  1. Hi Pimcree, as far as im aware,it was the New Welbeck, as i recall it was the only licensed premises at that exact location.

    Hi mate,

the name of that bar was 'GERSHWINS' hence the piano key staircase...!!!

    at bl@@dy last.

  2. But what was his TV show called  - the magic one and what else did he do on the TV?  slywink

was it just called 'The David Nixon Show'? about 1973-ish. was Anita Harris his assistant?

I'm sure he did the original British version of candid camera and had some connection with Basil Brush (not 100% on that one though?).

  3. spangles. Ice breaker bar. Jubbly's - those big triangular suckers.(not a dudoo, really, but I used to like them) Lucky bags. chocolate limes from the corner shop.

mmmm... ice breaker, wasn't that the choclate that had glassy, minty bits in it...?

  4. How the hell could i forget Selectadisc?!?!  I used to spend most of my hard earned in there, and knew all the staff, from Brian Selby (owner) down......And Stocks were opposite where i worked, and had the cars parked on the street, back when we could park for free.

Wow selectadisc..... one of the very last record shops with character and staff who were actually interested in their jobs 'n actually knew what they were talking about.

Was it not selectadisc that was one of the only record shops to defy the government ban and sell 'Never Mind The B######s, Here's The Sex Pistols'? Well when i say sell, i mean advertise it in the window aswell...!

My sister's boyfriend had to buy my copy as i was too young at the time lol.

  5. Ayup Frank,

Went to that sign of four shop in the early 70s to buy some plastic flies, When the guy opened the box they were stored in the box was empty, I said "it looks like they've flown off" The guy in the shop just said "No, we've sold out" I brought a furry spider and left!!!

    Rog

We used to go in there after the Saturday morning pictures (Gaumont - on Wollaton St) (sp?) and buy stink bombs then we used to go into the Co-op and drop them from the top floor down the staircase - he he.

    Oh, happy days smile2

And there was a sit in / take out chippy on Wollaton St next to the cinema where me mam used to take us sometimes on a Saturday when we had to go to the school uniform shop on Friar Lane

Was it a very strange elderly couple that ran sign of 4...?

I remember buying stink bombs/ fake plastic dog turds and leaving 'em in the entrance to vicky centre.

Was the school uniform shop called 'blacks'? or have i got the wrong end of town?

  6. Limey, would your uncle be 'Brian Dickman' by any chance?

Brian Dickman's (my mate Jason's dad) garage was originally just off the high st at the back of the conservative club. I think he moved to east thorpe st in the late 80's?

I can remember the pumping station though when i used to walk to school (when it was safe to) and i remember the guy in the cloth cap that used to man the pump.

Me mum used to fill her austin morris up there on a regular basis.

You're right about the pubs in rudd nowdays though pemberton, it's druggy central on a weekend. It used to be a top night out years ago...!

  7. Ayup PJ,

I used to frequent Ruddington in my youth, mainly the pubs, but there were some nice looking girls there and even better looking with a few guinness and ciders inside me. Brikkies, White horse, top house Red heart, so on,& so on,

    Rog

    Aye up Rog,

I spent 25 happy years growing up in ruddington, the red heart was my local when bill & mad-beryl ran it. It was comical when she'd dive over the bar, baseball bat in hand when clifton invaded every sunday night.

Me old fella still props up the bar in the jollies, tillos or the 'oss...!

  8. pj, it sounds like the only thing they didn't have you doing, was being a chimney sweep, by shoving you up the chimney!

lol... if they'd have had a chimney katy, i'm sure they would have had me come in on a sunday morning for free when the shop was shut to clean it...!?

It was all character building though, wasn't it...!

  9. I don't quite have the age and experience of some of your lot, but I think I witnessed the back end of child labour...?

My first job at age 10 (1975), was sat'deh lad at a high st green grocers come butchers shop (ex Kerry's) in ruddington. For a twleve hour shift, i used to recieve a whopping £1.50.

My duties would include removing all gunky animal remains from the sausage maker, swabbing the decks, scrubbing the butcher's blocks till me little fingers bled and lifting bags of spuds around that weighed heavier than myself...!

As a treat on christmas, i was allowed to pluck 50 turkeys wi' me bare 'ands...!

  10. Some more tuffies i can remember whilst i'm having a flash-back...!!! (and who said e-numbers are bad for your memory?)

#Bazooka bubbly gum (in the long wrapper with a mini comic inside)

    #Sherbert pips

    #Milk teeth

#Sugar shrimps (the size of tiger prawns)

    #Fish & chips (crisps)

    #Tutti frutties

    #Rainbow kali (in a see-thru straw)

    #Mojos

    #Toffos

#Screwball (ice cream in a plaggy cone with a bubbly in the bottom)

    #Monkey nuts (teeth-shattering toffee)

Question: were curly wurly's a linear metre back then, or did i have increadibly small hands as a kid?

  11. Hi PJ.

I can remember Spanish Gold just as you described, When you had chewed all the sweet coating off it you were left with shredded white coconut, tasted nice though!

Can you remember those pink round bubbly gums that lost their taste after a few minutes, boy did they make my teeth ache, and Beechnut chewing gum with sugar coating (spearmint flavour) God I did put some muck in me mouth.

    Cheers

    Rog

    Aye up rog,

The bubble gum you're on about, i think was just called 'bubbly'? blue sweet wrapper, red writing yellow back ground.

They were lovely but you're right mate, taste-wise they were 'gone in 60 seconds'.

Beechnut chewy was nice by the way.

  12. Hi pj, I can't remember either of those, the only coconut sweets I remember were coconut mushrooms. Do you remember Horlicks tablets, came in a roll, and Victory V in the winter.
    Hi katy

Did the horlicks sweets come in a tube about half the size of a pack of polos? if they're the ones i'm thinking of, they used to go all warm and slimey when ya sucked 'em for a bit...!

    They were nice though.
