  1. Thanks for all your replies. The picture answers my question. I thought though that it moved well after 1953 because it was there when I started my drinking in about 1955.

Just down from the Griffin and Spalding store was a lovely hotel I think called the Black Boy with pillars at the entrance. It all looked rather grand from the outside. As a working class kid I had no hope of seeing the inside. Knocked down or converted years ago. I wonder if anyone got any of the furnishings from the place.

  2. RadfordRed if you see this!

It's going to take a long time to go through all these photo's. My grandmother used to live in a street near the junction with Hartley Road and Foster Street. Now I believe knocked down as the houses were all built around the turn of 1900

Your picture of the gun shop and the pub took me back a long long way.

  3. Newbie David here.

Just wondering what has happened to all the cinema's. I know that most of them have long disappeared but I thought I would ask which ones are still around.

The ones I used to visit were Elite, Savoy, Gaumont, Windsor. Now my memory is losing it! The one in Market street, the News Theatre just down the road from the Co-op, the one on Milton street opposite Victoria station (because they showed some gauche type French films!), I think there were two nearly next door to each other in the square. One in Aspley and Basford. Oh and the flea pit called the Ikeston Road on guess which road!

Always used to look at the cinema listings in the Nottingham Evenig Post to see what was on. There must have been about 25 cinemas in those days. Last paid a flying visit to the City in 1990 odd or thereabouts.

It is going to take me some time to look through all the forums.

Long, long time ago. Memories eh! The good old days.

I still support Forest too, not like these other people who support whoever is winning even though they live in a different town.

  4. Morning everyone.

I have been looking for yonks for this sort of site for Nottingham. At last found you!

Born 19!! in Wollaton Park. Did a couple of jobs after leaving Cottesmore school and just before joining the army did a year at Victoria railway station.

Moved to France in 2006 to join son and his family. Language skills - zero!

Look forward to taking part in anything on the site and of course trying to meet up with old friends from all those years ago.

    Cheers
