  1. My first pub drink would have been at the Nags Head on Carlton hill,my parents house was near to the pub (a row of four old houses, now demolished )anyway they wouldn't believe I was old enough so. I said ask my Dad then, and they did....But before I was old enough dad would take us to the lord nelson in burton Joyce ,he would bring a tray of drinks to the car and treat me to a cherry brandy.

This is how I used to make it.....soak ham hock overnight in cold water, soak dried peas overnight as well.

Next day ,rinse ham, place in a large pan and bring to the boil, then turn heat down and simmer about two hrs.Take hock out of pan(save the stock)strip all the meat from the bone. Now put the rinsed peas, ham,an onion, couple of carrots.Simmer till peas are soft and mushy and the stock has reduced by about half.Do not add salt, there will still be a bit remaining in the stock, you can add pepper if liked.i never used green colouring. Some like a couple of potatoes added with the carrots(it thickens it a bit) ...and that's it ,it takes quite a while to make, but you can freeze any left overs. My husband used to like brown sauce stirred into it.

  3. What peed me off on Thursday ,waiting around in opticians(Boots) 3hrs being tested on different machines, then they put wrong address on prescription.Had to go back next day and wait about another 3hrs to get it changed and be subjected to high pressure sales talk, the woman gave in eventually when she knew I wasn't interested. All I wanted was a decent pair of glasses.I will stick to my old opticians in future.

  4. Its about 400 years since Shakespeare died ,not everything is known about him..no real birthdate just a date when he was baptised. There was no one to carry on the family,he had 3 children and one grand daughter who died childless.

But he did write good plays. Many quotes and phrases of his we still use.

  5. Shops selling hot faggots and gravy.,men wearing a trilby(my Dad always wore one) ,those footrest things they had in shoe shops, where you placed your foot to try on a shoe.,potatoes in hessian sacks in grocers shops, and some things like quavers that I saw demonstrated being cooked at an ideal homes exhibition in the old ice stadium,They looked like a box of cornflakes but when you chucked them in a chip pan they fluffed up (like quavers)I thought it was magic!but I was just a kid.Dad bought me some anyway.
