My mum also used to make her own pickled onions and pickled beetroot.
I used to eat them like lollies.Eventually I became allergic to beetroot and only came back to eating them in later life.
What good is a hamburger without a couple of slices of beetroot eh ?

banjo,try Fehlbergs pickled onions from Woolworths.They're the best ones I've found.

Personally I'd rather have 10 degrees than 36 any day. I hated the summers in Oz - and oddly, the Aussies seemed to too.
Not this little black duck.
I love it and I wouldn't trade it for the grey ,bleak days of winter in England.

The only good thing about autumn in the UK is the colours .
The rest of it you can keep.
I well remember the cold,grey bleak days.The freezing cold rain which eventually becomes sleet as winter comes in.

I showed all of your comments to an aquaintance of mine.This person is a high ranking member of the NSW Rural fire service.He also has Australian Aboriginal heritage.
His comments went like this.

Lizards(skinks),Possums,Parrots of many kinds,the occasional red bellied black snake,Indian Myna birds alias flying rats,doves,red back spiders.

This is climate change. I lived in Oz for 16 years (25 years ago) and we didn't have this problem then (not on this scale).

Perhaps these fires might not have been so bad if the stupid Greens political party had not had their way in restricting preventive burn offs.

Let's hope part of your taxes aren't being used to support the spotty kid 'cos he hasn't a job Baz.
Those spotty kids are usually high school kids trying to earn a few dollars.Some of them are pretty good but most of them just don't seem to want to be there.
Being an aged pensioner the only taxes I pay are the GST (goods and services taxes)So,yes if thay were on the dole I daresay I would be supporting them.

We use the self service checkout as much as possible here.
No problems and it's always quicker and more efficient than standing in a queue waiting for some spotty kid to cram all of the cool stuff into a bag with soap powder or such like.

The last time I was in the Vic.Centre (2010) there was a lack of seats for anybody who wanted or needed them.Some good take away food shops though but where could you sit to eat..................
Broad marsh is a different story.Places to sit but not many people to sit in those places.
Why would there be.It's a total disaster.
They should bulldoze Arkwright street through the way it was many years ago.
