What was your sisters name, blueh2steve? I didn't go to Glaisdale but lived in Bilborough and she was probably about the same age as me.
-
I went to Glenbrook infants too and we went to the baths in Boden Street - this would have been mid-late 60's. It was horrible! My Grandma lived on Boden Street at some stage before she was married. Bet no-one can remember her, though, being as she got married in 1907....

What was his first name, Babs and did he live in Nottm when he enlisted? What was your Grandma's name?
-
You can perhaps get access to the Ancestry website at a Notts Library, to look at his records
-
Babs
Have you got your Mum's birth certificate? It might give her father's regiment and/or number

There are WW1 service records on the Ancestry website for a John Andrew Marsden of 12 Redoubt Street., born around 1896, father also John Andrew Marsden. He was in RFA. Is this him?

I remember going to watch Football matches there - probably late 60's/early 70's. My brother's friend played for Players - I think they were called Players No Names and played on a Sunday

My best friend lived on Chingford. I remember the shop used to sell single cigarettes!
-
My brother played for Basford United and other teams but can't remember which, in the 60's

If someone wasn't doing something right, my Mum would say "You're like a man wi' no arms"

Not quite, Bilbraborn......
He came home from work, probably in 1920's, and his wife, my Grandma, hadn't had time to build the fire - bearing in mind she had about 8 kids. He ran down the street shouting "Fire, Fire!!", so of course all the neighbours came out, asking "Where, Where?" He said "in every fu*ers house apart from mine"

Bugsy
If you played football in front of my Grandad's house in the 60's, I'm sure you'd have received some foul-mouthed tellings off from him - he was known for his "colourful" language!!

People could call themselves what they wanted as long as there was no intention to defraud. She could have been his partner of course, even if they weren't married. I haven't searched but you mentioned possible children. When were they born, and if late enough, was mothers maiden name given?

If the National Probate Calendar says widow, it doesn't necessarily mean that she was HIS widow
-
My Grandad lived in Chesil Cottages in the 60's

Dora Soar died 16/11/ 1927. She left a Will and her entry in the National Probate Calendar gives her address as 14 Sandon St

There was also a birth of a Carole E Capewell, mothers maiden name Hyett, born in Shardlow Registration District in 1938. Have found a marriage of a Capewell to a Hyett in Shardlow Registration Distrrict in 1935, but his name was Ernest H and wife was Florice

According to the 1911 census, 191 Norton St had 6 rooms (including a kitchen, but not including scullery or bathroom)

I bought 2 on the same day - Ball of Confusion by the Temptations and War by Edwin Starr. Singles were 50p in the early 70's, I think (a full book of Co-op stamps would buy one, I seem to remember!)

Thanks everyone for your kind words! As David says, it's like solving a puzzle - I'm a big fan of cryptic crosswords too! I do mainly Military research but also family history. Don't have time to do my own family anymore.......

Anyone remember Morgan Nilsen, who was my teacher for O and A level German ? I see in the Post online, today, that he has died. Sad news - he was a nice man.

It might be a good idea to get the marriage cert for Stephanie and Malcolm as it would give Stephanie's father's name, therefore enabling us hopefully to find out the names of any siblings she may have had - perhaps another way of tracking her down. It doesn't appear that she was born in Notts, on a quick look

There's this family on the 1911 census where names seem to match, but there may be more. Was she Edith May and what was Harold's surname and where would they have married?
