  1. I knew a Philip Kirby he lived in the entry that ran from ryland cresent onto wilford cresent west sorry iforget what it was called i knew him in the seventies i guess he would be about 60 or there abouts now. good luck in your search .

I thought i would list some of my customers when i was a kid to see if anyone remembers them Bens book shop/ was a record shop next to bridgeway hall on arkwright st .i used to fetch his sarnies he paid me with handful of pennies from the till. A bit further along just past andy bones bike shop was Mr Palmers i cant remember what he sold but iused to wash his car.further along stillwas Stoppards pawn brokers i used to mop the floors and help serve in the shop i also washed his car at both shops the other shop was on st annswell rd next to stoppards was a tool shop was a cheese shop again icleaned his car and served in the shop worked there abit when i left school. anyway they where my customers in that bit of the meadows. Inbetween those shops was lyons sweet shop where ispent my money she sold chocolates that had been in the window and turned white they tasted ok and you got alot foryour money ..

  3. mick to me nice telephone scam wish id thought of it .there was a kathrine carol and josie cooksey i think also a post from acooksey under Heasons.Micheal booth you reminded me of a time we approached someone visiting the poets corner and asked him if he wanted his car washing we agreed a price and set about cleaning his car it was an ugly looking forign car with running boards on both sides istepped onto one to wash the roof nnd it fell onto the floor needless to say i did not hang around to get paid.

ALSO SELLING FREE FOOTBALL FIXTURES THAT SKETCHLLEY CLEANERS PRODUCED. WE WOULD GO INTO TOWN TO THE BIG COOP I WOULD SPIN THE REVOLVING DOORS MY MATE RICHARD COOKSEY WOULD SPILL OUT ONTO THE PAVEMENT PRETENDING TO BE INJURED WE WERE ALWAYS OFFERED BUS FARE TO GET HIM HOME.ME MAM HAD KILLED ME IF SHE KNEW.SOMEONE WROTE OF ANOTHER SCAM WE USED THAT WAS SELLING MONEY OFF COUPONS TO SHOP KEEPERS.THERE USED TO BE A PLACE ON RYELAND CRESENT THAT GAVE US BROKEN POP AND BEER CRATES WHICH WE CHOPPED UP AND MADE FIREWOOD BALES THEY ALSO GAVE US SAWDUST WHICHALSO SOLD WELL.MY MONEY MAKING METHODS WERE ENDLESS.

  5. i worked for some meadows companys in the ealy seventies when jobs where plentyful. they included redgates pop gibsons hoisery on corner of willersley st. s and a removals other firms in meadows include hiltons plubing and heating . ialso worked for water board redifusion wigfalls allied carpets and many more .

  6. fill in or correct from heasons next street derwent st think cricketers onthe corner.continuing you passed some shops one being a barbers can anyone remember other shops the next st was blackstone st with a shop on the corner ithink just under railway bridge the next st was annersley st think pub on corner then queens drive. crossing over and heading back to arkwright st on the corner was cop shop behind which stood some sort of church hall where they had discos then came large entrnce into railway yard not sure if you could get through to Nixon Knowles timber yard . there then followed a row of houses down to railway bridge underwhich you would find Jack hardys bookies tiniest shop ever this was ithink on the corner of mayfield grove not sure if cinema was on opposite corner. then came an alleyway that went through toryland cresent the lawtons lived first house thencame more shops including another barbers then came bruce grove duncans food shop on one corner between bruce grove and the next rd which was wilford grove there was back entries. on the corner of wilford grove was rosses greengrocers on the other corner was the CO OP grocers with the CO OP butchers next door run by mick agreat bloke then followed some houses hogg the butchers stoodopposite jacks beer off cant remember this rd could have been agnes st between there and arkwright st you would have found tarries newsagent afishing tackle shop cant remember others when reaching arkwright st on the opposite corner stood bridgeway hall followed by duke of newcastle pub then bells china and hardwhare shop with acouplle of alleyways between

  7. during the war ryland cresent took a direct hit from german bomb my dads house was flattened my dad and his brothers where fighting abroad at the time and my grand parents where in the shelter one old chap ended up on a roof mutilated he had refused to go into a shelter.

Does anyone remember mr spungin he was a fine example of a teacher at that time.. he caned me everyday for not wearing my glasses national health specials. he also gave me plastic tokens for the bus fare to fetch packs of cigarettes whitch he sold to other teachers.needless to say igrew up to be a shortsighted agressive chainsmoker.The wonders of a working class education.

Talking of local nutters iremember a area in nottingham where you could leave your door open all day and all night that area was pretty peaceful generally and mostly kind and honest people lived there. then a bunch of nutters flattened it and replaced it with a ////hole called the new meadows

  12. these photos are brilliant for me because the one with the phone box is taken from willersley st looking down wilford grove with kirkwhite st immiediately crossing.i hts relevant to me because i was born on willersley st and lived on wilford grove until it was pulled down. our house on wilford grove would have been the first house after the ones remaining. the photo with the post box is the same area but taken from the other way up wilford grove just above ryland cresent opposite ryland cresent would have been kirkby street.
