  4. Hello Catfan, yes Marshalls were the best job i ever had, Arther Rex Marshall started his busness with one lorry from Linby st, side of The Three Crowns pub in Bulwell, in 1925, had a contract with John Players, fetching tobacco from Liverpool docks.

It grew with sucess and had Depots in major Dock Citys up and down the country.

A bit of history in the makeing

  5. Hi every body, i,m now living in Swinton Manchester, but my heart is still in Nottingham, getting back to Bulwell, in the earley

1960,s i worked and Drove for a haulage company named A.R.Marshall and sons, situated on Hucknall Lane, were Morrisons

stands now. I lived up Sellerswood for 25 years, and have seen quite a lot of changes to Bulwell in the last 50+ years.

After shopping at the weekend, we used to sit and feed the Ducks down at the side of the Leen on Bulwell Bogs.

The first thing we would say as the Ducks gatherd round for a feed was Aup meducks, Memory,s they live forever, good old days.

Some times i wish i was back there, but time roll,s on..

  6. Hi Beefsteak, im more in memory of their bakery on Alfred st south, i lived on Alfred st ,just up from the Cromwell Pub,

in the late 1950.s and if the wind was in the right direction, the smell from that bakery was just heaven.

Iv.e tryed loads of different sausage rolls, but not one comes near Pork Farms Products. hummy hummy.

  7. Cliff ton, I'm only stating that Padderley were there before any of the superstores.

I do believe the auction building was more forward towards the road, than the main building is know.

when i said next door to the wolds hotel,i didn't mean they were holding hands, it was in the near location!!

we can all get it wrong some times.

  8. Anyone remember " Paddleys Motor Auctions" , on Loughborough rd,West Bridgford,

next to the Wolds Hotel, a very active place to buy a good cheap car pre 1964.

after that date, the auctions finished and the site was redeveloped into a super market named GEM.

it was an American company, but only lasted untill 1966,when it withdrew its operation in W,B

1966 the big boys stepped in and again re developed the site, to day it known as ASDA.

not a lot of people know that.

  9. Had some great snow ball raids, between T.B.S seniors, and Mundella pupils, in the years 1953/5 at dinner times,

as you now the two school were not far from each other,

When Winters were Winters, snow laid on the ground for days on end,

pity to see it gone, but like we say, memories are still with us, it was a class building on its own,

  10. another one springs to mind is MOONS GARAGE, on Shakespeare St, facing the central Fire Station,

They had one of the first drive through car wash,s in Nottingham,

The first time i used it , drive up to the line, put your money in the box, and press the button, sud spray started,

went to wind the window up , and the window regulator sheared, time to make a quick exit before getting drowned

came out there like a rocket, i can laugh now, but wasn't funny at the time,

    Dennis..

  11. ANY BODY re member RICK ST GARAGE, between Glasshouse st & Huntingdon st , it was a d.i.y garage,

They would charge you so much a hour to use their equipment, jacks, tools etc, also if needed, workshop manuals.

and if you got stuck with a job, there were fully trained staff to assist , extra of course.

It would be andy if you could work on modern cars , as easy as the old moters, .save you a fortune.

  12. My first job from leaving school was at E.D.Watson, on Waterway St, in March 1955.

I went there to start an apprenticeship in the electrical trade.

My first week was a week in hand, and my first weeks wage,s was £1.19.1.

I didn't stick that for long, the money was rubbish.

I then went to work at N.C.B Bestwood pit for a while, untill i went in to the Motor Trade.

    Happy Days Dennis..

  13. hi mick2me,

The car in question was a 4 door cambridge, all black, with side bonnets to the engine bay,

Me & my first bride, whent on honeymoon down to London in it, we got wed in Dec,1959, a cold winter,

we drove down with blankets around our legs, no luxury of heaters in them days.

12 month after, i purchaced another one, but a 1939,same model, with a very good body to it.the only trouble with was a

nacked engine, I then set to ,removed my first engine ,overhauld it, rebore, crank regrind, etc rebuild, and then fitted it

to the second car, made a good car out of two, I did all this at my Dads yard at Oakland Av, Sawley, any where near you

    Mick?

  14. Hi greenviking,

Looking back over the years, i belonged to the 94th group, our H.q was at The Meadow Boys Cub.

near Trent Bridge School, I'm going back to 1952/3. great time in my life, camping and all types of activities.

one camp springs to mind, when we went to Kingston-on soar, not to faraway, we all got in the back of this open

back Bedford truck, all singing our heart out, When we got there ,some one had left a rope attached to a branch

of a tree, which over hung the river, so you can see what we were doing most of the time, great summers then.

    a good time for youngsters.

    Dennis.

  15. I think i beat the lot of you, my first car was a 1937 Austin 10, In 1957 i worked at Beechdale Garage. on Beechdale Rd.

The owner was Les Swift,( a good boss), at the time i was going to work on a James 98cc motor bike,

One day Les said to me , if you can sell that bike , i will give you a car that's coming in part ex, for another one.

so what did i do ,i got my selling head on and got rid ,within two days, I then took delivery of my first car.

A great little motor,my pride and joy

I've had quite a lot of cars since then, to many to mention..
