  1. LOL.

'Sniffing Glue' would have been slightly before my time really. I saw a book that was brought out about a year ago which was a compilation of 'Sniffing Glue' issues. Looked interesting....and DJ Danny Baker used to write for it before he went to the NME.

  2. Thanks for the info Stu. Glad to see there are some fanzines still out there.

The various Nottingham based football ones were The Brian, The Tricky Tree, Forest Forever (all Forest) and Pie In The Sky and Flickin' and Kickin' (both Notts) - I'm sure there were more though.

The ones I were thinking of were not football related....they were more freeform in nature....more "zine" than "fanzine".

  3. Hi everyone,

Does anyone remember a couple of 'fanzine' type publications that were sold in Nottingham around about the late 80's / early 90's. They were sold in places like Selectadisc and Forbidden Planet etc.

They were homemade affairs containing poetry, cartoons, music reviews and political stuff. One was called 'The Lobster Telephone' which I used to buy regularly and still have copies of in the attic somewhere. But there were others that were more comic strip based and they were A4 size. One which I occasionally bought used to have a comic strip in it called 'Skate Bunnies From Radford' and I can't remember what it was called. The cover logo was in a kind of a hip hop graffiti 'tag' style. Ring any bells with anyone?

  4. Maybe I dreamt this but I seem to recall that Donny Osmond (or perhaps another of the Osmonds) did an instore appearance at the Oasis Records store on the High Street in Long Eaton. I believe it would have been in the period 1987 - 1992. My wife doesn't believe me and said "Why would he go to Long Eaton?" which is a valid question I suppose, but it's made me doubt my memory.

So, did I make this up or does anyone else remember it? Did anyone out there get the great man's autograph?

    cheers

    Richard

  5. Yeah they do still manufacture marine flares and other pyrotechnic devices there. It's called PW Defence now. I worked as a Chemist in the lab there for a couple of years before I moved to the US in 2002. They have a big field at the back where they test some of the products. I've spent many a happy hour in that field letting off flares and signal smokes etc.

The great thing about working there was that the river would flood at least once a year and make access to the site impossible. We'd get a few extra days of paid holiday while waiting for the water to receed! :)

  6. Great day!

Nice photos...wish I could have been there.

I was listening in via Forest World in the States and it was a really dramatic 90 mins. Nailbiting. I can only imagine how tense it would have been in the City Ground.

  7. No takers?.....Ok.............Its dragging on a bit, so, reveal all time methinks...........

Cooking with gas.......... Cook becomes Cooke...........add Sam to that.....take one of his songs.............The Detroit connection then.............The Detroit Spinners also covered a song of Mr Cookes, as did our "hidden" singer.......That song was Cupid

Anyone thats got soul.. another clue to point you towards........................."You got soul " That was another song by him................and the singer is........................................................Johnny Nash, who had recorded a "Northern" track , and touched on country before he "Reggaefied" his produce.

Reminds me a bit of the clues on "3-2-1"....and we all ended up with Dusty Bin!

  8. They also remade Juke Box Jury in the late 80's. It was hosted by Jools Holland.

They had a "mystery guest" on each show who would be revealed after their song and video had been critiqued. On one occasion a Glenn Medeiros song/video got cruely and mercilessly (and deservedly!) panned by the whole panel (which included Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer) and then the poor lad was wheeled out from behind the scenes to face the jury. It was a cringeworthy situation all round :)

  9. I left Long Eaton in 2002, aged 29. Before that I had lived there with my parents my whole life - so I think they were glad to get rid of me!

I met my (now) wife at a concert in Toronto in 1999. She is from Rochester, NY and was in Canada for the day. I was on vacation visiting my grandparents who emigrated to Canada in the 60's.

Anyway, we stayed in touch as friends via email for a while and then she arranged to spend a semester studying at Nottingham Uni as part of a student exchange program. She arrived in Nottingham in Jan 2000 and during that time we first started "dating" and when she left to go back to the USA in June 2000 we decided that we would keep the relationship going. So there was about 18 months of a long distance relationship while she finished her course back in the USA. I visitied her a few times and started my immigration application for the States

Anyway we were engaged in August 2001 (on one of my visits to the USA). I moved over permanently in April 2002 and we were married in May 2002.

