  1. I was born at Peel Street during the war. Spent a couple of months in General with pneumonia problems in my 20s,14 died in the ward while I was there.....from there went to Cedars where after a fortnight the Doctor sent me home..."For a good nights sleep and a decent meal"...his words. ;)

And throughout this time the morning papers and tea trolley came round with cigarettes for sale...and each bed had an ashtray on the bedside table.

  2. Once again the name eludes me,but the canoe shop was on the corner of Norton Street for several years. I used to bump into the bloke when he was buying resins and glassfibre. The boat builders at Radford Mill were Wyche and Coppocks (memory clicked in)

A lake was doubtful around Lake Street as it was halfway up a hill...more likely a marshy pond at the most. My Great Grandfather used to be a warper at the lace factory on Peverill Street in the 1860s...he walked to work past the windmills on Forest Road from his house on Sherwood Street...it's one of the few old houses still remaining there.

Notice on Clff Tons map 1901 (#2) that Barnetts factory is yet to be built...the blank square where it appeared a couple of years later used to be a woodyard.

  3. I still have a (180 blank) tape bought from Eddys on Alfreton Road in the early days...still got the label on £7.50 I reckon thats about 20 odd quid in todays money...they certainly dropped a hell of a lot in later years. Typical rip off when something is new.

And Mick....I have a recorder that worked fine when last used if you can be bothered to come pick it up.

  4. I have dozens of them and still play them from time to time as I have kept the old Video Recorder.......I will never throw any of them away..........

Ditto....I have two TVs with integral tape players which means I always have something to watch whenever Virgins cable goes down for any reason.

  5. I used to see the cartoons in the 'funny papers' Dad used to bring home from his American servicemen friends.Another character was a guy called Wimpey who's favourite saying was "I shall gladly repay you next tuesday"...I'm pretty sure I've met him once or twice in real life.

Other cartoon characters I remember were Lil' Abner,Popeye and Dick Tracey.....the latter with a wrist watch that in those days would have been miraculous, but today 80 years on in a world of mobile phones wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

  6. Not all from the past were to my taste....Father Dear Father,Terry and June,On the Buses,Sorry,George and Mildred,

poorly written with much canned laughter.

I never rated the Two Ronnies either, mostly Skegness end of the pier stuff and not sitcoms I know...and yet Ronnie Barkers Porridge and Open all Hours absolutely hilarious.

I agree most British Sitcoms can't be beaten but the American Golden Girls and Cheers came a close second.

  7. What model printer is that, Pooh?

    Epson DX4450

When it got bunged up I bought a cleaning kit for a few quid a year ago...'Printhead Hospital'....works great if cleaning solution left overnight and I've printed a hell of a lot since since.

  8. Dave Gorman show last night showed that printers own ink was roughly 7 times the price of the best champagne for the equal quantity....I use a budget ink in mine and the colours are brilliant...it works out at around 50p a cartridge when I buy 20 odd. The printer occasionally refuses to recognise one...but at that price I don't care.

  9. Yeah....and ban shop window displays and women in short skirts and gear levers and music and advertising and have yearly driving tests and MOTs every month and ban driving in heavy rain and on ice and in the dark and if you have a headache or a cold or arthritis....

In fact it would reduce accident figures if cars were kept stationary....they could charge for parking then.

  10. Wish I’d tried this years ago…I’m quite good at taking cuttings but baby plants take so long to mature, particularly shrubs and trees.Air layering gives you the opportunity to have plants several feet high in just a couple of months. Not only that but the bigger plants cost a lot more at the garden centres.

Select a suitable branch on the bush…in this case a fuschia and a fatsia.Scrape and cut the bark off for a couple of inches.Apply some rooting compound gel and wrap around tightly with soaked spagnum moss securing with wire, string or cable ties and a split poly bag to keep the moss moist.Wrap around with kitchen foil and forget it for a couple of months.By then the ‘wound’ on the plant will have grown roots….cut off below leaving the moss in place and plant firmly in a pot…staking if necessary.Hey presto a decent sized bush for next year…much quicker than seeds or cuttings.

  11. Kenny Everetts favourite gag....and mine.

Guy with a broken watch sees a shop on Oxford Street with a window full of watches and clocks....

"Morning!....My watch has stopped working can you have a look at it please?

    "We don't do watch repairs!"

"Ah!...in that case have you something around £10 to tide me over while I have this one repaired?"

    "We don't sell watches!"

"Well what the hell do you do?"

    "We castrate cats!"

"Castrate cats???.....How come your window is full of watches and clocks?"

"What do you expect us to hang in the window??"

  12. Another of my wife's theories is that it was the Duke of Edinburgh who arranged for Diana's car crash.

Assassins throughout history have made sure their attempts at removing their target from the planet Earth came as close as possible to a 100% positive result.

I can't think of any that have arranged an accident with the remote possibility that their target MIGHT be killed.

If the car had been made to fly over a 1000 foot cliff the possibility of it being a serious assassination attempt might be believable.
