  1. They need to update their website smokingkills "2 unique nightclubs and excellent smoking facilities"

The New York Disco used to be called the Bali Hi in my days down there

Yes Frank you are right about a website update." Excellent smoking facilities " definitely taboo.I also remember the Bali Hi.

  2. Is The Palais still there and open ? During my Nottingham days (1975-1986) I think I only ever went once on Saturday night - with a guy who I worked with and some mates. My working colleagues and his mates lived on Clifton Estate and they told me that if the bouncers asked where I lived not to say I lived there.I was living in Wollaton at the time so I didn't have to ! Mick, Beefy or Den I'm sure you will be able to enlighten me here.Thanks.

  3. I remember this pub during my Nottingham days (1975-1986).It was a Shipstones pub during the tied-house era. There was a guy on a honky-tonk piano giving the place a traditional pub entertainment theme.I think the couple who ran it were Derek and Mary.I was in there one Friday night and was talking to Spyke Golding of CAMRA fame.I was enjoying a pint of Shippos bitter.Spyke had a huge glass. Not sure how much it held.I suppose I should have asked him. I recall the pub closed down in the early 1980's and became a shop. However,it had fine, large rounded windows at either side of the entrance door. These windows had a protection order on them(or were listed,or whatever) so could not be tampered with. That was good. If ever I return to Nottingham I will ensure I wonder down Clumber Street and assume the premises are still recognisable as the old Crystal Palace pub.Happy nemories !

  4. I don't know if it's still there but he was a fantastic bloke (if he knew you) I used to go in every Friday and Saturday for my 'fix' of chicken kebab, with my mate "Steve the Greek" ( who was Turkish really , but he pretended to be Greek " 'Cos we Brits like them better " as he used to say) He was related to them in some way.

Anyway after a few visits with him, Eddie started to treat me as family too and I used to get massive portions.(Too much to eat in one go)

When I first went out to Ibiza we used to talk to the tourists about what we missed/ the first thing we would do when we got home, my reply was .

" Catch the 8.00pm bus from Carlton Square, go into Nottingham, meet my mates, have a bloody good bat round town, finish off up Arrabbelas , GET MY FIX OF CHICKEN KEBAB, take it home ,fall asleep with it on my lap in front of the telly, wake up and eat it for breakfast, go to bed for real this time, get up , go in the shower, get dressed, catch the 8.00pm bus from Carlton Square and do it all over again!!!!

    HAPPY DAYS

Great post,Beefy - thanks.I remember Eddies real name was Erdinc Tamay.I suppose Eddie was English for the Turkish name of Erdinc.I always used to pass his shop on the way to the Blue Bell which was the start of my Friday night pub crawl.Happy memories !

  5. Does anyone remember the 'Peach Tree' just a few yards up from the 'Turf Tavern'.

I was a resident in the Nottingham area from 1975 -1986 (See "Memories Of My Nottingham Days 1975-1986). I remember The Peach Tree.I always thought it was a bit rough.Wasn't it a Whitbread house ? Later on it was refurbished and became Langtrys. The Turf Tavern was part of my regular Friday night pub crawl in the early/mid-80's with a working colleague of mine.In those days it was a Shippos pub as it was during the "tied houses" era.Me and my mate used to meet in The Blue Bell a bit lower down.Next door or next door but one was a Turkish Kebab place owned by a guy called Eddie. Is it still there ?

  6. I met Amos from Emmerdale, in the oakleigh Lodge Social Club in Bulwell! He used to go in there quite often.

I saw Bruce Welch from the Shadows in the street about 4 years ago, just coming out of Langtrys. Of course I went up to him and made a prat of myself.

I vaguely recall meeting Bernie Winters when I was very small too. I think it was in the Pearsons store.

I nearly forgot, I met Dave Hill from Slade and Sam Brown in Bobby Browns Cafe.

When I was a kid my brother took me to see Cliff Richard and The Shadows at Liverpool Empire. We saw Bruce Welch over the road near St Georges Hall.My brother had got his autograph some time ago and so asked for his autograph so he could give it to me.He refused to sign and said he was "going for a cup of tea." What has that got to do with anything ! He would probably be made up if somebody asked for his autograph now.Never ever forgave him for that.

  7. I understand there was the "old" Miltons Head prior to the Vic Centre being completed in 1974 - a year before I started down there. However,I do remember the "new" Miltons Head.It was popular with the younger sect(of which I was one !) and a dreadful place. There were signs everyhere written in the landlords scrawl saying don't do this and don't do that ! Is the pub still there and if not what is the building now ?

When Home Brewery and Shipstones closed down did they just do that or were they taken over by another brewery ? (I am aware that Hardy's & Hansons were taken over by Greene King,by the way.)

I remember the Tap 'n' Tumbler in Wollaton Street.I guess it is still open but can anybody remember the pub's name before it changed it's name? Thanks.

  8. Sorry but the Classic was on Market Street ,the Climax was on Broad street I think (One of those that end anyway)

Russ to quote someone click on quote and then on Addreply that way you only use up one post!

I've cracked it Beefsteak ! I now know how to reply without taking up all that room ! Thanks for your conributions to my enquiries.I will try and think of some more nostalgic trivia.Cheers.

  9. For much of my time in the area the pubs were "tied houses." The city centre pubs were dominated by Home and Shipstones where as Hardys & Hanson's pubs tended to be in the surrounding suburbs.I understand that both Home(Daybrook) and Shipstones(Basford) are now closed whilst Hardy's & Hanson's(Kimberley) still exists. However, can you still buy a pint of Home or Shippos in the area and,if so,who's making it ? By the way,do you know the funny anagram of Shipstones ? Not sure if I'm allowed to put it on here though ?

Changing the subject to transport. My days were just before de-regularization.The main buses were City of Nottingham,Barton,South Notts, and Trent.Do you still any of those or have they been replaced by other companies ? Thanks for any contributions to this post.

  10. From my days in the Nottingham area,I remember a small, dive of a picture house called The Climax Cinema. It was somewhere off Lower Parliament Street.I never ever went there (honest!) but you don't have to use your imagination much to guess what kind of films they used to show in there.Presumably it was frequented by the dirty raincoat brigade !

  11. Thanks Beefsteak. After some researching I found the comments about Sally, the "posh" newspaper seller and pavement artist. They mention a bearded guy who used to knock around with her.I remember him too.Saw them together in a pub.Apparently,he used to mistreat her.Shame.I wonder what became of her ? She had a kind of "celebrity" status in so much as everybody knew her.I guess there must be some people around who know what happened to her but whether they will ever come on this site is another matter. If she still is around I hope she is OK.

  12. I'm relatively new on here and I mentioned the newspaper girl on a previous post.I didn't know her name was Sally.Thanks.I also remember the bearded guy.I once saw them in a pub together.I'm not sure whatever happened to Sally but, hopefully, she is still around, somewhere.
