Speaking of bakeries, you've reminded me of Blanchard's at Watnall. We could smell that.

I worked at Raleigh and well remember the smell of oil. Also I used to walk past Players factory on Radford Blvd, coming to and from Raleigh to catch my bus. I remember the smell of Players too, a warm tobacco smell. One of the nicest smells from my teen years, was going into Burtons under the arcade on a Saturday for some bacon and cheese for me mam. They sliced both for you as you waited.

I do believe there was a cobblers on Drury Hill. Anyone of a certain age, goes all ga-ga over the name Drury Hill. Everyone wanted to keep it except the powers that be.

In the latest Bygones edition I received the other day, its all about the Falkland War, and there are bits about the Vulcan's role in this war. For those interested in the Vulcan:
"To mark the 25th anniversary of the use of Vulcan bombers in action during the Falklands War and the 50th anniversary of the type's entry into RAF service, Newark Air Museum is presenting an evening of Vulcan Bomber Memories.
The event will be hosted by Rowland White, author of the book Vulcan 607. It is in the Palace Theatre, Appletongate, Newark, on Tuesday May 22, at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost 8 pounds and they are on sale now. They can be bought from the Palace Theatre Box Office on 01636-655755 and the Newark Air Museum shop on 01636-707170. Cheques made payable to Newark Air Museum should be sent, enclosing a SAE, to Peter Robinson, 61 Harewood Ave, Newark NG24 4AN. Further details are available on the museum website at www.newarkairmuseum.co.uk."

Hi BiP, When we had our boxer dog, my mam used to buy 'lights' and boil them in a big pan of water. Boy did THEY stink, but he loved them. They looked like lungs, not quite sure what lights were, kind of spongy.

Actually mine was a 60's movie. My friend and I went when we were about 16 and saw The Telltale Heart. It scared the beejeebers out of us, I've never been to a horror movie since.

Hi Rob
I do believe it's still in use. I would love to have a look inside to see how it's changed, if it has. I remember the layout so well, I almost lived down there for a while! It was the biggest at the time it was built, I don't know about now. I used to work in the office block over the top of the bowling alley, I think it was called Barker Gate House, so as well as work at the B.A. and socialize there, I also nipped in to the snack bar at lunch times.
Which team did you play for, and when would that be. My hub played for the Skol 5, this would be around '67.

Not sure who Tutanic is, but Anne from Aspley has an 'E' on the end of her name. I'm trying to talk her into coming back on if only to say hi to everyone.

Met my husband in May 1967 at the Bowling Alley. He was in a team, I worked p/t behind the bar. Our first date was a Forest match, I'd never been to one before, and wanted to go the Trent End. Boy was that a mistake! I was pushed and shoved and whacked by stray hands going up to cheer. I spent the whole match giving folks dirty looks! LOL

Just received 2 Bygones today from my ma in law. One is about the Falklands the other is Nottingham Boys High School. Saw the latter and thought I'd got me knickers in a twist regarding a feature on all old schools [now gone] but I see it will be coming in May.

Hi Beefsteak, we used those words too. You forget them until someone reminds you.

I write to Anne regularly, she's alive and well. She had knee surgery last year, moved house, been to Spain for 10 weeks end of last year. I'll tell her she's missed, maybe she'll come back again.

Over here if someone is chatty, they talk a lot. In my Nottingham days, if you were chatty, you were dirty, like ground-in dirt.

We always fly BA direct into London, saves all the worry of making a connection over here, usually way back east where the weather is iffy, and they don't tend to lose your luggage if you don't change planes. Before BA started the Phoenix-London flight we had to change, and we nearly always lost a suitcase.

Rob, mine would say, 'it's not dead yet'
Same difference. Looking at what you write and I write about our mothers, I think Amesbury Circus had it's own language!

My dad and my brother were at that show, and came home with faces as white a sheet, my mum used to tell.

Mick, what years did you go to People's College? My husband went there, left in 1963.
