  1. When we moved from Hyson Green to Wilford in the late 50's, I used to travel from Wilford to the Windley School on Forest road - on my own - on the bus. On my way home, I used to "drop off" the 43 trolleybus as it slowed down for the junction in the overhead outside Brurton's where the 40 and 47 turned off to go dowm Greyfriar gate to Wilford Road. I used to hit the ground running, slowed down and dived down Broadmarsh to get the 14 to Ruddington. I only recall coming a cropper and going ar$e over tip about twice................
  2. When I moved out to Derbyshire, some 20-odd years ago, our local hardware store in Codnor sold it from a tank in the basement. You brought your own can and it was reasonably cheap. Nowadays, you buy pre-packed stuff which costa an arm and a leg, or a bottle (!) of "lamp oil" which is the same stuff with a pretty scent!
  3. Well, you asked for it..................
  4. That was where the tobacco waste was processed. There wasn't a lot, as anything that could be reused, was, but dust (vacuumed off the roof trusses) and stalk couldn't be used, so were sent here to get the duty back and were then destroyed.
  5. The other pub that kept distictly odd hours was the one in the Cattle Market which did (and for all I know may still) open at some ungodly hour in the morning and closed aropund lunchtime 'cos the farmers had all gone home by then! I'm fairly certain it didn't open in the evening..............
  6. No - one of them IS Dave Needham!
  7. Yes - we do have that in Derbyshire, you know................ AS an aside, in my first job I actually got a Power Samas punched card sorting machine to function and sort the cards - never found out what it was used for, though..........
  8. Would these be lace machines, reading punched cards (rather like a Jaquard loom)?
  9. Parts were filmed in Bulwell - the house which was featured still stands. The "dropping off the trolleybus" shot was taken as the bus came DOWN Derby Road, outside what was Pullman's the Furnishers.
  10. Is it by any chance Redhill, north of Arnold? It's the only place I can think of with a bridge over a road like that...................
  11. That's a bridge in the Arboretum - I used to walk under it when I were a lad!
  12. Of course, it all depends on what you mean by "last trolleybus"! I know 506 did the official bit, but for most of us the REAL last trolleybus was the tour which followed the last service vehicle, the night before. I was on this and was able to stand in the middle of the road as the photographers took their pictures - something I would NEVER dream of doing now! I do remember that when we eventually got back to the depot, we "performed" for Radio Nottingham in the shape of a youthful Dennis McCarthy! When 506 had dischaged its distinguished passengers, she was driven back to Parliament Street b
