Tec Sac. Probably made in China were about Thee cheapest denim going! Varlson was a fairly good brand, not on par with Wrangler, Lee or Levi's though.
I don't recall Brutus being around in the 60's though, I believe the 70's were their time.
It was certainly the time they advertised them heavily, remember David Dundas singing Jeans On?
It had the words changed to " I pull Brutus jeans on...... "

Sounds like the old Mr Picwicks.
Most probably, as the decor was definitely not Indian restaurant style!

I don't recall him getting beaten up in a pub, surely it was on a piece of derelict land by the two squaddies?Certainly the bulk of 'Saturday Night' was filmed in Nottingham, which is why it is good with the ambience. There are several threads on Nottstalgia discussing that subject, as well as the locations of the few 'foreign' scenes.
The pub where Albert Finney falls down the stairs is/was the White Horse on Ilkeston Road. The building is still there but it's now a cafe. The other pub in the film - where he gets beaten up - is in London.

De Pete the camera i use is a small Canon Power Shot SX130,you might call it the Instamatic of today.Americana next year will be moving south to Leicestershire to a bigger and better facility,so may see you there.
A good deal closer for the majority of folk in Nottingham to get to as well!
I'm very privileged to say that Chris Jackson the organiser has asked me to supply some music in the way of a disco playing some good old favourites from the likes of the Motown stable.
Can't wait!

To add a bit more to the confusion, remember that St James St is BOTH sides of Maid Marian Way, so denshaw's suggestion of the Albany could still be correct.
I thought we had agreed it was there.........or maybe as I'm posting on a few sites at the moment we didn't!
But yes, it was the one underneath The Albany.
-
The only curry house I've ever been aware of on an upper level was on Upper Parliament St, opposite the old Co op building, Alea Casino as it is now.
-
Ref my earlier post, I got my streets mixed up, St James St was further down heading into town!
D'oh!
And I don't know exactly when it was first there, but it was certainly around during the latter part of the 70's.

If you have/ get " Tuneinradio " you will find Solid Gold Gem AM easily.
Please remember to put the whole name in, not just Gem, as that's a different station.
-
In case you wonder where the people in the pic, and indeed other Trent/Gem AM presenters are now, here's the answer.
Basically there are two Internet only radio stations that are now the "homes" for us old Trenters!
Radio Trent 301 has John Peters, Guy Morris, Jeff Cooper, Ron Coles ,Jeff Owen, and Tim Rogers.
Solid Gold Gem AM has myself, Andy Marriott ( Marrow) Len Groat, Krissi Carpenter, Paul Burbank, and Mark Mason.
The current Trent in actuality is not reproducing what was played on the original, although obviously now and then those songs do appear.
Whereas Solid Gold Gem AM is doing exactly what the original Gem AM did, complete with the jingle packages made in Dallas, and put together now, as then, by Len Groat.

Steve Merike ran for Nottingham City Council as a Conservative in the late 80's/early 90's under his real name.
He certainly did, Michael Willis was that name.
-
Might well be it!
I remember there being an Italian which was basement level higher up the street, it became an Indian at a later date, but as I said, it was almost at the top of St James St, too high up for it to be part of The Albany building.

I'm looking to find where exactly Naz's restaurant was in Nottingham, someone mentioned it was below a hotel, but I have no idea!
Anyone know where it was?
-
It's a pleasure, I just wish I had more time to get on here like I used to when I didn't have a daily show!
By the way, at the time the pic was taken, Graham Knight had moved to the Beeb, and Pete, older brother of Rob Wagstaff was at Beacon in Wolverhampton, or as their locals called it, Bacon Radiow.
-
Neither Graham Knight or Pete Wagstaff are in this pic, both had long since departed to other stations at this time.

Posted in the Dungeon Club section too, sad to report the sad loss of a former "top mod" Chris Nichols.
He was a mate at Claremont school, although older than me, and was well known at The Dungeon, and he rest of he clubs in Nottm of that era.
His funeral is at Bramcote at 2:45, and then The White Lion Swingate Kimberley -
I'm sad to inform any former mods and anyone that frequented The Dungeon in the mid 60's that one of the "faces" sadly passed away last Sunday due to cancer.
He was Chris Nichols, a school mate from Claremont, although few years older than me, and it was at The Dungeon I got to know him better.
I remember his bottle green bespoke suit, and going to his place one Friday evening to watch the Otis Redding special on Ready Steady Go! On the black and white telly!
His funeral is Friday June 28 at Bramcote Crematorium at 2:45
And then after at The White Lion, Swingate in Kimberley.
Sadly I can't make either due to work commitments, but please pass the word on if you knew him.
-
Just to even up the posts a bit, a little bit of mod stuff then.
Shopping in Beeston a week or so back, I bumped into a guy that was one of the well know faces from the Dungeon, non other than "Little Eric" remember him.? Often suited and booted in a bottle green suit with the mandatory massive single 13" vent!
I mentioned the Macmillan Cancer Care Motown night at The Polish Club on March 16' and he said he's going to try and get there, it would be good if as many former Dungeon dwellers and original mods could get there, but despite there being a month till its on, tickets are usually sold out, however sometimes there are one or two spare when people that have bought them can't go after all.

My grandad used to take me there when I was a small boy, I always had a bottle of orange pop and a bag of crisps!
-
I used to paddle all the way along from where the bridge is opposite the market, to where the concrete area that housed the swings and roundabout, and remember the leeches getting into my wellies when the water went over the top of them!
My mum also tells me that I fell into the Leen and had to be rescued by gypsy's too!
I don't remember that at all............

Hi Craig, hope you are well.....yes still frequented Babels through the 70s...if I remember Ian Clarke was a sometime DJ when the club first opened....He lived over in bridgford, and had been at university with me in Manchester.
No I didnt know him, I actually applied to a firm called New Junktion Discotheques, to be a mobile jock, weddings and functions etc, and at the audition I thought they were saying to me they didnt want me, as it turned out they were saying they thought I,d be a great club DJ, and did I still want to work for them!
I obviously said yes, and I recall a two week stint working at The Heart Of The Midlands with The Dooleys in 79, before covering at a lot of the clubs NJD put DJ,s in, and ended up as resident at The Babel, but it was Dave Ross/Penna and Stewart Barnham and Keith from the audio shop that used to be on Market St called RSC who were the DJ<s then, as well as John Dolby who I have been working with recently at Ambersound FM.
-
Just about my first gig as a DJ involved working at the HOTM with The Dooleys.
I was a little naive I guess, and was rather disappointed at how Jim Dooley said exactly the same thing at the same time to the audiance every night!
I don't think I impressed him either when one night when I was leaving, he was in the foyer signing autographs, and as I walked by he asked me what I thought of their new song, Wanted, I replied......yes its good, but it sounds so much like Abba!
