Enigma1st showed me this brilliant website run by Nottingham City Council. It started years ago as the NOMAD (Nottingham Online Maps And Data) project where they collated various geographical data and made it interactive and on-line. http://info.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/insightmapping Among lots of data it has historical maps and aerial photographs of the City and County areas that you can overlay with a current map. By using a slider, you can cross-fade from old to current to see how it has changed. At the top of the screen where it says 'Road map', select 'Historical'. You then have two sliders: the upper one selects the historical map and the lower one is the cross-fader. There are gaps in the data so sometimes you get a blank screen but in the main, it's really good. You can zoom in to a level where individual properties are outlined, with house numbers on the modern maps. SAVING/PRINTING: Clicking on Print (options) should allow you to print to PDF, JPG and other formats. It appears to create the output online then you save the image. Choosing PDF didn't work for me but I managed to get one as JPG. May need a bit of experimenting with the options. There's lots more on the site, particularly for manipulating modern data sets but I haven't explored further yet. Thank you again to Enigma1st for showing me this.
Hi All Bit of an appeal for help. Fairly new to the area and have started to do a 'just for fun' bit of research on the locality, which in my case is Sandon St. Specifically, I'm interested in the end near Nottingham Rd, and my ultimate objective is to get the full history of my place (#14) and a more general collection of stories, images etc, which I'll then put all together and post up here for anyone who may be interested to see it. So far so good. My basic research research runs from c1890 to 1917, when I know the Soar family, previously of #40 moved in. Easily obtainable records beyond his death in 1917 are a bit more tricky. They seemed to have stayed in Nottingham for generations , I wonder if they are still about at all? Anyone know anything beyond this? Also, I read a post on here a while ago suggesting Sandon St used to be Newcastle St. Anyone know how reliable that is? Searching old records, 2 candidates existed prior to Sandon St in 1894. However, one connected to Parliament St and the other was in the Park, so couldn't verify that theory. Would also love to hear about any business on the street you may recall, as I can see what looks like a few converted shops now being lived in. Really appreciate any stories or info anyone can provide. Much thanks! Steve
