  1. My mum is racking her brain trying to remember all the shops that were on Northgate, so far I believe there were 57, I'll get the list from her and post them here when I can.

I 'll start the ball rolling, Bob & Sadie Cartwright, beer off, Simpsons groceries, Butlers hardware, Stuarts decorators, Breffits butchers, Dixons barbers, Rogers barbers, Orgills drapery and clothing, Stan Boswell chip shop, Drivers chip shop Tweeds dairy, Guys hardware, Timothy Whites chemist, Penns tobacconist and sweet shop, Grants green grocers, Alan & Kevins fancy goods, Walkers beer off , Wallis electrical, Marsdens grocers, Burrows butchers, Rowena hair dressers, Kearneys dry cleaners, Tomlinson (my auntie) drapery, and thats all I have time for at the minute.

    Please add your remembered shops.

  2. Soul Man...Sam and Dave

Think some of the others mentioned on here were released on the Atlantic label in this country..I know cos I have them on vinyl..maybe they were on Stax in the USA.

    pete c....still riding a vespa

Only just spotted this! Afaia, Atlantic handled Stax releases up until a certain date, at which time, all the Stax stuff thru Atlantic, came out on blue Stax

  3. Popped in for a quick pint last night, seeing only 2 real? ales, (Speckled Hen and Directors Bitter), I only had a swift half.

I chose the Directors but wish I'd just turned on my heels! The beer was hand drawn, but had the distinctive electric pump texture and taste to it, rather like John Smiths Smooth.

Bland, not a great taste, and in my opinion a rip off as a full pint is £2.85, but a half is £1.50!

I noticed 3 other beers between £2.85 and £3.00, and halves were all £1.50, how much extra profit does that make them when folk drink halves!

As for the place itself, it is obviously now really a restaurant with a bar that non diners can use, but unless I feel the need to sample their food, I wont go there again.

  4. This thread has triggered some memories, My first 35mm camera was a Halina 35x, bought from Eddys on Alfreton Rd. A couple of years later, I used to window shop at Dixons, and was in there so often, they offered me a job, which I took, anyone remember a handsome young lad in a suit there?

Previous to that, whilst still an apprentice electrician, I got my first "real" SLR, a Zenith E, which the stupid salesman hadn't bothered to tell me had a manual lens, which needed "shutting down" after focusing, and before a pic was taken, I cant remember how much film I wasted taking everything at F2! Not long after that, I had a Prinzflex TTL, with a 1.4 lens, which, like the Chinon brand, was a make that Dixons sold with one of their names on it

It seemed that most, if not all the folk in the city's camera shops knew each other, I had mates at Camera thorpe, and the other shop higher up Pelham St,what was that one called??? also at Collwyn Cameras, which became Cameo Cameras.

Having access to all that gear really got my interest going during my stint at Dixons, and the Prinzflex was soon traded in for a Nikkormat Ftn, the lowest priced Nikon, which back 40 years ago was 20 times my wage!

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the entry level camera, and soon got rid, going for the top of the range Nikon F, with a Photomic Ftn head, (an interchangeable ttl meter) and interchangeable focusing screens. That one cost more than 30+ times my wage back then!

Now, here comes the sad bit, having just gotten married, I wanted something smaller, and ended up going to London Camera Exchange, Camera Thorpe's old shop, and doing a straight swap for a Canon Sureshot Supreme, at around a third the value of the Nikon, then again, a short time after, I did get a Nikon FE2 with a motor drive, and many genuine Nikkor lenses whilst 35mm was still king, but again, sold on at a loss!

I still have a Pentax K1000 I think, with a couple of nice genuine Pentax lenses, (wide angle and zoom) which is up for sale if anyone is interested?

  5. Interesting, is the running horse in fact still open? all it says is bookings are moved, have a feeling that's the end of live bands there, for years there have been noise complaints, you see in a while a "due to outstanding sucess of new venue" etc announcement.

Whilst I'm at it can any one give me names of Basford Pubs (New or Old) that have shut (mainly in the clearance era)

Are you talking recently Ash, or what?

Back in the day, there was The Eland, The Rose And Crown, The Star, The Pelham, The Scotholme, and many more.

  6. Round at my mums today, and having a search through her attic, and found the paper mentioned above, from January 1967, and in the entertainment section were ads for most if not all the popular clubs of the day, inc The Dungeon, Beachcomber, Brit etc.

The forthcoming line up for the Dungeon included Charlie and Inez Foxx (wrong way round for some reason) Ben "E" King, The Drifters, and The Spellbinders, admission for most was around 3/6 ! 18p !!

I will retrieve it and scan and post on here when I can.

  7. Frank, Ive driven by the place a million times, and never been in, until that time.

As it is, I was in there tonight, last Mon, Thurs, and Saturday! Yes, Ive tried the EPA, but must say I have a penchant for the Rock bitter!

The last few Mondays, my mum has done a bit of a spread to add to the table of free food, which is a great idea, do you ever get in late afternoon(5 ish) early evening on a Monday? If so say hi if Im there, ask Phil the brewer, or Mel to point me out.

  8. Craig, my sincere apologies for misunderstanding your sentence re Keith Holland. I have no idea who Keith Holland is but I expect he and his family would appreciate a little less candour. Never the less, although the sentence you used was grammatically a little unorthodox, I completely take your word that the subject of the sentence wasn't me. I hope other readers of this forum don't draw the same initial erroneous conclusion that I did.!

Again, thank you for taking the trouble to set the record straight.

    Apology graciously accepted! !englandflag!

