  1. I saw the request and have as far as possible I have avoided this, but I also expressed my opinion in that post (wherever that was).

Hitting the reply button to answer the last post is NOT the problem. It is hitting the reply button to answering the post 15 posts before, that is the problem.

Some responses can be from posts years old, because someone was just browsing and found something interesting to answer. Well, there is no point answering because the person who wrote the post will never know.

There is no continuous thread. The person you are responding to will never know you have responded unless he scrolls down a forum he answered 10 days ago and checks out his number of the post and reviews it so he can remember what he said.

A quote is notified to the original poster. Otherwise he never knows he had a response.

It's pure logic to be able to do this and one assumes that is why the feature is there.

It is untterly illogical tp provide such a feature and then complain whenever it is used.

    Solution:

Either remove it, or stop complaining, otherwise it will arise over and over again with new members, who don't know not to use the feature provided.

I have not been amember long, but have already found several "responses" by accident...where people has just hit the reply.

  2. My Saturday cinema was 2PM at the Apollo on Berridge Road, Forest Fields.
It was 6d . On more than one ocassion I got away with passing a off silver thruppenny bit.
I used to go with my old mate Robert Tate. We used to rifle through all the celluloid film that had been dumped in the bins.
I often wonder where he is now.

The cinema has met the same fate as the churches in the area. It is an Asian temple, of some sort, now.

  3. Tea cosies !

Boys burning the back of their hand, setting fire to paper (or extermnating ants) with a magnifying glass !

    Standard Ensigns

Germolene in yellow and blue tins.

    Salvolatile

    Liquorice powder

    Liqufruta

    Liquid paraffin

    Mad magazine

    The Topper

    Toby Twirl

MY FEET (At least I cannot see them without a mirror)

  4. Quite a few famous quotes here, that never happened:

"Not a lot of people know that"

    "You dirty rat"

    "Play it again Sam"

Leastways, that's the claim. There as dozens of quotes by varuous actors, who deny ever saying them.

All of these apparently, were used by impressionists who created the line as a part of their act.

I remember Peter Sellars on th Parkinso show, many years ago, did his impression of Michael Caine, in which he said the following:

"D' you know... that man over there: killed 40 men, maybe more. Not a lot of people know that"

Since then the phrase has stuck.

  5. #2462 I don't think anyone finds it difficult, Michael Booth.

It just makes logical and comon sense to use a feature that is provided.

If it really does cause so much trouble, then it makes sense to just remove the feature.

It is currenlty the only way that a member can quickly see that he has had a response to a post, because he is notified.

If quoting is not used and just the #xxxx, there is no notification process, so a member has to browse through all of the posts to go find if anyone responded, even when he felt no need to return to that particular forum.

In fact I only found the answers to my question here, by pure chance

I have discovered responses that I did not know had been made, much later... and may not have ever found at all, from people just using the #xxxx

Using the #xxxx means the member also has to know the number of his own post in that forum.

I am not sure I understand how 'one line of text' takes up more space than 'one line of text', in a database.

It does not seem to make any difference in my product, but then my programmer may work very differently and with different tools.

I would have thought there are a lot more space taking things in these forums, than quoting.

Somehow I think my customers would not understand being requested not to use a useful feature in our software.

  6. I had a most strange experience in the Trinity Square cafe in the late 60's. Those who frequented it then would recall that it had a balcony section, above.

I was in there with the Mrs one Saturday, when I found myself looking at my reflection. (as all young men are inclined ).. BUT the reflection did not move as I did. After a few seconds I realised that I was actually looking up at the balcony. At which point I realised it wasn't me. By this time, the wife had also spotted me in the balcony. I have no idea why, but I just grabbed my jacket and fled, dragging the wife behind me.

I still cannot fathom what made me "up and run", but it was so eerie to encounter ones own doppelganger.

I had already been told by a cafe owner on Derby Road (opposite the Albert Hall) that I had an absolute double, who hailed from West Bridgford.

He had been calling me 'Paul' for several weeks, when I had to correct him and he could not believe that I was a different guy.

I have frequently met doubles, but it is so different when it is your own.

  7. Dare I ask without getting chided?

I stopped doing this after reading this remark a couple of weeks ago. I just don't know why.

    Why is quoting a problem?

It seems the only sensible way to directly respond to a comment. Otherwise the thread is lost.

Surely that's what it is there for! What happens to the site to cause a problem?

  8. Still have all mine: AF, Whits, BS, open-enders, combination, ring, box, sockets. And my bike spanners. I even bought brand new tools boxes for them. sadly; to sit in the garage dong nothing. I even have the hoist in place. One day I will find a project I can afford; before I am too senile. I hope. (I have all the metric, too.)

  9. Not all bank accounts are bad.

We have three Santander 123 ccounts, which costs £24 per year but earn 1% and 2% up to £3K and then earn 3% on balances between £3K and £20K. On top of that we earn between 1% and 3% on purchases on the card including petrol, food and clothes at a huge range of outlets (which is auto paid off each month, so no charges). Then we also get preferential rates on ISA's. All we have to do is put £500 per month in each account and have three direct debits, which also attract an earning. We use our RBS account to "pass round" the £500 per month. I thinks it must be the best current account around; especially if you have the capital to invest the maximum of £20K in three accounts between you. I have NEVER paid for a bank account for either personal or my business use and never will. The banks make enough out of us as can be seen by how the 123 account pays out ! I also manage all banking on-line now, so I can see, very quickly, if anything is amiss. It took years to pick up the courage to bank on-line, but it is second nature, now.
