  1. There was a case brought against Ryobi Tool Company. A labourer was cutting some wood on a contractors table saw, he was employed by a company and was cutting the wood freehand, no safety guard over the blade nor a riving knife attached to it to stop kickback.

The labourer hadn't been instructed "how to work safely" with the tool by his employer, well the blade "grabbed" the wood and pulled his hand into it severing a couple of fingers and seriously injuring the mans hand.

1/ I'd have dismissed the case had I been the Judge on the grounds that a manufacturer stipulates safety guards MUST be used and provides the guards etc, safety instructions provided etc.

2/ I'd have kicked the guy's lawyers rear end out of court.

Ironically, the fellers employer was not sued!! It cost Ryobi millions for something that was not their fault, kind of like suing Ford Motor Co, because a drunk driver killed their child...

To me, the employer was 100% guilty for failing to instruct the guy in how to use a table saw safely, and not making sure their was a blade safety guard and riving knife attached to the saw at ALL times..

I forgot, there was no fence either and he was ripping some wood!!! Totally asking to get injured!!

If the blade "grabbed " the wood and pulled his hand in to it,then he was feeding in to a blade that was rotating away from him.

WRONG,he should hace been feeding in to a blade that was rotating towards him.

I had an apprentice many years ago who did the same thing and the pice of timber he was trying to rip got dragged from his hand and speared into a block wall.If anybody had been on the opposite side it would have been quits for them.

I suspended the little sod for two weeks without pay.

  2. Thanks you guys.

I wonder why they would demolish an institution that did so much good for TB and cancer patients.

    Chasing the quids I suppose.

We had a rare old time while in there.I was a smoker at that time and when the doc was due to make his rounds the nurses would race around trying to get rid of the smell(not just me)so they wouldn't get in trouble for letting us smoke.

We were on the ground floor in the recreation room one day playing billiards when one of the chest patients came in and started asking for a ciggie. It turned out he had terminal cancer and couldn't see the point in abstaining as he was dying anyway.Poor sod.

Some of the other people actually had their clothes in there with them and would sneak out at night and catch a bus to a pub in Mansfield. My missus wouldn't bring my gear in.I've never forgiven her for that.

  3. Does anybody know if this hospital is still operating ( )

I and several other blokes were sent there from City hospital for recovery and waiting to get our stitches out because the city was overcrowded. This was in 1966.

Behind the hospital was what seemed to be a farmers field with a well worn pathway down one side.

We were told by one of the staff that there was a nudist camp at the far end of the field but we couldn't see nowt.

    Just wondering

  4. I must put my hand up to wearing the string version of underwear.

I always found it very comfortable in hot(that's a laugh)or cold weather. It did however leave a pattern on ones skin when one took it off.Got a few giggles from the girls that did.

Nowadays in the sunshine capital of the world it's just a pair of shorts and a singlet in the summer and as much clothing as i can get on in the winter.

  5. FFS Go to your doc and get him to send you for a CT scan.

If your problem is a damaged disc then no matter what excercise you do or what pain killers you take it will NOT be fixed.

The only hope of a permanent fix is surgery and even that is not a 100% guarantee.

I have a lower back that resembles a Meccano set now after surgery to fix the damage done by a fall at work, but,I don't have the pain that went before surgery any longer.

  6. Shipos........Yeeuk.

As a barman in the Horse and Groom I used to serve the stuff and was expected to drink a certain ammount of it to be sociable with the people that i was serving it to.

    Disgusting stuff.

If I cast my mind back I can still taste it.

Gimme a nice cold Aussie lager any day.

  7. We have the 'know how' to extract the brine from sea water.

What will it take for those in power, to wake up to the problems we face. The cost of installing a metre in every home and business is just a short term solution.

Money would best be spent on 'desalination plants'.

You wouldn't suggest that if you knew how much your water rates would increase because of it.

We are getting battered here in Sydney with water rates.Every drop we use is charged for because we all have water meters.

If you're told it won't affect your bill don't believe them.

  8. I lived down under for ten years, and being called a pommie bastard was a term of endearment. Mind you, it depends on how they call it you too, ie tone of voice...

But have you seen the size of city cops over here??? Too many donuts and coffee...

Your'e right about the Pommie Bastard John. thumbsup

If I had a dollar for every time I had been called that in my 44 years in Aus I would be a very rich pommie bastard.

Nowadays I suppose I could make a claim for discrimination.

Nah ! couldn't be bothered.I'll leave that to the other ethnics here.

  9. Bazza, you must not discriminate so much. Our beloved Government opens its arms and our wallets to more than the Afghans. What about the sudanese, iraqis, iranian, malaysian, timorese, chinese, vietnamese, somalian, ugandan, indian, sri lankan, burmese, ethiopian, bhutanese, congolese but to name a few.

We are a multi national country and should be proud of the fact that we support so many poor brothers and sisters from foreign lands with cash hand outs, housing, jobs and education at the expense of our own people. Why shouldn't we be forced to respect these poor immigrants and their cultures, religion, dress sense, flags, politics and beliefs just because they do not respect ours even when they are living in this country?

Pig Iron Bob would be turning in his grave.

    Sorry Trev I missed this.

I didn't mention the others cos for a start I can't spell most of em and secondly I get typewriter cramp easily these days. slywink

  10. Beefsteak, am reminded of the early 'Ah Bisto' signs where the two are smelling the aroma of the gravy whenever I look at our current and hopefully soon to be removed Prime Minister. Gillard has the same long pointed nose, rat features, same styled red hair and a stuck up attitude as the figure in green in the advertising pictures, particularly the later ones!!!!!!!!!!

mick2me...Tried for some time to put a picture on here but was not allowed : - You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community.

Thats a good description of our soon to be deposed PM Trev