Now, for your information, the Hollands were a large family who lived in Casey Court, off Northgate, which, for want of a better description, was a plot of houses around a central piece of unkempt ground, which Nottingham Council, or whoever, saw fit to demolish it, as it was rather an eyesore to say the least. Some less diplomatic folk might have called it a slum. The younger ones from the family always had runny noses, and, all of them were scruffy, and some of them were dirty, as in not washed on a regular basis.

At Northgate school, I would often end up with Keith as the nearest person to me during the dances one did as a child, having to link hands, and the smell of the day before s chocolate on his hands would make me heave, hence my earlier comment, which you mistakenly thought referred to you.

Ah! Mac Walters, I do know him, or at least did.

I also knew the Gregorys, I believe Andrew Tregannawen (misspelt)? was a cousin.

  9. Sorry Craig, you have definitely got me confused with some one else. I left the Northgate Primary school in 1955. which was probably before you even went there. Miss Croydon was headmistress, during my time time. There was another Dawes family that lived in the area, possibly near Palm Street, and the smelly. one you mentioned presumably belonged to that particular clan. I can assure you that my family, and the family's of all the people I have previously mentioned were all very well scrubbed (Not one pong between us)The teachers you mentioned were not there during the time that I was there. So ipso facto, you've got it wrong pal...

    Possibly a retraction and apology?

Keith, I think a visit to Specsavers may be in order for you!

Take a look back to where you think I mention you.......the answer is nowhere, the Keith I refer to is Keith Holland, clearly printed for all to see, with no mention of your surname.

It says, and I quote "As for the HOLLANDS on Northgate, I was at Northgate Primary with Keith" ie Keith Holland, not you!

As for confusing you with someone else, I replied to your post only tell you the teachers that were there in my time, and at no stage did I say I knew you, or of you.

Now who needs to retract and apologise?

  10. My very first pair of ice skates belonged to John Keetley( is that how you spell it, I thought it was Keightley?) Dunno why, but I seem to recall they came my way via Graham Pridmore.

As for the Hollands on Northgate, I used to be at Northgate Primary with Keith, and, sorry if you are reading this Keith, but you smelt!

Having just seen Durnford St mentioned, it reminded me that I saw Trevor Towle who lived there the other day, anyone else remember him?

Also, my very first job was sat The Coop on Egypt Rd, in fact I worked there whilst still at school, that also reminds me, I was doing a soul gig the other night and Ian Birkin came up and said hello, now, it is a flipping long time since Ive seen him, he lived just up from The Coop, on the same side

Also whilst at Northgate Primary, amongst my friends were two people, whose parents must have had a warped sense of humour.

There were 2 sisters, Marlene Rick, and her sister Pamela, who when she signed her name, it became PRick, and a lad whose name was Michael, nothing unusual so far, except his last name was Hunt, and obviously his first name was shortened to Mike....Mike Hunt, do you know Mike Hunt???????? !rotfl!

  11. Driving through St Peters St in Radford, a month or two back, and for the first time, noticed The Nottingham Brewerey at the side of The Plough, now Im always one for Locale, and decided to pop in for one.

I had a pint of Rock Bitter, fabulous beer! (I've had many more since) They also have Rock Mild, Legend, Bullion, other guest beers, real cider and scrumpy, and currently there's a tie up between the brewery and Smooth Radio, selling "Smooth Bitter" not to be confused with other makes so called smooth stuff!

And a strange coincidence in the "small world" category, the brewery owner Phil, and my mum have known each other 20 odd years, ( I knew of a Phil, who was involved in catering back then, but not in person) and even my daughter when she was about 4 had visited his premises)

Prices are really good too, a pint of Rock Bitter is currently £2.35, and you get a stamp to fill in a card, collect 10, and its a free pint, or glass of wine, also given with a stamp.

2 0r 3 of their beers won medals at the recent beer festival at Nottingham Castle too.

  12. Thursday afternoon, there was a guy in his early 20's knocking on all the doors in Trowell, with the aim of giving each household a ticket, advertising the chance to win a new Nissan Micra, or £6k cash.

Now, being of the "theres no such thing as a free lunch" person, I asked where was the catch, he said there was no catch, just that if you won anything, and that there were other prizes up for grabs, you tell all your friends and neighbours, adding that they were a new electrical company, just starting up in Basford, (despite it being a Lincoln phone number 01522 306128 on the ticket) and that this was their way of spreading the word. The ticket has RTS Services on it.

Anyway, I refused, but he triply assured me that there were absolutely no catches, and they were not trying to sell me something, so I took the ticket, and gave my mobile number as requested, "so we can contact you if you win". I thought no more of it until 24 hours later, when I got a call.

"Hello Mr Strong, just calling to say your ticket has been entered into the draw, and guess what, you've been lucky! Your ticket number has come up, and you have been awarded a free shampoo for all of your carpets"

At that point I told them exactly what I thought of them, and requested they remove my details from their database.

I was in the past, a little more trusting, and accepted one of these "free" carpet cleaning "prizes" and basically they are THEE most high pressure salesmen, trying to get you to buy an astonishingly high priced cleaner system, that makes Dyson seem like Tesco value range.

Dont give them your details if you are contacted, its a waste of time!

  13. I'm glad I can't pick up BBC York then, I'd prefer to see him working for BBC Rockall, and based there, permanently.

If the BBC see him as the future of prime time radio, I'll stick to CD's in future.

I'd like to know what talent this man has, or is my previous description of him the medias idea of what they think the public want.

Sorry Craig, without question, everyone I know thinks he's a complete t@sser, if he's that good, he would have had a permanent prime time spot years ago, clearly some people in the business have some sense.

One mans meat....as the saying goes!

It would be a boring old place if we all liked the same thing, for me though, Id rather listen to RA than CE anyday.
