Hi
We got the card and the phone call, told them not to bother. We also had the Kirby people round a few years ago it was a nightmare trying to get him out the door.

Hi Baldrick
Been on holiday so catching up with the posts. I can remember you and your mates, what about the time you were on Rum and Blacks, Malc could hardly stand up and you wanted some rope to tie him on the back of your bike!!! I ended up taking him home in my car, had to stop a few times on the way, when we got to his house you opened the passenger door and he fell out, I made a hasty retreat when his dad came out the front door.
I was talking to John Beaumont (ex landlord) a few weeks ago and he thought one of the Real Ale Breweries had bought it, now that sounds like a good idea!!!

Hi John
Think you mean The Canton Chinese restaurant, used it a lot in the 60's. Mrs Chung the owner used to sit in the corner and count the takings at the end of the night. Also think its been mentioned before on a another thread.

Hi John and welcome to a great forum
Katyjay lived on Amesbury Circus so you will probably hear from her. I moved to The Cocked Hat on Broxtowe Lane in 1957 and had a few friends on Amesbury namely the Joynes and Marshall's, also knew Tony Cussons still in touch with him,Tony Foster ( sadly died this year)and Alan Watson were all mates of my husband. What years were you at Crane School?

Hi
Can you remember how close to the Cocked Hat. There was a family called Colemans lived up the close, Did know Mick and David Alcock? they were twins. Do you know what year it would be. I lived there from 1957 till I got married in 1968.

Hi Sussexred
Managed to find a couple of photos, one shows the Rose Grower this year, the other with my mum & dad just before they retired with my 2 sons ( Ian & Craig) in 1978. I am very surprised my dad served underage drinkers as he was a stickler about that. You must have been very well behaved!
The pub opened in December 1971, when my dad moved in from the Cocked Hat ( both his old pubs now gone!!) I worked at the Rose Grower from '72 till early 1980.
It was never the same after they left and I moved down the road to the Priory.

Hi Bip and Denshaw
Think the pub you are talking about is called The Nurseryman on the A52 and corner of Wollaton Road .

Hi Craig
We also drove past the Rose Grower took a couple of photos for old times sake. We still have my dads name board from over the front door. It used to be busy in the 70's but not so in recent years. Looks like it will housing like they have on the old L & M site.

Hi
Worked at Boots on Station St from 1962 so remember Drury Hill well. On Carrington St there was a shoe shop Managers name ? Hall, a fabric shop, a butchers all green tiles, and the electrical shop. Can anyone remember the tool shop could have been called Harrisons? and the Parkside Club ( after Goerge Akins moved the gaming machines to the Victoria Club) on Station St.

Hi Bip
My e-mail went ok, perhaps you are right and he has closed it down, next it will be off U-tube. We haven't got much open land round here, Beeston, Chilwell, Toton and Long Eaton have all merged into one.

I too like the old colour blue better and agree it should be back in the square. Nottscops site is good, saw a few names I remember from the 60's (Stuart Argyle and Jimmy Mckinley)

:o Would that be in the early 70s or even late 60s.. The wife and i use to go and have a drink in the County Hotel next to the Theatre Royal on a Saturday night before going for a Chinese meal at the HONG KONG on Wollaton Street. I think before it was vandelised by the council of the time was it a Night Club for a spell, :D It's a nice office block come car park now
Does any one know the name of the night club because i don't.
Been away so just catching up. I believe the chinese on Wollaton Street was called the Canton, the Hong Kong was on Arkright Street just passed the Midland Station.

For much of my time in the area the pubs were "tied houses." The city centre pubs were dominated by Home and Shipstones where as Hardys & Hanson's pubs tended to be in the surrounding suburbs.I understand that both Home(Daybrook) and Shipstones(Basford) are now closed whilst Hardy's & Hanson's(Kimberley) still exists. However, can you still buy a pint of Home or Shippos in the area and,if so,who's making it ? By the way,do you know the funny anagram of Shipstones ? Not sure if I'm allowed to put it on here though ?
Changing the subject to transport. My days were just before de-regularization.The main buses were City of Nottingham,Barton,South Notts, and Trent.Do you still any of those or have they been replaced by other companies ? Thanks for any contributions to this post.
Hi Russ
Hardy's & Hanson's is no more, bought out by Greene King

Yes you are quite right Cocked Hat side of Broxtowe Lane also went to Players, we moved there in 1957 but somebody told my mum Crane was a better school so on the first day of school she took me to down to Crane and that's were I stayed until 1962. Anybody know the Daft ( surname) family that lived on Bideford Road?

Here's another, but not if there are any more words to this one
Once a upon a time
When the birds jobbed lime
And the monkeys chewed tobacco
The little piggies ran
With their fingers up the bum
To see what was the matter

Little Billy Bates was a naughty boy
A naughty boy was he
One day when he was walking
down a busy thoroughfare
He shouted It's coming It's coming
All the people started running
Asking Billy what was coming
When he told them Christmas
They clasped him like a drum
Threw him in the river
It made him shiver
He said by gum It's come

Hi Young un
My mum and dad were licences for Hardy and Hansons from 1952 in Leicester then moved to Nottingham in 1957 and retired in 1978 so if Ican help just let me know. Mum is still going strong at 95. Would be interested to know if you have any pictures of their first pub called The Griffin Inn on Belgrave Gate in Leicester.
