Charlbury 7
50 years or so ago, kids used to sing a song with the words (as I remember them) "Wallflower, wallflower, growing up so high We are little children and we should never die except for (name), he/she is the only one Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake Turn your backs to the wall again." Does anyone else remember it and what do you think the words were? I've just been reading other versions and they have it swapped around so the children are the ones who will die except for the named one. While we're at it, does anyone know the full version of "I had the scarlet fever, I had it very bad"?
katyjay 5,091
Scarlet Fever! I had the scarlet fever, I had it very bad, They wrapped me up in a blanket and put me in a van, The van was very shaky, I nearly tumbled out, And when I got to the top of the hill, I heard the children shout, Mummy Daddy take me home, From this convelescant home, I've been here a week or two And now I wish to be with you, In comes the nurse with a red hot poltice Slaps it on and takes no notice Ouch, says the patient, that's too hot, Oh, said the nurse, I'm jolly sure it's not, Don't believe her, scarlet fever, The nurse said it was true, In the middle of the night, when the fleas began to bite, Itchy coo, itchy coo! I'm telling Mum, when I get home, The boys won't leave the girls alone They pull their hair and kiss them so, I'm telling Mum, when I get home, See that boy, who winks his eye, He says I love him, but he tells a lie, His hair won't curl, his boots won't shine, He hasn't any money, so he won't be mine!
