  1. mention of the bus service in the 50s/60s 18, 17, 6 - i caught a 56 or 60 from wigman road back then, my grandma lived at carrington, Babworth St. i would be about 6 or 7 years old and mam said to get to grans get the bus to town then walk to the lions in the square, go up queens st. cross the road up gitty, ( Trinity Walk), we didn't know the name then, to the top and get an 18, 17 or 6. i would get on the 56/60 at the corner of Wigman Road, Bracedbridge Drive and all the way to Trinity Sq would recite out loud 18, 17 or 6. must have looked a right twit, still do. miss me gran though, took dad to Carrington, just before he passed, it was all gone flattened with a school there, but as we walked around there was a grated gutter at side of the kerb, still there now, and from that and the distance to Hucknall Rd he worked out that the grate was situated outside the house that was next door to his, (grans) house, The house next door was were, as a kid, his best mate, Sonny Beardsley, lived, he was killed at arnhem, as a para. in operation Market Garden. I think he was very happy with that visit, we also visited the Gladstone pub just up the road, he said it was where his pop used to take him, as a lad. in my mind i can still walk through grans house and often, as today, recite, 18, 17 or 6 out loud, still look like a twit.

  2. DavidW #17, just watching your movie clip, see the pillars being built for vic centre car park, my father was a shuttering joiner on that site, remember calling to him whilst he was working there that my son, his first grandson had just been born, can see him now walking back to his work punching the air, thank you for the view

  3. catfan #21, just read your ladies parents live in Bilsthorpe, my mother came from there, i do not know the place very well but dad told me a bit about the place, mum came from a place called The Bungalows, this was in the 1920s, wonder if they know any of the history of the place, do not bother them about it too much, wonder if they have knowledge of Bilsthorpe pit, moms dad worked there, think he was killed in a pitfall. dont wish to be a pest, but would be grateful, mum never spoke of her time as a child there. all the best.

  4. i remember one day, i was about 13 yrs, me and a pal David Soul cycled from Bilborough to Matlock, took us about 3 hours, after looking round matlock bath we got to Cromford and walked the bikes up that big hill toward Worksworth cycled on till we got to Duffield, this was about 01:30 am David could not go on any longer, we were lost frightened and had no money, A policeman phoned Davids dad after he saw us sitting against a wall, his dad picked up my dad and following what the policeman had told him where we were they came to collect us, the policeman knocked up a woman who lived in a house opposite the phone box, Dad said he was really proud of me for not leaving David, then clipped me round the earhole for fetching him out. Next day dad and Davids dad got the bus to derby then to Duffield collected our bikes and rode home, now my dad had not ridden a bike for about 30 years so when he got home he was a bit wobbly and knackered for about three days, more clips round earhole. God i miss those fantastic days.
