  1. I used to walk down from school at the top of Waverley Street, through the Arboretum and into town to catch my bus home.      One day my friend and I stopped on the grassy hill where there was a chap sitting holding a small pet monkey in a harness - I went to stroke it and it gave me a nasty bite!:angry2:

Does anyone remember waiting outside griffiths and lyons tea house early saturday evenings to find out where any parties were happening ? after spending the afternoon in the khardomah and griffiths cafe

Yes I remember the Lyons Tea House by Griffin & Spalding.  It seemed huge inside.  My bus  home from school (No 57) used to stop just outside.

But after what you said here I've just looked, and I see that you first registered here in 2010 !!   So you're saying you gave up trying 12 years ago, and now you've come back for another go !!

    Stick with it.

Wow, some of them used to be bad, many a time busses stopped running and had to walk home from work!

Also we had those thick fogs that hung around the Trent and other small rivers around the city.

One night shift, several of our staff on their way to the pit got "stuck" on the traffic island at Dunkirk where the fire station used to be/still is??

They found the island and couldn't find their way to get off it !!! Took them a while to live that one down, I can tell you!

I remember a Nott's County mid week cup game being stopped because of fog / mist only a few years ago .

We had just scored and it was as if the Gods didn't like it, because before they kicked off again the pitch was covered by a mist rolling in from the Trent !!

It was used as a "What happened next" question on the popular BBC1 programme 'A Question of Sport'

(I can remember it vividly as Notts don't score that often)

Sorry to all fellow Notts fans but I thought I'd get that in and spoil the 'F' words fun!!!!!

I remember trying to drive home from work in Hucknall and getting totally lost by just watching the kerb from the passenger side and of course did not see junctions and ended up totally lost on my home to Redhill.

Still trying to work my round this site as did not have much success first time round and gave up!  At  rough guess it was around 1971 I was at Babels.  Little dance floor with a resident belly dancer.  Did a bit myself but that is another story!

Went to Carrington Lido as a child in the 50s... I remember there were wire baskets to put your clothes in and the water was always soooo cold (as it would be being outdoor!). There were fountains at the end of the pool.

I remember people stretched out by the side of the pool sunbathing - there was some grass to lie on.

Wasn't there a cinema nearer to the Lido than the Metropole?  I remember trying to go in there with a girlfriend of mine when we were 14.  It was an Elvis film and must have been an 'A' as we were asked how old we were.  We told the truth and we weren't allowed in!

Oh yes, I remember the freezing Carrington Lido in the 60s!  There used to be a private boys's school nearby on the same road.  There was another (indoor pool) called the Noel Street Baths we were taken to by the school.   I also remember the Metropole at the top of the hill on Mansfield Road.  All in all there were several good cinemas in Nottingham at the time,  The Metropole, The Gaumont, The Elite, The Odeon and The Mechanics (known as the flea pit!)     I used to live in Redhill near Arnold.

  7. I remember a few bad ones and the walk back from school along Haydn Road - we used to get sent home if it was really bad. I definitely remember people with torches guiding cars past Meridian; in fact I remember being confronted by a car driving very slowly along the pavement - the driver had no idea where the road was.

Was that the primary school on Haydn Road? My brother went there.

  8. I was about 10 living in West Bridgford and my dad worked at the power station in Wilford. He finished his shift about 5.00pm and the smog came down and he tried to drive home. A colleague was also trying to get home on foot. He decided to help my dad and walked in front of his car with a torch all the way from Wilford to Edward Road in West Bridgford arriving hours later at night. He declined the offer of a bed for the night and decided he wanted to continue walking home and disappeared into the fog. My father was eternally grateful to him.

  9. started my club life with the dungeon where great acts like steam packet( long john, rod stewart, Julie driscoll) lead me to see Jimmy Cliff ,..Jimmmy James and the great Jimmy Hendrix at the beachcomber. Friday and Sunday nights were spent in the Brit, Boat and the Union clubs at Trent bridge. We all use to gather outside Saxones and get the bus down Arkwright street, past Selectadisc .The pigalle, colemans, flying horse, bodega and many more places would take mer down the nostalgic route...i then left nottingham for a student life in Manchester where i worked some of the best clubs in England..the twisted wheel. time and place and the legend that was Blinkers where George Best spent many an evening....Worked the Hippo club in 1971 and became part of the sandpiper, babel set ...would love to hear from anyone who has tales to tell .....ps am still into my music and the odd night clubbing!

I remember the Hippo Club that always seemed to be playing Ride a White Swan and that song always reminds me of those days. Also I worked as a waitress at the Babel Club on Huntingdon Street with Kurt and Zak. I remember when Kurt's girlfriend Liz won a beauty contest and they went off with the prize of an African Safari.

There were belly dancers there I recall.
