  1. Don't worry about the lateness NewBasfordlad, or anyone else, it is the thought that counts. You were with us in "Spirit" weren't you? Ha! Ha!

In fact, I think that we should do this toast thing once a month, a communal "Toast" to us all. What does everyone think? Maybe the first or the last day of the month? Put your thoughts or suggestions here please?

We have some more good news about our Son, he received a letter yesterday to say that he had been awarded PIP. It means that he will be able to get more Support Hours from the Team that is being put together by his Support Worker, which will help us too. When we are no longer here or too old & frail to look out for him & his needs in the future (a long time away we hope, but just in case), he has that back up so that he has someone to turn to & help him. Which is a whole load off our minds.

In relation to that too, I know that these official departments seem faceless & uncaring sometimes & get some bad press & lots of stick. But they have shown us nothing but kindness & respect & we Thank them. We realise that this is not everyone's experience in these matters, but I can only comment on ours. When my Husband rang to make the application, we were told that the appointment for an assessment alone would be at least 16 weeks away from them receiving & then processing the application form. Then weeks or months before a decision was made. With our Son in attendance to give his permission, the questions were answered. The form arrived a few days later which we had to fill in with the answers to even more questions. It took an entire day to complete. We took the form to his new GP for her to peruse & for the surgery to photocopy for their records & posted it that day. Within a couple of weeks he had his appointment date but we had to change it because he was working that day. We took him to be assessed & It took about 1 1/2 hrs - the Lady was very kind. She sent a report & it arrived 3 days later to the assessors. They telephoned about 4 days later to say he was highly likely to be awarded it & that he would receive a decision letter in about 3 - 5 working days. The award letter arrived in 5 working days. How efficient is that? From the first phone call to them until the receipt of the de ion letter, it took 9 wks & 6 days.

Sorry Robbie, I forgot to tell you about the PIP in my PM to you earlier, but I know that you will read it here & won't mind.

Thank you for taking the time to read my update.

  2. Dear Everyone,

Thank you once again, you are all wonderful.

We are going to raise a glass tonight at 8pm to "New Beginnings". Maybe you could all raise a glass with us at or near the same time, because it is through this site that has made it all possible & would not have happened without you. Robbie, the Whitaker's & yourselves - everyone has moved mountains to make it all possible.

  3. Hello Everyone,

Thank you to you all for your very kind & caring comments & well wishes, they mean everything to us. We cannot wait for our Son to read the latest ones from today? We know he will be very touched. You are all so very kind.

It is touching to read your words too Robbie about the fact that he is a "Gifted & Talented Horseman" & about how "His skills didn't go unnoticed by the Whitaker's". I know that I have told you before, but for those out there that read this. Our Son is 43 yrs of age & when he was a young boy was told by a Psychologist that he would never have a mental age of any more than a child of 8yrs of age. That he would never be able to live independently like a man or contribute to Society by getting a job & paying his own way through life.

We wish we could meet that man & show him what our Son has achieved in life & show him how wrong he was when he gave us his "expert" opinion. Our Son is a very kind, considerate & thoughtful person that would do anything for anybody. He has worked in full time paid employment since leaving school/college. Learned to drive a moped, motorbike, fork lift & tractor, taught himself fishing & teaches others, volunteers for a steam railway doing repairs etc. We know he is an asset to any employer, but he just needed a chance to prove himself. His & our wish has been granted. We are so proud of him that we are fit to burst. He cares for all animals, but as you all know, Horses are his passion & he can be trusted to give them his utmost care. But after he had been bullied, abused & put down by his previous employer he lost his trust & faith in people that he didn't know & his confidence also. Now all that has changed for him & the past doesn't matter anymore. The Whitaker's have trusted Robbie's word when he put him forward for the job & he will never let them down. He has followed their careers since a small boy & respects them greatly. They believed in him & gave him a chance to prove what he could do & he will repay that back many times over. He now has a fantastic new life with opportunities that none of us ever thought was possible. A miracle has been achieved.

