  1. does anyone remember boris ? i was going through some papers and found this

This is the story of a lad called Boris , sometimes known as Chris

Iv,e known this chap for fifty years his name is Christopher Smith

His grandma brought this lad up , down there in Albert Street

He played with all the other kids, a very nice chap to meet

When this chap was seventeen his grandma passed away

This left Crisall on his ownand nowhere else to stay

Thats when he turned to sleeping rough

And life for him was very tough

Chris is now turned fifty four still living all alone

Hes sleeping rough up Bulwell woodshe hasn,t got no home

So when you see this chap around dont just give a sigh

Just thinkto yourself thank god it isn,t i

Dont look down as you pass him by in dear old Bulwell streets

Just give the lad some money so that he can sometimes eat

  2. sorry this is abit of a delayed answer but ive only just found tis site, there was also ray wells laurence osborne alan fields david lancaster geof gould , they all lived round that area . didnt the greaves family live the other side of the entry to your dad?

  3. the small stream was faireholme brook[ if thats how you spell it] spent many happy hours there picnicking with a lot of relatives when i was small. one big happy faily , no cars then the adults used to carry all the picnis basketsand we,d walk from the meadows , over the toll bridge through the churchyard by the trent to clifton grove . kids wouldnt walk that far nowadays , dont think the parents would either.

  4. talking about the toll bridge , i had an accident in 1954 on brickyard bridge ruddington?ran into the back of a stationary car, on my bike , not looking where i was going , looking at my boyfriend instead , silly me . anyway the police came and decided it would be quicker in the police car , so with flashing lights and sirens we approached the bridge from the wilford side and there stood ivy and her mam standing in the middle of the road expecting the car to stop and pay the halfpennythey didnt of course . and when we looked round she was shaking her fist at us

  5. i remember mondays as being wash day my mum bent over the dollytub twisting the dolly peg to get the washing clean whites went in first then all the others. stew and rice pudding for dinner it was the easiest , just put them in the oven whilst she got on with the washing , i also remember newspaper on the table while the table cloth was being washed [ im sure we had more than one tho]

  6. I remember the 1947 floods very well , Iwas 9 yrs old at the time. the water just came up to our front doorstep but further down the crescent it came into the houses, midland crescent that was. my cousin , uncle and aunt had to come and live with us , they lived on castleton street and the water came up above thier fireplace, as kids you dont think of the dangers but it must have been terrible . i remember the tractors touring the streets passing bread and milk in baskets up to bedroom windows on ropes and fishing with string on a stick out of the window

  7. i can remember standing where the photo was taken just as the water reached the top of the wall , we hurried down briar street and got to the pillarbox on kingsmeadow rd as it came swirling round hawthorn st, we made a run for it as we,d got to get to midland cres next to the rof , it was frightening how quick it came up
