  1. reading a book at the moment called Londons Burning, its about the Auxiliary Fire Service, during the Blitz, and it got me remembering a great old film with Tommy Trinder in Called The Bells Go Down, would love to see that movie again, also trying to remember the actor who was Tommys Fire Chief in the film. As they say They definitely do not make em like that anymore, ps, Saturday matinee, Gene Autrey, smashing

Johnsons Precision Engineers on Huntington St. my first job upon leaving school, although it was 1960, lived at broxtowe so caught 62 or 30 bus at Denton Green to city then walked St. James St. Market sq. Queen st. Trinity walk across the square to Victoria Station, (pausiing to check what was on at the Mechanics Cinema then across the Steel Bridge onto Glasshouse St. and round the corner into Johnsons. Now i havent thought of that walk for over 53 years, going to retrace me steps this summer, although i will have a bit of trouble with Mechanics cinema and the steel bridge. seem to remember seeing my first street busker on that bridge and when a train was leaving the statioin lovely smell of smoke and metal from the station. just remembered, foreman, on me first day sent me to the stores for a long weight, (wait), me dim, sat outside the stores for 2 hours, like i said, dim

  3. dad lived at 21 Ramsey St. Carrington, mum, before they were married lived two doors further up, Grandads Wesleyan Chapel was up Wesley ST., if you go up there now, the bit thats left, there is a sewer grate in the road, that was in front of where the chapel stood, next door to 21 there lived a family called Bearsdley, dads best pal was sonny beardsley, he was killed parachuting at Arnhem during the war. there was a pub at the bottom of Ramsey St./Babbington St. called The White Hart, known locally as The Glue Pot, because the wives used to say once the men get in there they stick in there and won't come out. i remember bonfires in the middle of the street, washing hanging out across Babbington St. (big Sheets), and illegal betting being done between the washing.

  4. thinking back to missed dates with girls, not able to inform parents where you were, finding out where your pals had got to whats on with lessons etc. at school. if there was one item i wish was available back fifty years ago it would be the mobile phone, i think an awful lot of peoples lives would have been a lot different
