  1. Went to the newish restaurant in Long Eaton, something Express, next to the railway barter shop, the one Bip mentioned ages ago. Had my usual lamb bhuna, madras hot, extra dhaniya, it was pleasant, hot enough, but lacked taste, and needed salt. Odd too that the pickle tray did not have the onion "salad", and had to be asked for.

Decor reminded me more of a Chinese restaurant more than Indian though.

Service was excellent and speedy, ok, I was the only one in there, but I don't believe I will be returning anytime soon.

  2. Come on then boys and girls, let's get this thread back on topic......remember.............soul music? !cheers! I hope you are listening to my soul show on Ambersound fm (plus ambersoundfm.com) Tuesday evening at 9.

Three solid hours of quality tracks, first hour club classics, second is all Motown, and the third nothing but the best of northern soul.

  3. I mentioned The Ace Record Shop (dirty book shop) when I started the thread, good to see ya keeping up!

Joking apart, re Flanaghans, it was an Irish guy who had a dodgy eye, and he would seem to look at the door of the shop, as opposed to looking at you when he spoke to you!

  4. Now you mention that Ashley, I can see in my minds eye Mr Flynn behind the counter, wearing a jumper with no shirt underneath, which was quite unusual back then. As I mentioned ages ago, Terry had a sister who worked at a textile factory next door to Cartwrights beer off on Northgate.

And, as Jeff says twice, I spy was indeed Jamo Thomas (and the party brothers orchestra) Possibly the confusion with Edwin arose because they were both on Polydor over here?

  5. I have been asked by the guy writing a film for the BBC about The Sex Pistols Trial which took place in Nottingham in 1977, to try and find anyone who met them/saw them during their time here.

I understand they visited a number of radio stations, it was before my time on Trent, so if you heard them, let me know please.

In particular he has asked if I can trace the manager of Virgin Records when they were on King Street in Nottingham.

His name is Chris Searle, I may be wrong but I seem to recall him being at Selectadisc at some time.

    Can you help?

Replies either here or via pm, whichever you prefer.

    Thanks.

  6. !clapping!

not much input from mods on this thread .mind you I could only afford wranglers and big Tees, and my bus fare home.

    !jumping!

    sensitive keyboard

Ah...the Tuf boots Big T! I think it was law at the time for all mods to have a pair!

I remember the prices of the "big 3" jeans brands too, Wrangler were 42/6, Lee were 49/6 and Levi 501's were 52/6.

The matching Levi denim jacket was 63/3.

Limey, Ashley also used to wear a parka on his 650 Triumph!

  7. We seem to have more than our fair share of power outs around where I live, which is in the borough named above, and, maybe by coincidence. the street light opposite my house failed the day after.

I reported it the following day, and, according to the council, they came out to it within 7 working days, but failed to repair it.

Eventually, after 3 weeks and one day, it was repaired.

Why is it in that time NASA can send a man to the moon and back, but a street light cant be mended?

BBC, I think its time to stop using those Ikea bulbs!

  8. Agreed Stu, Evans is a bit 'in your face' in the mornings, Simon Mayo doesn't have the charisma and sparkle in the evenings and the ones in between don't do a lot for me. I don't particularly care for Terry's sunday morning show either, it just isn't my kind of thing. Radio 2 is pretty grim anyway at the weekend, I can't work out who it's supposed to appeal to, not me, apart from a few exceptions, Brian Matthew, Bob Harris, Johnny Walker, they all play good stuff along with midweek evening programmes by Paul Jones and Mike Harding.

Funny, all the really old boys, but they know their stuff, old and new, and it wasn't a problem for the late lamented John Peel on Radio 1.

I've switched to Radio 6, I think it's fantastic, you never know whats coming next, it could be Bowie, Half Man Half Biscuit, Biffi Clyro, anybody, I love it, only the BBC want to axe it as a cost cutting exercise, pathetic, lets continue to put our money in to keeping Steve Wright and his 30 year old routine alive, give Craigs orange friend a living and support the employment of so called DJ's like the whining, pathetic Alan Carr and his band of brothers.

    Ha ha! Good post Firbeck!

I have to add Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie to that listen to list, and like many, I have yet to listen to Mr Evans for longer than 5 minutes, and despite loving every minute of Terry's brekky show, I'm finding it difficult to get into his new Sunday show.

  9. Hi guys, most of the stuff mentioned is accurate, but I honestly dont recall him being on Gem. *Update* just got a text back from Paul Robey, who was one time PC at Gem, and he confirms my thoughts that Chris never worked on Gem.

Back in 1980, him and Graham Knight persuaded me to do a charity walk, from Langley Mill, to The Old Market Square in Nottingham, except Chris worked out that the pubs would be closed by the time we got there, and decided to run it instead, around a half marathon with no training! Needless to say I was unable to walk for 3 days afterwards!

In early 99 we met up again when I did a roadshow for Century, as a freelance, and he was on it too, I then went on to work for the station, and at the time he did a phone in, with a guy called Alex Belfield answering his calls, Alex went on to bigger things, and at one time was on Capital Gold.

During his time here in the UK, he was on Talk, Beacon, Trent, and BBC Southern Counties.

  10. The Royal Regency Ilson- Last Friday of every month

    Festival inn trowell

Stage 1 Long Eaton - last saturday of the month

    The Shed in Beeston

    Red!

    Where have you been?

The Royal Regency closed back in November 2008, and, as All my posts around that time pointed out, has transferred to The Westgate Suites, Westgate Long Eaton, where, as at Ilson, is always a packed house! As before it's the final Friday of the month.

Stu, Saturday is the night for "our" music at The Waggon & Horses, not Sunday!

  11. I recall a café called the Gingham Kitchen, on the street that runs parallel to Parliament street at the back of the bit of the Vicky Centre opposite the main part of it (Clear as mud I know ) Lincoln Street I think. It runs at right angles to Thurland street though

(I've just found a photo on Google earth but I can't 'borrow' it for some reason)

My uncle, despite being rather wealthy to say the least, ( his father was the founder of Albert Martin Holdings, and Martin Emprex, suppliers to M & S,) had his "wedding tea" in The Gingham Kitchen after marrying my auntie. I could never understand that, coincidentally, they lived next door to Dale Winton when he was still living in Nottingham, in Malvern Court, Mapperley Rd, and were mentioned by Dale in his biography, but by pseudonyms as he mentions some rather odd behaviour by my auntie! ( Par for the course it would seem, when a couple with more than 6 zeros on the end of their bank balance has a wedding celebration at The Gingham Kitchen!)

He would often be the poorest looking man (dress wise) in the pub just up from The Hole In The Wall, can't recall what it's called, odd eh?
