I can't remember if I mentioned this before but when I was a school kid, one of the old design pre-fabs on Beechdale Road near Bathurst Drive had miniature models of Wollaton Hall, the Council House and other famous local buildings in the front garden. Can anyone else remember them and what happened to them? Were they still there when the prefabs were re-built?

Ian, I used to think things were done for the good of the people. Then I think of what happened to Nottingham Victoria Station and the GCR, and here they are now wanting to build another one. I don't think for one minute it will be for us. I smell a nice little earner here for one or two politicians.
I must say I am biased. A lot of people think industry was mucky and ugly. I just loved all that muck and ugliness.

In one of the local transport publications it quotes an elderly man (of the time it was printed maybe in the late 70s, who told of his childhood watching them build the railway, and later of his ability of being able to travel to almost anywhere in the country, then of seeing it closed and destroyed. All in one man's lifetime.

By the way. The Broad Marsh Centre does not extend that far. The area in the photograph is near the rear of the Loggerheads pub.

Long Stairs shown on the photograph on #8 are very old so that must be the original cliff. I read somewhere that the stairs are that way round because any invaders would have their shield in their left hand thus making it difficult to protect themselves. I don't know why Malin Hill is closed off.

Radford and Wollaton pits were linked underground as they were both once owned by Grove Estates.
I don't think Newcastle Colliery was linked to Radford and Wollaton. Newcastle, Babbington (Cinderhill), Bulwell, Broxtowe and Kimberely were all originally owned by Thomas North and all except Bulwell were linked overground by a private railway.

Definitely Soloman's Seal. I have some. They are very nice and are easy to grow but you need to stop them invading.

If you find the existing footpath called Malin Hill, it is an ancient route which clings to the side of the cliff above Red Lion Street and the Loggerheads. Another ancient route can still be seen if you look over the wall. Long stairs has been closed off for years, probably for safety reasons.

The Great Central Railway was the HS2 of its day, The London extension was brought about by a man with vision - Edward Watkins. He saw trains of the future travelling from Liverpool and Manchester through the Channel Tunnel to Paris. It was built to the larger continental loading gauge with small gradients and gentle curves. Nottingham Victoria station was a majestic cathedral of a station. Projected to cost around 400 thousand pounds to build it ended up costing a million. But what a beautiful place. For our family it was the preferred way to travel to London, even though my grandfather drove trains on the Midland. I absolutely adored being on the platform at Victoria, just soaking up the atmosphere, some of my visits being with fellow Nottstalgian - Firbeck.
Sadly, this futuristic railway was sabotaged by people who should have known better. A very expensive railway put to waste, which is probably what will happen to HS2 if it is built.

Like Michael and Blondie I love them all. I am at present trying to make displays of Alpines in old sinks. My favourites here are the multitudes aof different Saxifrages, Sedums and Sempervivums. In the greenhouse are trays of bedding plants which will be in containers all over the garden by the end of May. In the shallow rockery facing the conservatory are the more invasive Alpines such as Cerastium (Snow in Summer), Aubretia and Eidelweiss.
When I asked my wife what was her favourite flower she said Peonies (!!??).

Joy probably had different childhood to many. If you read both of her books you will find them quite funny.