Been living in Rochester, NY for almost 6 years now and there are good and bad points like most places. I like the fact that we can afford our own detached house - as the house prices here are relatively low compared to other places in the USA and a steal compared to houses in the UK. We live two blocks from Lake Ontario and are surrounded by some wonderful scenery.

On the other hand the job market up here is a bit stagnant and so I've been mainly working through agencies. I also miss the culture and not having a thriving "downtown" area. Downtown Rochester is dead after 5pm as most people go home from their jobs to the suburbs...so it feels a bit dead.

  10. Blimey!`Small world eh!

Dunno if you remember, but at that time I lived opposite the S and S, 132 to be exact, and it must have been shortly after i introduced Alex on stage at the Royal Concert Hall.

That's right. I was at that concert and remember that you had introduced him. I also have an interview you did with Alex on tape somewhere in my collection.

I lived at 82 Tamworth Road and worked at the S&S for many years, graduated from glass collector to barman eventually!

Saw you had mentioned Reg Enderby in one thread too and used to know him a little bit. He was a S&S regular and The Sounds Of The Blues Brothers used to play in there quite regularly. Then they got a bit too big and I don't think the club could afford to book them anymore. It was always packed when they played though.

  11. I saw Luther Vandross a couple of times in the late 80's early 90's - great voice.

In fact I just remembered that Craig tried to help me sell a spare ticket I had for a Luther Vandross concert at Birmingham NEC by announcing it for me on Radio Trent. This would have been 1990 I think. I used to work collecting glasses in the Soldiers & Sailors in Long Eaton and I had an "Alexander O Neal" t shirt on one night and you saw it and spoke to me. I was only about 16 and a real geeky lad. Anyway, we chatted a few times about music and I mentioned the spare ticket and you said you try and help me flog it. I had no takers and ended up taking my Mum with me...but thanks for trying!! I still have a recording somewhere of you making the announcement!

  12. Wyvern Avenue. Its the ballast hole dug out for stone for the railway and ledt to flood. I'm told the fishing is good there. I think the fishing rights are owned by Soldiers and Sailors Club.

The fishing rights certainly used to be owned by the Soldiers and Sailors and a licence to fish on the pond was much prized when I was at school (I never had one!).

I also remember various rumours of the "Barkers Pond Monster" and the huge overgrown fish that supposedly were in there.

Barker's Pond was also the location where I caught my first site of a "mucky book" that I stumbled upon among the trees when I was about 12 or 13 !faint!

  13. Yes Limey, it's the Sea Scouts place.

I had heard that the school had been demolished. Not been in Long Eaton since that happened. Will be interested to see it now if I can get over this year.

The hut was by the canal and you could access it by walking down "the dirt road" near the bridge which I think now (just looked at Google Earth) is called Clarence Road. Back when I went to scouts it was just a dirt road and led to some waste ground and then onto lower school and the field etc. I assume the Sea Scouts place is still there....it was when I was there in 2004.

Just realised my memory of street names is really bad for saying that I lived in Long Eaton for 25 years!

  14. Obscure reference to Auf Wiedersehen Pet here....

One of the huts from the first series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet ended up in Long Eaton. It was donated to the 15th Long Eaton Scouts by Central TV sometime in the mid 80's. I think it was one of a few huts they used during the filming of the series. As far as I know it's still there - you can see it from Tamworth Road when you walk over the canal bridge near Long Eaton Lower School field. It's a wooden hut, painted blue and is behind the main scout hut.

I remember Central News coming down to film the opening of the hut - and there is a plaque in the hut commemorating it.

I hope it's still there...we used to hire it out for family parties and stuff.

  15. Thanks katyjay and mick2me and hello to you too!

Upstate NY is lovely...but you're right we get a lot of snow in winter. The winters can be very long, lasting from Nov to April if it's a bad one, maybe longer. Takes a bit of getting used to!

mick2me - where abouts on Tamworth Road are you?
