    Nottingham Forest Football Club was founded in 1865 by a group of shinty players and were known as Nottingham Forest Football and Bandy Club. Their home was the Forest Recreation Ground which was a racecourse from the late 17th late century until the late 19th century.

    The comic character, Desperate Dan, was created by Nottingham artist Dudley Dexter Watkins.

    In 1855 A man sold his wife, for one shilling and a pint of ale, in St. Peter’s Square.

    When Nottingham Castle was burnt down in 1831, the Duke Of Newcastle received compensation of £21,000.

    On January 31st 1968, BBC Radio Nottingham went on air for the first time

    In 1908, Nottingham’s first public telephone box was installed in Theatre Square.

    Chris Gascoine, who plays Peter Barlow in the TV soap Coronation Street, was born in Huthwaite.

    Actor and comedian Norman Pace (Hale & Pace) grew up in Newark.

    HP Sauce was invented by a grocer named Frederick Gibson Garton of Basford.

  21. Forgotten Comedians

    The thread prompted me to sort through some of my old books and I came across one from 1980 called “Who’s Who On Television”. In it were numerous comedians including probably lesser known ones and some who I can’t recall. My apologies if some of these have already been mentioned

    Stan Boardman – Colin Crompton – Alton Douglas – Mick Miller

    Others included Janet Brown – Jasper Carrott – Frank Carson – Charlie Drake – Cyril Fletcher – Larry Grayson – Dickie Henderson – Benny Hill – Frankie Howard – Roy Hudd – Jimmy Jewell – Don Maclean – Cardew Robinson – Terry Scott and Harry Worth.