His Passport is up to date already Robbie, we made sure it was ok & in date before our Friend/next door neighbour included it when she typed his CV so that the Whitaker's could see he was Legal & ready to travel at a moments notice - just in case it made a difference. It doesn't run out until the end of 2020. But you can be certain that I will be keeping tabs on the date well beforehand & make sure we renew it in plenty of time before the expiry date. Thank you for reminding me though. With so much to remember for him, it could so easily have slipped my mind. We do try to remember everything, but you never know, sometimes things can slip through the net. We have a file with all his important bits & bobs in & which we keep safe for him & a diary that I keep up to date too, for him & us. It is the only way I can keep on top of everything.

I probably shouldn't say this Robbie & you might tell me off because I know that you don't like to receive any credit for your Good Deeds. But you should. Maybe in the future one day you will go up to the Stables & meet him? He can then Thank you in person & shake your hand. Every time we see, speak or email, he tells us every time that after all that you have done for him, the least he can do is shake your hand &/or buy you a pint. He respects you so wouldn't hold you to anything. But he just wants you to know what an important part you have played in the change in his life. So there - you can tell me off now. Ha! Ha!

  4. Dear Everyone,

It is with great happiness & joy that we report some fantastic news to you.

After his work Trial, at last we can say that our Son has greatly impressed the Whitaker's in both that of his experience of "Working With Horses" & being a valued member of the Team that he has been working with since 24th July 2015. So much so, that he has been given a permanent job by them, which he is ecstatic about.

Today is the First Day in his new permanent position at the Whitaker's. He told us that he adores working there & that he even Loves the mucking out & that everyone treats him as an equal & with respect. It is such a friendly, relaxed & a happy sunshine place. He said everyone there is lovely & that if Heaven is working, then this is his Heaven. His dream has come True just like Robbie said it would do & the World is now definitely his Oyster. It is a Brand new beginning for him.

Monday 24th was the last day of his Trial Work Period & although he went to work with enthusiasm as he did every day there, it was tinged with a little sadness that this day may have been the last time that he was going to work there. Before he left work that night, the Head Groom said to him "See you Friday" (he had been working Friday, Sat, Sun & Monday), so he said OK. But he thought that because she said this every Monday since he had been there, that it was out of habit, not that they may be giving him a permanent job. So he didn't say anything about it just in case it would "upset the apple cart" if they hadn't made their minds up yet about keeping him on. Or maybe, he thought, they had just decided to extend his Trial Period & someone had forgotten to tell him.

We suggested he ask to clarify matters, but he didn't want to. He said that he would go in on Friday as usual unless they rang him to let him know that he wasn't needed. So I asked him if he wanted me to ask, but he said no. Again, not wanting me to upset the apple cart. We tried to tell him that whatever decision the Whitaker's made, it would not be influenced or changed by anyone asking them whether he was going to be taken on or not. But no, he still wouldn't change his mind. He was asked on Tuesday to go in for a few hours & work as they were short staffed, so he was excited & went willingly to help out. But still nothing was said to him.

Meanwhile, without him having knowledge of it, I was sent a message by Melissa Whitaker saying that they were more than happy with our Son's trial & that they would like to keep him on there. When I read that message I completely lost it & burst into floods of tears & couldn't speak with the relief of what this meant to him & all of us. Our Son has had his Dream come true, the World opened up to him, both his & our Faith in Humanity Restored Once Again & Robbie & the Whitaker's have done more for all of us as complete strangers to them, than anyone has ever done for us in our entire lives. What more can we say except a MASSIVE THANK YOU TO THEM ALL.

There are not enough words to describe our Happiness, Peace of Mind & Good Fortune. As Robbie said to me, we can relax now, knowing that our Son is alright. All I can say to you is that we can breathe easier & it is such a relief & Thanks to these 3 Guardian Angels. We can NEVER EVER THANK YOU ALL ENOUGH. There are not enough words. But, if there is ANYTHING that we can do for you in our own HUMBLE way, please ask & we will be there in a Heartbeat.

