  2. thank you, if I did it again I would make a far better job, that was in general pre pc days, I did it all on a word processor, I also did later pc prototypes for the story of the suburban, the GNR Watnall to Colwick and "t'up north, railways around Eastwood Kimberley Hucknall etc still have them on computer discs (if I can find them)

  3. Anyone have any idea's on how the change over from the old one to the new one was made? For a start the new one looked a fair bit higher than the old one (but that may have been an illusion) secondly the new one was built alongside but there is no deviation in the tracks to permit the new one being used, given the closeness of the Perry Rd overbridge and the North to South Rathole line joining the UP would bar any large scale track realignment? or is that what they did? I certainly don't recall and sudden kink and from Perry Rd looking north the lines were straight as an arrow

  4. Near enough Denshaw, think the actual title was The Colditz Story, when the British first arrived there The Poles were already there, one had been in Nottingham and asked Pat Reid (played by John Mills) if he'd been in there, maybe a check to see if he was British? off topic but in the book the film was based on it said The Poles all seemed to be Master Locksmiths, using keys made from fire bucket handlles, the Germans knew this, and at one time asked them to open a door having lost the key to it, which they did.

  5. Re the silver teapot, I used to go in there quite a bit years before the murder, had a good few old pin ball machines where you had to get rows of numbers lit up the idea being you won free plays for 3 or four in line or 4 corners etc, can't recall exact rewards, but it was possible to get to high numbers of free goes, 64 or 128 which which the cafe would (illegally?) buy back off you, guess thinking was if you were on there for hours playing them off they weren't earning money? was told by staff there the body was locked in outside toilet and chemists next door to cafe reported the smell, I can well imagine that smell as once had to remove a dead cat from a heating cupboard on St Ann's estate, I had to "hook" said cat from such as stuck behind pipes, the cat "broke up" with flies and loads of maggots, didn't quite spew up but not far off!

It was also me who found the cash tray from The Yeoman Army stores robbery/murder, dumped just over the wall in the "rest garden" on Church St Old Basford just before the bridge over the railway

  6. Most unusual reg I saw was on a Rolls Royce at the cattle market, just one number, I think it was 8, had a look at the tax disc and that too said 8 so no joke or whatever, I always fancied a private no. plate but so expensive, it's far cheaper to change your name by deed poll, Ashley YV06CYA

  7. Have mentioned this before (years ago) and whilst not about Bulwell Forest Station as someone mentioned they were going to walk the route thereabouts they (and others) might like to know they can still walk or cycle the route of the GNR line from Mapperley tunnel to Cinderhil Rd without trespassing, obviously where road bridges have been filled in or removed or where houses or industrial units have been built on the route you will have to cheat a little, like crossing Mansfield Rd or Vernon Rd but there is always a road or footpath leading up to such gaps inc a bridge over the former MR route back of the former swimming baths at Catchem's Corner

  8. Been busy fitting bath shower screen, kitchen worktop new washing machine and cooker hood, that's it now, knackered, so time for a few memories, the cobbler in a shed was indeed on the corner of Zulu Rd and Pearon Street in the corner the the playground of "Dowson's Nursary" (at least I think it was dowsons, not sure of spelling of nursary since my poisoning either).

The red and white sports car as mentioned did belong to the barbers "Banhams" but not sure if the old man,s Les or his son who played for Nottingham Forest, It was a Austin Metropolitan which was well known model for tipping over on bends as they ha d a very narrow wheel base (distance of wheels aprt on same axle)

  9. Yes it was the older of the whitlams, funnily enough they (the family) ran a chip shop on berridge road and later the mum had it as a clothes/haberdashery shop, my wife then girfriend bought a pair of "Lucy Durose" Nylons there pre 1970 as we then moved away, I still have the packet, on it is a photo of a little girl sat on a victorian ladies knee, according to my auntie that little girl was her auntie! tried to track down history of such but no luck

And yes I do remember Ingrams shop, if I've got my facts right we lived 8 doors away on other side of Rosetta Rd across from Mrs Woods and later Mr Love's sweets and cigarette shop, left there in 1964, remember talking to Ingrams store new owner in later years, remember he had been good footballer (your husband?) with me nearly joining Notts County we talked alot, (only one thing stopped me playing for them, I simply wasn't good enough!) lol

  10. I remember alot of the names, places etc in new basford fom those days which can't be bad, esp as a few months ago couldn't remember what year it was, in hospital and care home for 5 weeks with hepitis e, jaundice and by liver failure caused by over perscription of anti biotics, at one point I was critical and it was "touch and go", anyway I made it, lost nearly 3 stone and had to pay £650 care home fee's (£3000 if I wasn't a skint oap) still having carers visit me 4 times a day, bit of a waste really as got permission to drive again last month and out in car or on tiger 90 alot but that's up to NHS

Back on topic I always thought Durnford st was 2nd on the right from Nottingham Rd on Zulu Rd? didn't get around where that shown Chip shop was because the Chambers and Butlers gang territory! but recall the gas board fitting the chip shop fryer, a guy named Billy or his brother Jimmy who lived on Berridge Rd was on the crew fitting it, excuse spelling errors etc, another symtome of my hospital trip!

ps, both Durnford and Chelmsford roads etc named after the officers in charge of the British Army slaughtered in the Zulu War before Rorkes Drift etc

  11. Whilst there are still signs of ww 2 damage remaining today in Nottingham we had a broken window in our house from the war till 1964 when we moved out. In the upstairs passage opposite the bathroom it was repaired regularly by my dad who taped cardboard over it!

This was no enemy action but caused by an ARP man with a stone from the empty house next door which they used as a base after seeing a light showing from it.

It is interesting to note whilst the rest of New Basford residents would be sheltering in their corrugated Anderson Shelters the team there had a solid concrete large shelter to protect them

  12. Just coming up to 4th anniversary since my wife (42 years married, another 5 living together before that,) died, then last sept managed to drop the 650 honda at about 5mp, trapped under it, finally lifted off me by car driver who stopped, no injuries apart from grazing of ankle, this refused to heal, (still have scab on it) given several courses of anti biotics, so many I overdosed on such and they attacked my liver, got jaundice which led to hepitise E, nearly died in hospital and care home 5 weeks, lost 3 stone, also memory, can't recall Christas or New Year, didn't know friends etc, (plus bill of over £600 when I got out) stll have 4 carers visit a day to my home, "banned" (medical) from driving till last thursday, when I finally remember the queen's nane plus year ww2 started and other obscure facts, (and via blood tests evidence liver had recovered (no booze since dec 2nd last year) sold the honda now have a 1962 Triumph Tiger 90 (like a moped compared to japan's revenge for the A bombs) oh and just turned 70!
