There was one of the "bomb site boys" quite well known in Basford, (that well known I've forgotten his name! Bob something or other, unusual surname too) am sure others will know of him, esp Craig Strongman, had various sites over the years plus a scrap yard at and behind the former five ways garage. But the "best" (some will say cheeky ist) was a guy living on the ring road in ex council semi with tarmac'd front garden, had various cars up for sale, sometimes 5 or 6 at a time c/w with proper dealers "One Owner" "Low Mileage" "P/E Welcome" etc plus price screen stickers on said tarmac and wide pavement outside! We used to joke re petrol pumps being installed and tyre fitting bay in his garage, needless to say didn't last long! but an interesting episode.

Bob Churchill was a well known bomb site boy in Basford...

  4. Bulwell Motor Company, Piccadilly Bulwell, now sadly gone. So has the Piccadilly Club to the left. Also had a petrol pump outside with an enormous hose to reach the road.

We finished a late shift on the buses & then into the club for a few beers !

I remember when one of Teds sons,Ross I think came to get fuel from our garage on St Albans Road (after they`d stopped selling) in his recovery truck...they used to do all the accidents recoverys for the Police...Whilst leaving the pump on autofill,I took a look in the wrecked car on the back to see to my horror a foot, still in the shoe that had been missed by the police and ambulance service...we quickly called 999 and they came very quickly to go and try and reunite it with it footless owner..

  5. Hello Ged Ling

I remember the Plains Motor Company, but weren't they along Mapperley Top near the Tree Tops (like you mentioned)? My memories of the old Sytner place are that it was on the site near the Plainsman pub (or whatever it may be called now). Unless I'm getting my garages mixed up

Before your time, Trevor Perkins was involved in a car business called Dean and Perkins (with a Mr Dean, can't remember the first name) and they were on the site at the top of Woodborough Road which is now occupied by Nottingham Autopark.

    Nigel Dean...

  6. Pidge Pie...yes, Terry Hill. I've been trying to remember the name and it wouldn't surface. Poor Neville Eccles, that's horrible. He was a quiet lad, like Winsome. Yes, it makes you think when you see your peers shuffling off and realise that you're probably well over half way through your time here. It's not morbid...it's all part of life's rich tapestry and hopefully it won't put Stephen Ford off his lunch!

Terry Hill was a small lad- quite wiry- but not wiry enough to avoid the train.

I've been looking at the photo of Mrs Price's class and there is Charles Haskey on the back row. I didn't remember the name until I looked.

I went to the Berridge Centenary in 1984. The old place looked very much the same as it did when we were there. My Mum went as well because she was educated at Berridge Road Schools. I hoped to see Mr Baugh but was told he had passed away a few years earlier. Pity, I'd have liked to meet him again.

I did a bit of research re Mr Baugh and discovered that he'd been put on a ship to Canada (on his own) at the age of nine, to go and live with his grandmother. Presumably, he lost his mother when he was a child. I never really knew much about him but he probably didn't have a very easy life either. When you are children and you (probably) don't like your teachers very much, you don't stop to think that they are human too and have experienced their share of highs and lows. That realisation only comes with age and life itself teaches those lessons.

Well...that's enough philosophising for one day.

Keep the memories coming, Pidge Pie.

Jack Baugh was the head when I was at Berridge...a lovely gent..I think he lived on Ribblesdale Road in Sherwood..he used to be my Grandad Harry Cranes best friend and golfing partner...Some of the names I remember were Mrs Parrott and Mr Anderson..I was at the school from 69 to 73..then went on to Peveril..we lived on Birkin Avenue on the corner of Randle Street..

  7. I worked for your grandfather from leaving school in 1955 he was a great boss He used to race speed boats at stoke bardolph and as a youngster we had to clean and polish the underneath of the hull to make it go faster I worked under Ray Rossling who was an incredible mechanic he would tackle anything he later went on to car sales for zipzer motors at trent bridge I saw motors Clarkson would die for your grandfather was rather portly a distinct disadvantage when it came to racing he once took me out sat on the side of the speed boat as they were only single seat I have never been so terrified in all my life how he got it turned round on the trent I cant imagine wonderful memories of the best job I ever had you must be vey proud of him

Sadly,I never met my Grandfather..he died before I was born..I have pictures of him on his boats..I will try and put them on for you..