Thank you also to everyone that has supported us throughout our most terrible time. You have all kept us going & given us hope. Especially Robbie who started this journey & stayed with us throughout it, encouraging, guiding & even advising me by PM. Without his first message & suggestion about the Whitaker's, none of this would have happened. Our Son would still be in the Hell that he was in before I typed my appeal for help. The True Nottingham Spirit of you Nottstalgia People came through for us & we are so Very Grateful. We are so glad that I came across this site & joined up to be part of this great & special community.

Thank you - Our virtual Hugs go out to you all.

  5. Thank you for your lovely comments, good wishes & likes. I am beginning to mend & I need to take it as easy as I can for a while. but at least I can spend more time updating you all & reading your blogs too. Keep the comments coming please, it keeps up our spirits.

We have just received a message from our Son to say that he hasn't as yet been told that he has been offered a job, but he was told by a member of staff that they will "see him on Friday". So until he hears formerly that they are keeping him on, we don't feel that we can celebrate yet. But, in our heart of hearts, we are quietly confident that he will be offered a contract with the Whitaker's. Our Son is still not getting his hopes up until he hears officially, because he doesn't want to get his hopes dashed. But it certainly does seem like it, doesn't it? Surely, the member of staff wouldn't have made a mistake, would she?

Will keep you all updated as soon as we hear something.

Have a good evening all of you.

  6. Hello everyone,

So sorry that it has been such a long time since I posted a message. It seems that with all the worry & hard work, official appointments& the mileage that we had done over the course of 6 months sorting out things for our Son, that I had not been looking after myself too well & made myself very poorly. I was released from hospital today. I had to make sure that I was home for the last day of our Son's Trial at the Whitaker's. It wasn't confirmed to us whether it was a 4 wk trial or a calendar month & we didn't like to ask. As our Son said, it doesn't matter, because he'll enjoy the time however long it takes.

Well, our Son thinks that he's been in Heaven for the last 5 weeks & we all give our Thanks to everyone for their support, especially Robbie for getting him this chance, without him, this would not have been possible. Also of course, to the Whitaker's who took a big chance on their behalf to offer him the chance to change his life, which it has done. Whether it comes to anything or nothing, they have given him this chance, & for that we will be eternally grateful to them & Robbie.

We have our old Son back & he cannot stop smiling (nor can we) & he has gained all his confidence back. He gets on well with everyone & has been working very hard, he doesn't want to be away from there. He was taken to London to a Competition a couple of weeks ago & it took him days to calm down over his excitement from it all. Everyone has taken to him & we are hopeful of some good news when he gets home today, because today is one calendar month exactly since he started his trial. He Loves it there so much & he loves all the horses. But one in particular has stolen his Heart so much that every day without fail he has arrived at work 1/2 an hour before his due start time to give his favourite horse that extra special bit of attention & cuddles. The Whitaker's smile when they see him & they both thought that he would fall in Love with that particular horse when our Son met him. Everyone encourages him to give all the horses his attention & cuddles, which they cannot get enough of - both him & the horses. An extra Bonus is that it is helping him to grieve for the horse that he looked after & who died 2 yrs ago. He is allowing himself to Love & Live again, which, before starting there, wasn't something that he could ever forsee doing. How lovely is that? Some people will think this is silly, but unless one has ever owned & bonded with a pet however big or small. No-one can ever knock a Human Bond between man & Beast, it shows our Humanity, which is such a Very Special Thing to have & be a part of. We are so Very Proud of our boy.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will update you of any further news of his progress.

    Kind regards.

  7. Dear darkanza,

Thank you for your very kind words, they are comforting. How strange that your Daughter had her experience at the same yard as our Son will be at. We wish your Daughter every success & happiness in the career that she has chosen.

