  1. Alison,

Thank you. I was brought up on Woolmer Road and often went to the library. It has recently been refurbished and I had a nosey in

last year as they had a lot of old photograhs of what it was like years ago. Across the road was old Dr Coopers surgery ( the surgery

    is still in use )

    Kind regards

A lovely old photograph. That is St Georges Church and it is still there and open. I had a potter round there last year to have a look

round but the church was not open. My grandad was president of the Royal British legion-the buliding was on Queens Drive and each

year the 'Remembrance day service' was held at the church after the service on the embankment.

    Kind regards

  3. As a teenager still at TB school I would often go to the General Cathcart ( on Cathcart street ) to see my mates Don and Malc Theakstone.

TheTheakstones owned the pub. For those who recall Arthur and Rob Clarke from TB school- they lived on Alison Rise, just off Alfred Street North.

For those who can remember Malc Theakstone I noticed his wife Gina very sadly died last year.

    Kind regards

  4. Mick,

You are correct. The entrance to Collingham footway is still there ( top of Woolmer Road )

When you entered you walked the length of the houses and the 'footway' opened up. Once through on the right was a fish and chip shop and then the school, further down on the right hand side. I think once you had walked through you came in to Ryeland Crescent.

I walked by there the other day.

    Kind regards

  5. Not only was there a Mabel Player ward-which was a female surgical ward but also Mable Player operating theatres.

There used to be a plaque -I'm sure Mable Player was related to W G Player ( ciggys ) who had a medical ward named after him.

The 'ward' lives on at Links Bar Hospital at Gamston.

    Kind regards

I worked at NGH leaving in the mid 70s. I have to say I am unable to recall a large painting that you describe in the OPD.

When the General finally closed many of the paintings were put up in the original main building-now home to the Health Authority.

Some were sold off and possible some found 'homes' around Nottingham.

The main archives for the old General are at the Archive library on Lenton Lane ( University of Nottingham)

You can actually search the web site to see what is deposited there.

    Kind regards

  7. Mapperley Hospital closed down in 1994. I worked there for two years doing psychiatry. St Anns Hospital at Thorneywood Mount has also closed but some mental health services are based there including child psychiatry.

Last February I visited the county archives to do some research on the old hospital.

The 'female' side of the hospital still exists but is now the mental health head quarters-( PCT ) and houses the teaching department. The 'male' side is flats. The old hospital chapel still exsists but deconsecrated. There is, where the old sports ground used to be, a new mental health unit-Wells Road Centre.

When the hospital closed some patients were transferred to Highbury Hospital. It was a very fascinating place in its hay day.

The records at the county archives were very interesting.

  8. Mick,

    Re Sante Fe Youth club

I think it first opened in 1962. I used to go to St Faiths Chuch and the vicar at that time- Revd Whalley was trying to encourage more young people to come to church. He decided to have the disco on a Sunday night at 7.30pm after the evening service. It did attract more young people to come to church albeit a rather mixed bunch which some

of the congregation complained about. So it was discontinued. I started to go to Sante Fe in 1963- the Theakstones, Tony Lander, Arthur Clarke etc would all meet up on a Thursday and Saturday evening. It opened at 7.30pm untill 9.30pm. As mentioned just soft drinks. Coca cola was 9 pence-good old money of course!. Had some very good groups on. Last went 1966.

Michael Clarke died as mentioned in 1963- Saturday Novemeber 22nd. I was with his brother Arthur when Mick and Sue left Sante Fe. Both died at NGH. We had two minutes silence at school on the Monday.

    Kind regards

  10. In 1964 I was in the fifth form undertaking GCE Art ( failed)

I remember quite well drawing a large picture of 'Nottinghamshire' and inserting pictures of for eg Wollaton Hall, Trent Bridge

to show and illustrate certain areas.Similat to the JS's map drawings. Mr Simons signed in J B Simons- had it for years before destroyed it.

I liked Mr Simons- lived at East Leake and had I think a small red care.

    Happy New year to all

    Kind regards

  11. The 'school' that you mention on Wilford Grove, by the library has just been demolished.

I can just recall that if you went through Collingham footway-top of Woolmer Rd ( Wilford Cres end) that on going through to ? Ryehill Terrace there was a school - very much like the one mentioned, on the right past a fish and chip shop.

There for years until the old Meadows was demolished.

    Kind regards,

    Tony

  12. Ashley/ Mick

    Thank you.

Ashley I was not at Mapperley in 1967 but I did go to some wild partys there when I was a student.

I walked round the 'old ' hospital some three years ago and took some photographs.

Mick there was some boys at TB that thought there was a major bone in a certain area !!

I agree NHS has gone down hill and would not wish to work again in the system.

I had many happy memories of the NHS in Nottm-it was really good then.

I thoroughly enjoyed working at NG hospital. A /E was very busy then but NOT the violence we see today. In my last years in London stabbings/shootings ten a penny. At the General in 18 months

of Casualty work I saw only one murder.

The hospital mortuary was in the Trent Wing. We sometims would go to see the post mortems. The police ones were really interesting. I think we has 6 special fridges for the police. They moved from I think ? was it Lean side Mortuary or something. Mick would know

    Interesting replies

    Kind regards

  13. I recently retired from the NHS after some thirty odd years mainly working in acute Accident / Emergency Departments where I was a Clinical director.

I actually started Nurse training at Nottingham in the late 60s/early 70s working at Mapperley/ City Hospital and finally after two and half years at the General I left for London.

I wondered if any one had any good memories ( or bad ) of the Nottingham Hospitals.

I was brought up on Woolmer Road in the Meadows and have very happy memories of my childhood.

Nice to have any stories or comments.

    Kind regards

    Tony
