Remember how back in the 60s at Goose Fair time the pubs were allowed a half hour extension to the normal 10:30 last orders deadline.

I have very fond memories of The Grosvenor in the late 60s. The smell of the steaks from upstairs and Home Ales bitter

Goose fair in the Grosvenor......Now Bongo a well known P***head always hit the bar just before closing with an order for three pints of bitter....for himself of course!

On being informed after being served one night that the pub was open for an extra half hour 'cos of the fair...he downed all three one after the other and proceeded to order three more....That man could sup!

The Walnut Whips I remember had a walnut on top as well as inside. So disappointed a few weeks ago when I tried one from the local British sweet shop, No walnut inside?

The brazil nut in the purple foil in Q Street was replaced by a hazlenut 50 years ago.....they kept the brazil shape though...and failed to advertise the fact.

I remember first seeing him in Ivanhoe and then The Saint.

Despite all his film roles his lasting legacy should be his work for UNICEF

Those early series kept a lot of small time actors in work...remember Sam Kydd?...Peter Sallis was always the hotel clerk, and John le Mesurier the bank manager.

  4. In a local pub queueing at the bar a small bloke in front of me was being ignored...the landlord looked at me and said..."Yes sir"

I said..."I think this chap was before me"...his reply..."Look mate I'll do the serving, you do the drinking, alright!"

My reply in a loud voice..."You can stuff your drinks and your pub right up your ****never went in again.

  5. I remember after a heavy snowfall driving in the ruts from the previous vehicle as you do rather than take on the virgin snow either side. I remember standing in admiration of a bloke following the same tactic but unfortunately in a three wheeler....a bow wave from the front wheel that would put a destroyer to shame....Wonder if he made it home?

  6. In the old days places like Alfreton,Belper,Ripley and the like had a great choice of real grocers...Maypole,Meadow Dairy and Home and Colonial etc....

The coming of the supermarkets and the motor car sealed their fate.Housewives no longer had to struggle with heavy shopping bags three or four times a week...Progress?....sometimes I wonder.