We will do our best to make sure that his current & soon to be ex-employer gets her come uppance as you say. We agree with you & that life is Karma (sorry if this is spelt wrong) & what goes round comes round. We will do our best & work with the authorities to make sure that the "powers that be" do stop her. People may wonder how she has got away with things for so long? She has been reported on a few occasions by people in the past, by both workers, & clients that have their horses liveried there, but somehow, she gets wind of it & covers her tracks. That is why I have to be very careful on what I put in my thread so that nothing alerts her. When owners of horses have found out how she behaves, they have removed their horses. She also claims to be something she isn't by false advertising. Clients pay for lessons from "qualified" staff. The actual people that give the lessons at this present moment in time are young girls that have no qualifications. If they refuse to give lessons, she sacks them. Then she gets other people to do it - but this must be stopped. I just wish that I could name & shame her at this moment in time, but we have to do it in a more sneaky way so that she doesn't get away with it again. Otherwise she will just get craftier & she will go under the radar again. Not long now, her cards are marked. We just feel sorry for everyone that is being used & that are innocent.

Best wishes to you & yours too.

  8. Dear hippo girl,

We can't do that, but we are sorely tempted. He hasn't resigned yet & we do not want her to get wind of what we are doing & put him in danger. Nor nor do we want her to get a tip off of what is to come or she will try & cover up. Some wheels are in motion & the cogs turning. Authorities know about what she has been up to & we have been informed that because he is classed as a vulnerable adult & what she has been doing is illegal (which we do know) that they are going to investigate her "activities". We want him out of there & for her to be investigated so it has to be kept secret. That is why no names have been mentioned. The authorities have assured us that nothing will commence until he is away from there. Even then, his details will be kept secret.

  9. Dear Mick,

Yes, he is looking forward to putting this terrible part of his life & that which will become his past, away where it belongs & is thrilled to be looking forward for once. There is light at the end of the tunnel that he's in - At Last.

  10. Dear Michael,

Thank you so much & yes we agree with you.

Our Son is looking forward to working in a better environment with people who will appreciate his skills & hard work with horses & not looked down on him because of his learning disability & what he can't do. He cares about people & animals & treats all with respect. He just wants the same back & cannot understand why his employer doesn't do that because he hasn't done anything wrong. He will be out of there very, very soon & I will post an update to let everyone know when he has left & how he gets on. He sends a big Thank you to all of you for your good wishes & for rooting for him. He said that he has never had strangers do this for him before. He is very appreciative of Robbie's efforts in getting him this chance too & I have sent him a private message of Thanks & appreciation too.

Last night when I told our Son that I had updated my blog/thread here on this site. He sent a message back & said "Have you sent a Special Thanks to Robbie as well as everyone else?". I told him yes. He said "Oh good".

We had the best nights sleep that we have had for years last night & it's all Thanks to the wonderful people that are here on Nottstalgia & part of what makes Nottingham what it is - Special.

Have a great day all of you.

  11. Dear All,

We have some wonderful news that we just had to share with you all - Our Son has been given a job by the Whitaker's. He will be on a one month trial until he proves himself (understandably). If he "does what it says on the tin", he will have a fantastic career opportunity which may open the world up to him & he would have the chance of maybe meeting new people & travel the world.

As you know, we went with our Son to meet the Whitaker's, they & all the staff are very happy there at their Stables & the atmosphere is bright & cheerful. The Horses & Stables are immaculately kept & we are thrilled & excited for him to have this chance to shine. They will look after him there Robbie says & we believe that because you can feel it. We can be sure that he will be so happy & when he heard that he was being offered employment, he was jumping with joy & cannot wait to start. He said that he will give the Whitaker's 110% loyalty, hard work, honesty & devotion to the horses, the Family & all his duties. A black cloud has been hanging over him (& us) for many years, but now he has got his life back & you can see the joy & brightness that is reflecting in his eyes again & we have our Son back again. Thank you so much for the Whitaker's giving our Son this chance to show what he can do. You have taken a chance on him & he will not let you down, we can promise that you will not regret employing him.

