News from Mabo,The Eagle opened last week,and looking very nice, and the beers not at all bad, its still a work in progress, did'nt see the Bel Ami jukebox, the last song i heard on it was Tommy Bruce 'Aint Misbehavin', heard a song on the wireless this morning which took me back to 63' The Crystals 'Then he kissed me'. The Louth has just changed hands and being re-furbished , tables and chairs on the pavement, very continental. The Book is also changing hands,watch this space. The Fulbeck is now The Beck, more carvery than pub,and the chippy on Quebec road is still frying.

In the mid 60s i worked at the George Hotel and then Yates', i worked downstairs in the St James restaurant, we even sold draught champagne at two and six a glass. One perk of the job was to get the complimentary cinema tickets the place recieved for advertising the cinema, the only people in the cinemas in the afternoons would be hotel and bar staff killing time before re-opening time, the only draw back was that you mostly had to leave before the main film finished, having said that, a lot of the time you were'nt particularly interested in the film anyway.

Remember the Comerys well,some other neighbours on Bailey St as i recall, Jennifer Hayes, Malcolm Coffee, Jeffrey and Grenville Mawer, Morris and David Flint, Nigel and Judith Peck, i think Mick Meehuw (apologies for the spelling) lived there, Derek Crisp?, as previously mentioned, Whites chippy on one corner and Grace Carnells grocery shop on the other, Roy Ward lived round the corner on Forester St, as did Mick Mardell and Ada Bates and her boys Harold, Kenny and George?

I lived on Bailey St in Netherfield in the 50s, we had an outside loo, in the winter my Mum used to put in a couple of lit candles to stop it freezing, if we had money izal was the order of the day, if not squares of newspaper, we were always reluctant to use the newspaper as they could be exchanged for a bag of chips from Whites chippy on the corner. Our tin bath used to hang on the back of the coalhouse door but more often than not me and my sister would be plonked in the dolly tub. When my Mum remarried we moved (on a handcart) to Midland Rd, WOW, three bedrooms, seperate toilet and a bathroom.

Chicken and Chorizo: Serves 2/3

6 chicken thighs (skin on)

1 pkt chorizo sausage for cooking (chop in inch pieces)

8 new pots

4/5 small onions peeled and halved

4/5 garlic cloves (optional)

3tbs olive/veg oil

2 heaped tsps dried oregano

sea salt and black pepper to taste

Method: Pre heat oven to 200, place chicken skin up in large roasting tin, add onions and pots, drizzle with the oil, sprinkle oregano over everything, lightly season, bake for 40-45 mins near top of oven, reduce heat to 180 add chopped chorizo and garlic bake for further 20/25 mins or until chorizo is slightly browned.

Best served with nice crusty bread mop up the juices!!

Since my earlier post, i've spoken to a cousin who lived at the bottom end of Conway Rd in the 50/60s and he seems to recall seeing the coal buckets, perhaps its a family thing, maybe someone else can remember them.

My formative years were spent in Netherfield (Bailey St) i seem to recall the huge buckets of coal going across the sky line from Gedling pit to the big white hopper at Netherfield sheds, although no one believes me when i tell them about it, someone tell me i have'nt dreamt it.

I remember Parks corner, always knew it as that, the school dentist practiced his art there, i recall the nurse coming to Chandos St School in the late 50s/early 60s, quick check of your teeth and made the appointment, everyone dreaded it, they put a clamp in your mouth to keep it open then give you gas, you could spot who had been there, they'd be walking back with their Mam or Dad, tears in their eyes, huge scarf wrapped around their face to "

keep out the cold", small wonder our generation hated the dentist for years to come.
