  1. I saw that one Michael. I remember one roadshow in which a young lass brought loads of pre-war railway travel posters she found in her grand fathers attic (or somewhere like that. She had about fifteen and I can't remember the exact valuation but I think it was something like 3 grand for the ordinary ones and 5 grand for the ones with famous engines depicted. Anyway, it came to a tidy sum. Her parting shot? 'I've got another fifty or so at home'.

There was lots of stuff around in the sixties. When my grandfather (steam loco driver at 16a) refused to learn diesels at the age of 62, he was given the job of collating and cleaning all the lamps, signs, signals etc taken from closed railway locations. It was stored in a warehouse at Derby and sold at auctions (before Collector's Corner came into being). I still have the LMS stack barrow he bought. He had a beautiful MR station seat from Beeston Station, but after he died, my gran allowed it to rot.

If you want to talk about railway artifacts, have a chat to Firbeck.

  2. It's easy to moan about the weather. But remember this. We live in a small island sandwiched between the weather systems brought about by the Atlantic Ocean and the freezing cold systems which waft in from Siberia, not to mention the varied systems from south Europe. Not forgetting the ever changing jet stream. Most of the time we seldom get really bad extremes (like huge tornados or months of crippling frost), and when we do it's something to marvel at. We have some of the most fertile green scenery in the world and despite the variations in the weather, I love it. And like everyone else here, I am a true Brit so I moan about the weather. It's what we do.

  3. We had a Co-op grocery van used to call on Wigman Road in the 50s and early 60s. The delivery man was called Ted and he always drove that van in reverse. He would stop every hundred yards or so, jump out, cup his hands to his mouth and shout 'Helloooooooo'. Years later in the mid 70s, I did a stint on the milk rounds starting at Beechdale depot. I met him there - he was a milk-roundsman by then. We als0 had milk deliveries daily, mostly Co-op, but also a little lady from Northern Dairies who also used to drive the vehicle in reverse. The co-op baker used to compete with the 'Bakers Boy' who came in a blue van carrying his bread up the green in huge baskets.

  4. I've read all your comments but I am not in favour of mass immigration. It is not about what they contribute . How many times do we have to point out that this country is rapidly getting very overpopulated and we cannot keep letting people in no matter who they are. Africans and Asians tend to have too many children which is bad news. Also there are too many criminals coming here. Most British people do not want to belong to a different culture but that is how it is getting. And sorry DJ. I disagree about our people not wanting to work. I work in many different places and see heck of a lot of British People working very hard in thankless jobs such as care homes. Like most people, I feel sorry for them but this country many years ago had repressive regimes even Fundamental Christians which was nearly as bad as Isis, but over the years the common man stood up to it. They really must do the same. I know it's hard, but overpopulating other countries really is not the answer.