Also, we cannot say a big enough Thank You to Robbie for trusting what we said about our Son, enough to take the word of strangers (now friends) & to put in a good word with the Whitaker's. If it wasn't for you offering to do this for us & start the ball rolling Robbie, we would not now have our Son back again. Robbie has changed both our Son's life & that of us & our Family through giving many hours & weeks of his time, to hold us up when we thought that there was absolutely no hope of our Son getting another job. He has been there for us at the end of every message to give us hope, guidance & encouragement in his selfless way. You are a lovely man Robbie & your Family should be very proud of you - as are we. We Thank You so very much for everything that you have done for us & if anytime we can do anything at all to repay your kindness, please just say so & we will be there for you like you have been there for us. It may never be possible, but maybe one day you will let us meet you privately & shake your hand to say Thank You. Even though he has never met you, our Son says of you Robbie that he too wishes to shake your hand. But if that is not possible, he will still regard you as a Special Friend & that if it wasn't for you, he would be dreading going back to work when he's better. Now he says, "I have a future to look forward to, Thank you so much".

Also to everyone here on this Forum that have been so lovely in welcoming me to this site. Everyone's kindness is overwhelming (in a good way) & special. We can feel, everyone's warmth through your kind words of encouragement & support. Thank you.

Our Son will shortly be handing in his notice (we will be there to make sure his employer doesn't give him any grief) & to wipe the dreadful scowl off her face when she tries to put him down - which she will try to do because she can't help herself. She will no longer be able to bully him, we have promised him that. The only way is up now.

Sorry about another long thread. Happiness & good health to you all.

  12. Thought that you would like to know that our Son passed his CBT (Motorbike Test) yesterday - so proud of him. After this, he wants to get his Full Motorbike Licence.

The Test had been booked before his accident, but he didn't want it cancelled because of his accident. We were really worried whether he would get his helmet on without dislodging the break in his jaw - but he managed it because all the swelling has now gone down & he has a split face helmet. The leather protective wear was a challenge too because it is tight & scraped on the newly grown skin on his chest & arm. But he was determined to get it on & pass his test - & so he did.

He said his next thing to do when he's passed his full motorbike test, is to learn how to drive a Horse Box. I know that he'll do it. He's as determined & stubborn as I am. Ha! Ha!

When we Echo's get "the bit between our teeth", we don't let go, we see it through to the very end.

  13. Forest Road is at the top of the hill overlooking the Goose Fair site. You could see almost all of the Fair from this vantage point. There is a pub on the corner of Forest Rd & Waverley St - walk down a little & this is where the Arboretum begins. Burns St where we lived begins about 100 yards away down the hill from the Arborteum gates (not the main entrance on the corner towards town). People used to file past our house on the way to the fair all excited & squealing with delight. Then on the way back full of tales of what a good time they had had, what rides were best & had you screaming, Hands full of Candy Floss, Coconuts, Toffee Apples & even Bow & Arrows etc. These were rubbish & used to break when first used, they were as nearly as thin as Balsa Wood. I was a Tom Boy & my Brother's taught me how to make a brilliant one out of a tree branch.

The "Red Light" that was referred to earlier: I remember the red lights & the "Ladies" were very definitely "Ladies of the night". There were quite a few of them in the windows at that time. When I was an older teenager I asked one of the Policemen why they were allowed to ply their trade there, & one told me that for 3 Nights a year (Thurs, Fri, Sat then) they had better things to do (like catching Pick Pockets & Drunks & making sure that everyone had a good time & was safe at the fair, than to be arresting those "Ladies").

Does anyone remember the tiny little monkey (possibly a Spider Monkey) that I had a picture taken with, with two of my Brothers? The man & his monkey were there every year on the corner just down from Forest Grove & opposite the side entrance from the fair & where the main walkway entrance was (not the Mansfield Rd end). I know it is wrong now & wouldn't entertain such an idea, but I was only about 6yrs old at that time. It isn't allowed now anyway I wouldn't think, because it is cruel. I used to take my children to the fair when they were young in the late 1970's, but Thank Goodness it had stopped by then.

