Oh, thanks for the Welcome Back! Got a lovely warm glow, now!

Anyway, back to Dolly Parton. I thought it was interesting how she said,'Ayup me duck.' She put the emphasis on the first syllable and it sounded like, 'Hey! Up me duck!'
Sounded a bit saucy to me.
Good book scheme though.

I remember shopping at Simmons on Wilford Road with my mam. They sold all kinds of pots - even chamber pots!

School dinners were compulsory at Brincliffe - we weren`t allowed to bring sandwiches either. They weren`t too bad - but you had to eat it all even if you didn`t like it. After dinner we used to be crocodiled down to the Arboretum for after-dinner play and some wicked gels used to go up to the Chinese bell gardens for a fag. (Allegedly)

I emailed our council recently to thank them for the neat tarmacking job completed on the pavement verges on our street and asking if they were aware that Severn Trent were digging them all up to renew mains pipes - only three weeks later!
A nice lady emailed back to say Yes, they were quite aware, thank you. And not to worry because the Water company were obliged to reinstate the verges and pavements to the original condition.
Oh - that`s all right, then - - -

Sorry to hear about your 'heart event' as they call them. I can agree with the opinion about the Trent Cardiac Centre. I had the choice of Trent or Glenfield for my aortic valve replacement and chose Trent. They were brilliant in every way. Even the food was decent!
I`m sure they`ll be working on finding the way forward for your problem.
Best wishes and good vibrations coming your way!

It`s good to be back - I`m going to take some time to browse the posts.

I`m not new at all but after my computer died some time ago I lost my information and when I got a new-ish laptop I couldn`t get back into this forum.
I thought it was forever but I went to the Facebook site and begged for readmission and was guided back into the fold- apparently by the redoutable Mick!
How clever you are!

A Merry Christmas and an even greater 2013 to all and Nottstalgia!
I was off line for a good while but, back with a sparkling new heart valve, I found the site still here and still thriving.
Gor bless us, every one!

Oh - the wooden shelters - scene of many a childhood game! Aaah, have they gone, then?

The big kids from Frank Wheldon School would come down to Gedling School for a scrap on the last day of term.
The word would go out - "The Frankies are coming down!"
One year the Geddles prepared for the big rumble but nobody turned up. Word had it that it was cos it was raining.

EileenH (#13), you didn't go to St. Trinians, did you?...lol
Sort of - Brincliffe actually - I`d have been one of the scruffy little ones though - not one of the blonde bombshell ones!

Mam bought my hockey stick from R&T`s and sold it five years later as 'almost new - practically unmarked'.
Not the greatest sportsperson, me.

I remember my friend and I walking home to Calverton through a dense peasouper - eight miles or so. The bus kept overtaking us, passengers cheering at us, and then crawling to a stop and we would pass it. We got home before the bus that evening.

Oh yes - that nice one from The Wizard of Oz - no, not that one - no - not the soppy one - -
I remember - "Ding dong the witch is dead!"

California Syrup of Figs
When he was about three years old my little brother got his hands on a bottle of this fruity stuff and before Mam could get it from him he`d swigged half the bottle
I don`t have to describe the aftermath do I? no2
(He didn`t seem to come to any permanent harm)

Mr Meducks or can I call you Ayup? That`s great, Long may it continue. !jumping!

I packed up 40 years ago after 15 years of smoking so I guess my lungs are back to normal now. Funnily enough - not funny really I suppose - my Dad died in his sixties with terminal emphysema (sp?). His lungs were totally shot and he never smoked at all. Worked down the pit, though.
(Paulus the little wood gnome! I remember that! Eee!)

Can anyone remember "Yer moant do that"
meaning Don't do that, or meaning if you do that you will regret it?
Oh yes! I remember that but I don`t come from dahn sarf I come from the Medders.
-
Yeah - I remember them - I think - but I never used them. I was a Park Drive smoker!
-
Thanks for that Cliff - I`ll certainly have a bit of a search.
-
No - I`m not selling it.
I`ve got a problem with my double glazed back door and I reckon that somebody on here will be able to advise me.
The rubber sealing strip has come out from round the edge of the door so now we get a nasty draught and the rain comes in when the wind`s in the right direction.
We asked the company who fitted it to take a look but the man said that because it`s over 15 years old that sort of strip is obsolete and we`ll have to have a new door and he could do us a nice one for £750 or so.
We gulped and told him we`d think about it but it`s getting a bit parky in the kitchen now.
Do you think he was right or just trying to flog us a door?

I was taken to D&Ps for my Brincliffe uniform in the 50s. I was the eldest of a big family and the cost was enormous and so was my uniform - to leave plenty of room to grow into!
I remember Mam muttering, 'I can take the tunic up for now and let it down as she grows and the blazer sleeves can fold up inside and the 'essential' list don`t say cardigan so she won`t need one o` them. What`s a science overall? What`s she going to do wi` a science overall? Oh - it`s 'essential' - flippin eck. It says ere she`s got to ave bottle green knickers - are they going to check up on them? Oh well, better do as they say. Bl**dy ell - look at the price of the beret (pronounced burette) you`d better not lose it!
I did, of course, lose my beret regularly. Then I`d go to lost property at school and pick the best one there and put up with getting into trouble with the prefect on duty for not having my name in it. My name was in everything! But because Mam didn`t have the money for posh name tapes they were written with marking pen on bits of white tape and badly stitched in by me so the tapes often got lost themselves.
Ee! D&Ps what a trigger for memories!

The photo of Forest Road brought back memories. I used to walk down there to school every morning - and run back to get the bus home every afternoon.

We had a new central heating system a couple of years ago and the old copper cylinder and pipes were left on the drive for the plumber (our son) to sort out. They`d only been there a couple of hours when a kind chap knocked on the door and offered to 'clear all that old rubbish from yer drive, darlin', no charge!'
He was so disappointed when I declined.
(Guess I should have been pleased he didn`t just take it without asking.)
