  1. Not sure whether I'm posting this in the right place ( knowing me, probably not!) I've recently discovered that my gran worked for a short time at the munitions factory at the bottom of Aspley Lane during WW2. This surprised me as it's not the sort of work I would have imagined her doing as she was a seamstress! Anyway, I digress! Does anyone have any information about the factory please? Even if only the name to start me off on my research.Fingers crossed & thank you.

  2. Standhill Road Infants. Miss Clarke-Goddard ( didn't she have a dog that she used to take to school with her?) Miss Freestone (sp) was my first teacher .. I liked her that much that I refused to move up a class and kept going back to hers! Miss Moon was the second year teacher. I've got a vague recollection of writing on a slate in the first year ..... I could be wrong!

  3. Still locked out of things like First School, which doesn't appear to have a limit on it ( some of the recent posts have less than 30 posts). As I said on an earlier post, out of 15 topics which I tried, I am locked out of 7. If I can't add comment to topics what's the point of staying?

  4. Hi all... Sorry I haven't been on long enough to post anything in the last few days.We know someone who thinks he knows where John Street was, he's checking for us. Hopefully we'll know something by the end of next week.

Yes Babs, I'm Jane & I did go to Carlton Girls in the dim & distant past!

  5. Hi Carni ... it's not very clear as i had to downsize it quite a bit. It's Mr Duke. I got the original information off Ancestry when I was looking for a relative in Netherfield & decided to have a browse through the area. It's a place we'd never heard of, and it's position on the census it can be anywhere from Curzon St, down to London North Western Terrace.

  6. Certainly rolls back the years! We used to go drinking with Pete Rippon, Your brother John is still one of our 'best' friends ( if you can still have them at our age!) We remember your mum & dad ( Grace & Horace (?) ) from Cavendish Road. We took John home and got him back in safely more than a few times! Do you remember Dave Baker from Cavendish Rd?

Jill's husband is Terry, they're still together & are on Chandos Street.Ian remembers some of the names you've listed. We're on Coningswath Rd

  7. Hi Babs, Thanks for the information ....we're wondering now whether it was further into Netherfield & we're looking round the wrong streets. Even so, we can't place it. Husband ( Ian Hand) lived on Hodgkinson St., until we got married in 1970, then we moved round a few streets in Netherfield ( Manvers, Dunstan & Curzon) until we moved to Carlton ( where I'm from) in 1980. He knows Sheila, they were at school together.

  8. Hi everyone, thank you for the welcomes!

Hi Cliff Ton! Thank you for looking. It is John St, Netherfield according to the 1911 census. I can remember all the bottom terraces as husband lived in Netherfield, but neither of us can recall this particular street. It possibly disappeared long before the terraces were demolished. Unfortunately any of the family who would remember have long gone!
