marked and handed back I had to ask him what "pornographic" meant (yes I was that innocent!) much to the amusement of the class. I got 8/10 for the story but he added the comment "almost pornographic". The plot involved my friend Keith Humphreys and a girl named Sue Brown but I did swap the surnames around...

  5. Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here who forgot to introduce himself. I have already posted a few messages on specific subjects but not here,,,

I am Nottingham born and bred, born in Lenton Abbey, moved to Wollaton as an infant then to Bilborough in the 50's. We lived on Fairnley road (top end of Wigman Road). My first school was Melbury Infants, then on to Glenbrook Junior Boys and finally Bilborough Grammar school. Most of my early and teenage years were spent around Bilborough and Strelley estates. 1966 I left it all behind and joined the Army.

There you are - now you know.

  6. I originally posted this message on a St Martins Church page but was advised by Cliff Ton that the posts were from 2009! (I will get the hang of checking first I'm sure). I have re-posted it here as it is still relevant to my growing up in Bilborough during my teenage years in the 60's.

I used to go the St Martins every Sunday. I was also an alter boy! The main reason for attending church was so that I could go to the youth club held in the church hall , (now communal garages and houses), on a Saturday night. We also had some great dances there. This was in the early to mid 60's.

Names I remember? Here goes, Lesley Taylor, Brenda Thompson, Mick Chambers (my best mate), Mick Wright, John Hooper, Keith Jewsbury, Janice Coats (Lollipop), Heather and Hazel Burton , Diane ?, Robert Bridges, Richard Savage, Doreen ? (lived on Wotton Close, opposite Caincross Road playing fields), Jane Marson (my cousin), Mick Wilkinson (St Martins vicar's son), Toni Bakewell.

I also remember Father Lavender, Brother Michael, Father Shewring and Father Wilkinson from the church.

One day Mick Wilkinson got the keys to the church and we explored the bell tower and enjoyed the views from the roof.

The houses that fill the land between Wigman Road and Strelley Road was originally waste ground belonging to the church (gleeb land), a raised bank with trees and shrubs ran from St Martins Walk to Strelley Road and in that corner was a fresh water spring and a large pond. An occasional fair was also held on there.

  7. Good camera to learn the basics on. Not like the "press the button and let the computer take over" cameras of today. Not that I'm against them because I have one and have many in the past. Even now the enthusiasts say that to learn photography as a hobby you have to put everything on manual.

  8. Mum had an order book that was handed in to the Bracebridge Drive CO-OP on a Thursday and the groceries were delivered on the Friday. I remember Mum giving the Delivery boy 6d each time.

I also remember the red milk floats, i used to help the milkman out sometimes, I would only have been around 10,  and remember one day going up into Strelley village and he let me have a drive!

Mum preferred the Landers Bakery bread, he used to deliver every day too on Fairnley Road.

  9. Just read this thread from the beginning and like many others I started with a Zenith E (bought in Andover when I first joined the Army). I then progressed to a Prinzflex TTL, purchased in Dixons. I was later posted to Hong Kong and purchased a Canon FTb (as stated - built like a tank) which I still have together with a collection of lenses, it occasionally gets an outing.

My other cameras, used occasionally are a Yashica Elecro 35 GTN, Olympus XA, Canon IID2 (range finder model from 1955), Mamiya 645 and my go to camera for everyday use a Sony RX10iv. At my age it's easier to carry one camera than a body and a bag full of lenses!

I have lost count of the cameras I have owned and traded in for the latest model, mainly Canon or Olympus SLRs.
