  1. I wonder if any of the Gedling boys remember the school visit to the colliery?  We were all kitted out with helmets complete with miners lamps and went down the mine shaft, onto a man-rider taking us to a coal face.  A bit spooky but exciting none the less.  Back up top, after a wash and a scrub up, we were taken to the canteen for a meal!

Here is a picture of some surface workers circa 1965, note the gantry and bucket on the spoil heap.  Instead of concentrating on learning we were easily distracted,  guessing where and when the bucket would tip.

The spoil tip is now being flattened in readiness for new housing.

  2. Thanks Will, 1964 is a long time ago and I can remember you opening with 'The Cruel Sea' and being blown away by the intensity (or maybe the volume) of what was my first experience of live music.  Don't remember anything else so don't know what else was on your playlist.

Cavendish seemed to be ahead of Gedling as far as school groups were concerned.  Did you happen to know Pete Mee or Graham Pearce who I think went there and played in various bands?

  3. Ian, spent many a happy hour in the company of Mike in the 60's.  As part of a group that resided in Mapperley we were always in each others houses so I knew both his Mum and his Dad.  When out and about with him we were often halted by a wall and informed "that's Flemish Bond' you  know"!

Driving along Mapperley top a month or two ago I'm sure I spotted him outside the Co-op but I haven't had any contact with him for well over 35yrs.  As for Elaine, I have met her but it was a long while ago.

  4. Rob, I think the picture would have been taken in the 60's when they started building on the land behind what was once Wardles's garage (i.e.before Wheelhouse had it).   We used to play football and go sledging in the fields which stretched downhill all the way to the railway line.  There was a small access path alongside the garage from Plains Road.

The following picture is a reminder of what Somersby Road used to look like, circa 1948.  There have been a lot of changes since then!

  5. Back to the music.  After seeing The Tykons at school it was a natural progression to seek out more live music.  Unlike some of my schoolmates who ventured to exotic places like The Dungeon and the Boat clubs, I stayed fairly close to home and below is a list of some of the groups that I had the pleasure of hearing (most of them anyway).  I'm sure some of the other NS's would have been there!  As you can see, I was a dab hand with the typewriter, my hand writing would have been illegible.

  6. mikede, remember the long walk down (and back) to Digby to play football.  Boots with nailed in studs slung round my neck (after tying the laces together that is).  On match days I often had the honour of applying the 'dubbin' to the leather ball prior to the game!

Mr Heal (with a limp) was headmaster and I think Mr Garwood took us for PE.

Thought I'd taken a photo of the school before it was demolished but unfortunately I can't find it!

  7. If you were a pupil at Gedling School in the 60's the chances were you went to one of the local youth clubs.  On previous threads The Memorial hall has been mentioned and the following ticket relates to an event organised by the church.  I remember helping to prepare the field and was put in charge of a motor mower and had to try and make an area for dancing!  The group stage, if I remember correctly, was a farm trailer,  not sure if it was covered but then it didn't rain in those days!
