  1. I lived on Bailey St (probably the cul de sac) in the early 50s til we moved to Midland Rd in 1958, the factory was Staffords, something to do with printing, if you were quick and brave enough you could run through the main entrance and out onto Curzon St. On the other side of Forester St was a removals firm, Harris/Harrisons I think they were called, next to them was a Bakery, myself and a few pals found this place ridiculously easy to gain entrance to and help ourselves to the tasty treats within.

  2. Beachbum, as you lived in the butchery world you may know the answer to this....

Was there a butcher's shop somewhere on St Ann's Well Road in the early 60s where the owner/boss/manager was a woman?

I had an uncle who worked in such a place.

Sorry does'nt ring any bells, I do remember a little butchers outfit not far from Commercial Sq, up a little alleyway to some small premises. You may know them now as Pork Farms.

  3. As a lad living in Netherfield trying to earn a shilling or two like many others I took on a paper round, first with Bloors and then Dawsons then later with Pete Tarry. Recently a friend here in Mabo who runs a newsagents told me he was struggling to get people for deliveries and could I help him out for a while, well what could I say, I'm now a born again paper boy, aka news deliverer, I've come full circle, at least I don't have to rush to get the inkwells filled and the blackboard cleaned.

  5. As Mabos raised its head again thought i might chip in with a few words, its so busy, which is nice, when we've had the good weather the beaches have been packed, even the donkeys have had to have re-enforcements, really nice on the front last Saturday, a buskers day, everything from bagpipes to penny whistles, on Sunday The RNLI opened its doors to the public, lots of money raised for a really good cause. Sept 14th-16th The Bathing Beauties Festival, a good W'end.

Oct 14th the motorbike sand racing starts again, fortnightly til March31st.

Has anyone heard if Jimmy87 has departed Nottingham yet, myself and the Beachwalker are waiting to meet him so that he can buy us a pint, or two

  6. Like a lot of people from Nottingham i spent summer holidays in Mablethorpe, always on Victoria Rd, opposite The Eagle, (probably Dads choice), loved going the bottom of the garden, through the hedge and out on to Queens park, up onto the front and walk into town, a few holiday shillings burning a hole in my pocket to spend as i wanted, the arcades being the first stop, sizing up the penny cascades to see where i could win a few extra coppers, did'nt happen very often. I loved coming to Mabo, even told my Mum i would live here one day.

In 2004 my present wife and myself decided to have a bit of an adventure, so we sold up and moved to the village of Pruna in Andalucia, we returned in 2009 and stayed at North Somercotes, (the place to be in Nov-Jan when the seals are ashore giving birth and breeding) raw nature at its best. After the death of my wifes Mother it was decided by me (i think) to move to Mabo, been here for just over two years and i still love it. The town does need dragging, kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but not to much. Ive been on the front when kids race up onto the prom and just stop and stare at the sea the sand and the donkeys, probably much like we did years ago. The Leicester Childrens Home on Quebec Rd is still in use in the summer, introducing more children to the delights of the English seaside.

Well thats my twopennorth for now.

  7. I remember the Beech Nut chewing gum machines, there was one on a shop wall opposite the Sunday school at the top of Chandos St. in Netherfield, we'd be given 2d for the collection, however 1d went in the collection and the other in said machine, the knob on it had a little arrow on it, if it pointed toward you you got two packs for the price of one, an early bogof i suppose.

  8. I remember the the sweet shop on Meadow Rd, think it was called The Tuck Shop, a favourite from there was a knickerbocker glory, on a Sunday my dad would stop there on his way back from sugarbeet and get tizer and vanilla ice cream, served together, yummy.

  9. I loved Spanish Wood, as a kids we'd chew it for hours til it looked like a horses tail, great for spitting contests too, had some not long ago from a shop in Louth, it was horrible, has it changed or is it me??

  10. Played golf on Wednesday during which i played a par three hole using an eight iron, i hit the ball so well it rose like a young salmon, hit the green and rolled to within two feet of the hole, my playing partner (who is not from Nottingham) said "thats a great shot" i said thanks, two for a tenner on sneinton market

  11. I remember in the 50s' when i lived on Bailey St in Netherfield an Asian chap lugging a huge suitcase would call regularly doorstep selling all sorts of household cleaning products, dusters, polish, brushes etc, If Mum had the money she would always buy something, i never knew why, we ended up having more stock than him.

  12. Passed my test in 73' in High Wycombe, and living in Beaconsfield at the time, bought my brother-in-laws car, a Bull Nosed Morris DMT 53 complete with split windscreen and indicator arms, thats when you indicate with your own arm if the fancy took you, and it was'nt to cold.
