  1. Stevensons yes that was it. Thanks Craig

I had a pair of bronze coloured jeans from there. They were very fashionable around 1962. Turn ups were in too.

Anyone remember those square cut Italian ties?

Before Levi's became popular, there were two very good brands of jeans, probably many more, but I remember these, one was Varlson, and the other was.........and you know what...the name has just gone out of my head!

I also had a pair of the bronze ones, which when you turned them up, had almost dark yellow innards.

The cheap jeans of the day were Tec Sak, or possibly Tec Sac, and were very thin material by comparison.

Then of course the likes of Levi, Wrangler and Lee all became the ones to have in the mid sixties onwards.

I still have my very first pair of 501's which are in a state of ruin, I'll try and post a pic on here.

  2. Re the Macmillan Motown doo! it sells out amazingly quickly!

There are two a year, first one this year is on Saturday April 5, and the person you need to contact ASAP is Mal, (female) on 07977 800 265

Tell her I told you to call, might help in case tickets are sold out.

Re Mick Parker, I know I've mentioned this before, but a mate and I were on the 43 bus into Nottingham, which went past Micks cafe on Radfrord Rd, he got on, and sat in front of us, noticing I had an LP in my hand, and seeing the front cover, he enquired if I liked The Beach Boys as I'd got their album......except it was The Isly Brothers Soul On The Rocks LP, I found this amusing that despite owning the club that played so much Motown, he didn't recognise one of Motowns best LP's,

  3. Me and some mates The Clifford's also living on Northgate would go and press our noses up against jack Clayton's windows on a Sunday afternoon, when they were closed, I remember Steven saying he wanted a Viking bike, but I'd set my heart on a Dawes Realm Rider, which my mum scrimped and saved to eventually buy me.

It was a real treat to go back and buy tape, and stoppers for the handlebars as and when the bike needed them!

How easily we were pleased back then.

  4. I watched this at Chris Nichols house in Bestwood on the Friday evening, before we went to the Dungeon.

And as far as I'm aware it was The Bar Kay's on the show.

Very sad how a number of them died, alongside Otis in that plane crash.

  5. Hi Lizzie,

It's strange but I can recall walking up Stanford St and seeing Kenny's mini van, which was green, but a light green, and yes he did, and to a degree does still look like KR!

It's been a few years since I last saw Kenny to talk to! last time I did! I was on air at Century 106 FM, and when I was doing the evening bit,mid shoot straight up to the now closed Fox just up the road in Sneinton, where he used to drink.

There are a fair few ex Dungeon members that go to the Motown and Soul night that I do for Macmillan cancer care at the Polish club on Sherwood Rise, have you ever been?

Stu Morris, Jan, and mondo Caine are regulars there! sadly Stu is confined to a wheelchair now though.

  6. I lived in Nottingham in the 60s and used to go to the Boat Clubs (Brit rather than the Boat or Union), Beachcomber , Dungeon, Dancing Slipper (West Bridgeford) usually on my scooter (1959 LD150). Towards the late 60s used to go to the Mojo, Twisted Wheel and the Night Owl. The Britannia Boat Club, Beachcomber and Night Owl were my favourites!Apart from seeing all the US big names there was a really good local bands. In particular at the Beachcomber there was a regular band called Robert Hirst and the Big Taste who could do half decent covers of soul tracks. Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames were regulars there and they always got a good crowd.Guys I remember were, Kenny Sharp, Little Eric, Manfred, Click (a.k.a. Clifford Brown), Ben, Radio (more about him later), Pop Donald, Dave Mace, on their scooters Blonde John, Drac, Andy Clifford, Fat Pat, Dave One tab, Randy, Ciggy, Martin ? Basher Bates (Roger) and the will be loads more that I forgot because I’m old. Anyway the one thing that brought all of these guys together at which ever of the clubs was the soul music. There was a time in the mid-60s when Radio and I spent a bit of time together both in Nottingham and down in Leicester at the Night Owl (this was pre-Viv). I think his usual mates Click and Ben were busy. Anyway during our time together I learnt a few things , is real name was Richard Booth and interestingly enough he was directly descended from General Booth the Nottingham founder of the Salvation Army. The origins of ‘s name Radio was similarly interesting he told me that it stood for Rape And Destruction I Offer – I believed him!!I was very sad to learn of his departure some years ago see this link:http://www.thisisannouncements.co.uk/5650095?s_source=clmi_innn

    Dave one tab!

Or Dave Nyman to give him his proper name.

I remember saying what a nice shirt he had on one night, and he asked if I wanted to buy it for five bob, so I gave him the money, a lot for a 14 year old I might add, and long story short he said he'd give it me the next night......and he didn't!

  7. Paulus

Kenny Astle's mini van was either a very pale green, or light grey, and had that letter "E" on the back of it.

I did ask at the time, and was told it stood for free love, cos if you removed certain bits of the E, you could make an F for free, and an L, for love from it.......

  8. Hi Beduth,

You are a few years older than me, but a lot of the places and people you mention certainly ring bells!

Can I correct you on the Egypt rd school name?

Although it was indeed on that road, it was called Northgate primary, but there were still some of the teachers you mention when I got there.

As for the Panthers autographs, they were done for you two years before I was born, but yes I did meet some of the other players later on, in fact I became friends with Archie and Gwen Singecombe in later years when I took up karate and bought my " gi" from their shop on Alfreton Rd.

You were right about my dad living close by to you, it was actually at 86 Northgate, exactly opposite Bob and Sadie Cartwrights beer off

You mention a boy with the surname Dalziel, I was at Northgate primary with a kid called Andrew Dalziel, who we used to call razzle dazzle, wonder if it could have been your mates younger brother?

The " Battles" between the gangs I spoke about were round about 1965, so different kids I'd say.

    Anyway, keep those memories coming!

  9. Paulus,

Pretty sure it was not Jimmy O'Kane.

We all used to think it was amusing his name sounded the same as cocaine, funny what you found funny at age 14 wasn't it!

And yes, I know the bung' s minimum age was 16 but I looked older, and had doctored someone else's membership card, naughty wasn't i!!!!

Once again I bumped into little Eric last week, where we exchanged memories of Stanford street like a right pair of old women, :)

Somewhere ages back on here I mentioned the non soul tracks that were played there, quite amusing as it was the home of soul and Motown.....anyway, here's a few I remember! feel free to add yours,

    Beatles Theres a place

    Manfred Mann. Pretty Flamingo

    Mamas and Papas. Monday Monday

    Chris Farlowe. Out Of time

    Small faces.........lots of them!

    The Who. Substitute.

    Move. Night of fear

    Beach Boys. Good Vibrations

Yep, some oddities considering the other stuff played.

  10. Thanks Mudgie

Interesting to note he has never corrected me about his " new" name! :)

Did you know a guy called Randy?

He was at Claremont school at the same time as me, albeit older, also Jimmy Cocayne?

I think that's how his surname was spelt!

  11. I used to get trendy clothes from Lawrences down Hockley. I bought a flowered shirt and flowered lace tie. Then my dad went down and bought them for himself. He still has the tie.

I was quite lucky as my brother lived in a Mews off the Kings Road and I spent at least one weekend a month with him.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't read the above message in the type it was originally posted in.
