  1. Elizabeth was riding in her Range Rover with Philip on their way to church when they coasted right through a red traffic light. Elizabeth didn't pass any comment, as there were no other cars around at the time but when Philip did it again  Elizabeth said: "Philip, that's the second red light you’ve driven through!" Philip looked puzzled. "Am I driving?" he said.

  2. Yes, I guess late 50s-early 60s wouldn't be too far short of the mark. I lived in Sandiacre at the time and I well remember Long Eaton as having a DC mains supply then. Many appliances in that period employed a transformer to provide the correct voltages - and, of course, transformers couldn't be used on DC mains. You need a changing magnetic field in the Primary winding of your transformer in order to induce a lower or higher voltage into the Secondary winding.  So transformers work with AC since the magnetic field is oscillating at 50 Hertz.   If you plug the transformer into a DC circuit, the magnetic field is a constant, after a short initial spike.  No oscillating magnetic field, no output voltage; in fact, it will most likely burn up! The answer in those days was to buy a DC to AC converter (which was a device containing valves!) As a previous post said, you could also get some appliances which were described as accepting a Universal power source - and these would operate on AC or DC mains.

  3. Just noticed this posting.

Someone mentioned the Trattoria Conti and referred to it as being on a first-floor location in Wheeler Gate - which indeed it was in its latter years. Originally though, it opened on  St. James' Street in 1967, where it was in the basement of the former Victorian music hall The Malt Cross. It was, I believe, re-named La Contessa in the early 70s. It was a lovely restaurant with excellent food and staff.

  4. Yup, Phil! I never heard Harry's band referred to as anything other than a trio. Don't know why. With Jyll ball it was actually a quintet, I guess!

I used to go regularly to the White Post Inn restaurant at Farnsfield and the Green Dragon to hear them. Made many good recordings too, which sadly got mislaid with the passage of time. - Pete

  5. Hello Malcolm,

I have just taken a look at your interesting website but I cannot recall having had the pleasure of meeting you. That's not to say our paths haven't crossed somewhere back in the annals time, of course but I left Nottinghamshire around the early 1970s and moved to Blandford Forum in Dorset, where my wife and I lived until November 2009. Following a rather nasty stroke, we moved back here to be nearer family - so I guess if we did know each other it would be pre-1972-ish. I used to record quite a bit of piano so I wonder is you knew Harry Brown (great jazz pianist) or perhaps Bob Hudson, who is still very much active? Warmest regards. Pete

  6. Thanks very much, Michael. I'm an ex-pat from Risley and my wife's from just outside the City (Nottingham). We moved to Dorset about thirty years ago then returned to Nottingham in 2009 to be closer to our family. This looks an interesting site and I look forward to making an occasional contribution.

    Best wishes - Pete
