Have seen the thread a relative did one branch and at the moment is not able to carry on and as I am doing research on another branch thought I would have a look at it.

Wow you lot are great,I knew there was an obit but had never seen it ,I don't think Mount Hooton Rd was named after them but thats another avenue to go down and check,when William Arthur Hooton lived there it was a white building and called Forest Lodge but has now been painted an ugly grey and is a care home.I think that perhaps he was just being egoistical to buy the house.William Arthur Hooton never married but did father two children it has made finding things out a little difficult as the family denied all knowledge.

Hi everyone,Wasn't sure where to put this post so thought I would start a new one.
During my family research I discovered that one branch of my family were called Hooton and had at least one factory in the late 1800s and maybe a couple more in the early 1900s making machines and parts for lace machines,one of their factories was on Great Eastern Street,I have been looking for a photo/photos of the Hootons for my family tree with no success,can anyone come up with any ideas where I could look.

Dr Cochrane saved my mam and my sisters life when mam had a bad fall during late pregnancy,mam always said he was a very hairy man.
Anyone heard of Nurse Eaton who seemed to deliver most of the babies on the green .

My husband and I met in the Old G he was working there part time(not the Old G) and I was out with the girls,that was in the 60s we got married in St Pauls just down the road.
Apparently when the new buildings done he will be incorporated back somewhere in the building.

I went to this place in the early 1950s with one of my sisters ,I was nearly 6 the first time I went we went the following year as well ,I will be 69 this year and can still remember it,a nightmare from hell.I remember the "matron" well you held your breath when she went passed.
Breakfast a bowl of milk with cereal floating in it and a very hard boiled egg,there was always cabbage at lunch time and bread and marg or dripping at supper ,no talking at lights out or till you got up in the morning,Schhool for half a day it was the school holidays for godsake,church on sunday with scratchy grey blazer and a hat that kept slipping down .The first night you had to have a bath and every child had nit treatment whether you needed it or not.
When my own children got to that age I wondered how could my mum and dad send me to that place but i suppose you only remember certain things but those things made a lasting impression on me.

Morning MargeH,Didn't have a nickname just picked it out as I had lots of them when younger.
Cant see anyone in my tree with the name Bernard and Mary gibney have you got any dates to go with them or other family members.

I was at berridge in the 50s infants and then juniors and then girls went to Bentinck girls school. My brother Pete Gibney was in the senior boys but that would have been in the 40s as he was about 10 years older than me ,my sister Barbara (older than me) and my late sister Sheila (younger than me ) were also at Berridge. I remember the big rocking horse in one of the infant classrooms the teacher was called I think Mrs Peake and she always wore a smock and I'm sure there was a rope hanging from the ceiling .I can't remember much more about the infants its such a long long time ago.

Im sure there was a Soar family that lived on Pleasant Row Hyson Green I seem to remember a Patty Soar ,I think I have a class photo from Berrigde juniors.

The street name didn't ring a bell so I googled it ,as far as I know we didn't have close family in St Anns, I have traced the family back as far as 1779 and its a big far ranging family so it could be ,will check out my tree and see if I can find a link.

Im looking for a map that shows where off Bridlesmith Gate Rose Yard was,theres no sign of it now ,in my family searching it shows that in the 1851 census that Rose Yard was where my family lived.Ive seen a sketch of Rose Yard and a few maps but I can't seem to find exactly where the entrance was. Hi Everyone,I found the forums by accident i was looking for old pictures and maps of Rose Yard off Bridlesmith Gate as part of my family history research and saw a post about Berridge Road school ,I went to Berridge infant and junior school as did my brother and sisters,I went to Berridge in 1952 Miss Smith was head in the infants and Mr Griffiths was head in juniors after that I went to Bentinck girls school.I lived in Kirkstead Terrace Kirkstead Street till I was in my middle teens we then moved higher up the street which had had one of the bedrooms turned into a bathroom boy did we think we were posh.My name then was Gibney.Hope to hear from you all soon.Freckles

Living on Kirkstead street we used to have the dray horses and wagons coming down the street all the kids used to watch the sparks fly from the wheels and horses hooves and if there was any poo one of the kids used to knock on the door of the man who had an allotment to let him know.Horses and men were well turned out.
I wonder if thats where the saying comes from" watching the sparks fly."
