  1. I remember going to the Highfields "Lido" a lot, i remember one stinking Hot summer, I think it was 1969, because Middle Of The road's "Chirpy Chirpy Cheap, Cheap" seemed to be blasting from every, transistor radio, the place was jam packed, i remember the hot drink machine, the first i had ever seen as a kid, gave nice hot chocolate, or soup if you wanted it. I think i got sun stroke the same year rowing on the lake with my dad

  2. Yes Sheridan, I remember the shop and can still see it in my minds eye.

It was on the right going towards Trent Bridge. It had a large 'Durex' sign in the front window which might even have been neon?

As kids walking past to School we knew the name but did not know what the product was?

Haha here in Australia Durex means "Selotape"

  3. I remember a little old Fashioned bakery, was it "Jewels" or "Duvals" something like that it was near my Gand parents place in Arkwight street, for Birthday Parties my Gran would bring 1d Rolls, tiny little bread rolls and Mam would put "Potted Meat" on them

  4. Not one building, but a group of them.

Drury Hill. Went up and down there hundreds of times when it existed, getting to and from Broad Marsh bus station.

I remember in the last days of Drury Hill a couple of young guys opened a really "Modern" book shop called "B U X" it smelled really new, lovely fresh carpet white walls and chock full of fresh smelling penguins (books that is)

  5. I Remember the wonderful sweeping staircase with the Black "Vitrolite" glass walls, and the Restaurant with the fountain on the top floor, which had a sort of mezzanine level obove, what happened to it? (apologies if this has been discussed before, I'm a newbie) and now live in Australia since 1974

  6. I attended one term sept 70 - July 71 and was in the Frank Wittle House, which had the trendiest colour "purple" they had a seven day timetable that was totaly confusing! and the "Midland Maths Experiment" which has left me " Numerically Dyslexic" there was a very nasty piece of work in the form of a religious Knowledge teacher by the name of Naylor?

  7. My Granddad had an old fashioned barbers shop in Arkwright Street, close to the Portland Swimming baths, i remember visiting with my dad after we had been swimming on sunday mornings and he would be cutting the hair of his friends.

  8. I was there at Ellis Guildford from 1971-73, I remember a lot of the teachers they were all a bit eccentric, Mr Barks was the Maths teacher he was a bit Of a " Paper Tiger" my dad knew him and we went to his house once and he was charming! they used to call him "Fred Boots" cos he had squeaky shoes!!! he was my form teacher and my maths teacher, I was & still am dyslexic when it comes to numbers, He couldn't understand why I was bottom of the class in maths and 1st or second in all other subjects!!then there was Miss Bryan, who was very nice, but very 1940's in her dress sense she was relatively young but wore tweeds and twinset and pearls, Mr Stuart/Stewart was the English teacher, he was very camp, bit could fly into ( i suspect) act of rage, if the kids played up, there was "Dotty" miss Rudd who was like something out of ST Trinnians, I think she was the Cooking teacher she was in her 60's and had long white hair in two plaits i remember two teachers died whilst I was there, there was an elderly metalwork teacher, who got into a heated argument with a skinhead pupil, and had a heart attack at lunch time! and there was another teacher very scary I think his name was Mr Kendall, and a bit of a bully, although i suspect they had to be like that to control the kids, who even back in 1973 were way out of control, he died of a heart attack he would have only been in his early 40's

  9. Thanks for your welcome, I now live in Perth, Western Australia, which was a lovely colonial city back in the early 1970's, sadly the mining boom of the 80's saw the tearing down of many fine buildings of the late 19th century, consequently they can't get it right and keep tearing down and replacing every 20 years or so. I hope to be in town for a weekend towards the end of August so hopefully the weather should be ok, and it will be light till quite late so i will be able to get out and about, I don't drive anymore due to poor eyesight, and hope to go on a few day trips via coach to places such as Chatsworth House. I really want to do a tour of Council House if possible?