Haven't heard of the "man on the barrow". Are you sure he was alive & the eye & arm movements were not imagined to fill in your child memory to make the idea more comfortable to live with in your childhood mind? The Barrow sounds like an old Mortuary Barrow, where the Morticians used to wheel the body about on. They usually had a large pram looking wheel about 1/2 way down the length of it - just a thought. They had wheelchairs even all those years ago. After an accident, one of my Sister's had the unfortunate experience of being in a wheelchair for a time & could hardly move for months, but she was pushed around in a wheelchair. Wouldn't they have used one of those if he was alive? I think that it was most probably someone who had died & their last wish was to see the Goose Fair once again. So they sat him with his back against the wall to the Cemetary at the top of the hill so that he had his last wish fulfilled before burying him the next day possibly. If that is the case, how respectful of his loved ones to do that for him?

Maybe if some of the Gentleman's Family are still around, maybe they might remember & say why it was that they took him there. But I think whatever the story, it was a lovely thing to do for him - Alive or Dead.

  14. Good Morning Everyone,

Sorry that it has been a few days since my last message, but I thought that I would update you on how my Son faired yesterday with his meeting with the Whitaker's.

The meeting went very well. We were extremely proud of our Son & how he explained what his skills were, as we were all shown round the facility. We were put at our ease right away & didn't have Butterflies at all. We hardly slept the night before, because we knew how important this meeting was for him & we didn't want to let him down in any way by being nervous. We were welcomed as though we had been there many times & not just this first time. The staff were lovely & friendly too, which was alien to our Son because he has known mostly animosity where he works. Also, until he has met someone a couple of times & they are used to him, he can be very quiet & doesn't always show himself off in the best light. But within a minute or so they were getting on rather well & he was quite eloquent in his communication about his equine skills.

Our Son went dressed equipped & ready to ride & to show the Whitaker's what he could do, but after reading his CV, he was told that there was no need.

Because of my health & limited Mobility, my Husband & I couldn't keep up & said for them to go ahead & we would catch them on the way back. The sun was shining & it was a glorious day, which I think helps. We agreed with our Son, who, on his return back to the Stables said "I can almost taste the happy atmosphere here, it is bright & not dark, miserable & dingy, like where I work. The horses are well looked after & enjoying life, & I would jump for joy if I could work here".

Sorry that this is in the wrong order, but when we arrived & before we had been shown around, but after his CV had been read, he was asked if he may be interested in accepting a vacancy that was coming up shortly. He couldn't say "yes" quick enough. Just before leaving the Stables he was told that they would ring in a couple of days, as they would need to discuss it first, so we are hopeful of a successful outcome for him. We know that he is capable of doing the job & would not let them down. He is dedicated to his work & the horses & would work for free if he could afford to do so. It would be a fantastic opportunity to broaden his career, maybe travel & meet new people. He lives & breathes horses & it would be heaven sent if he could work there.

So please keep you fingers crossed for him & hope that he is offered this chance? He really does deserve a chance to prove that he can shine & be happy.

By the way, his jaw is healing nicely & he can now open his mouth enough to speak well again. For the first 3 weeks he couldn't open his mouth enough to get a grain of rice through his lips, so we had to do all of the talking for him. So it was great that he was able to speak for himself yesterday. At first, I nearly forgot to let him speak, having been used to doing it for him until about a week or so ago. But I very quickly explained & we all laughed together about it, so the Whitaker's understood that I now had to get used to him speaking for himself - Thank Goodness - I can talk for England as it is. Ha! Ha! But he is still on soft food "Baby Food" as he calls it. His bruises have almost gone & the skin that was debrided off his chest & arm is almost healed - most remarkable really. Where the skin had come off one of his arms it has almost healed too. The tightness has almost gone, because we have been putting cream on since the accident & he almost has the flexibility fully when he stretches out his arm. The new skin is still very sensitive to the touch though, but hopefully that will get better in time. His broken teeth still need to be pulled out, but the Maxio said that they would do that when his has healed full & they can open his mouth fully. Other than that, he is fit & well & eating everything in site - we don't know where he puts it all. But if eating extra food makes his recovery quicker, we are not complaining. We never would, after all, it could have been worse.

He is going to see the Maxio Facial on Monday & I will send an update as soon as we hear something - Thank you everyone for your interest & support.

Have a lovely weekend all of you.
