  1. Nothing macho about it. I asked my GP about 6 months ago thinking it was a good thing to be tested - she talked me out of it. Contact the NHS or Cancer Research UK and ask their advice. They are the experts aren't they? Well they advise AGAINST it. I listen to advice by the relevant authorities - you listen to god knows who. Who do you listen to?
  2. Carlton is fine - give the guy a break.
  3. You've all got Google. Tell me how many countries do random testing of the populace? I'll give you a clue - the answer is less than one. Why is that? Because the research by mainstream medical bodies are against it. Yes you'll find a few prostate cancer charities pushing it - but they would have to shut and all lose their jobs if they change their stance. Referral fees are commonplace and quite legal. Why are GPs going against the entire weight of specialists in the field? Fat wallets. That's why. You've all got Google - start showing me some facts. (They won't. They'll whine on about wh
  4. For heaven's sake - they get a referral fee.
  5. You are grasping at straws mate. All relevant research goes back decades. Nothing to do with dates. The findings are what the findings are but you choose to put your head in Bondi Beach. If you think that the Australian health service is so good - why do you disregard what they say about PSA testing? they are AGAINST it.
  6. You are like a religious zealot. Nothing on the planet will change your mind. Good luck. If you ever find that country that tests the population for PSA - let me know won't you? It's not the UK, OZ, NZ, Canada,USA,or any country in Europe. And let's face it, if it were about money they'd stop screening for breast, cervical, and bowel cancer. You listen to your gp - you know, that doctor that gets paid for every PSA test that is carried out. That is your 'informed' choice. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12911174 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11930979
  7. "Up to five in 1000 men will die within one month of prostate cancer surgery and between 10 and 70 men will have serious complications but survive," says the Task Force report. Meanwhile, it found mixed evidence on the benefits of screening. The Task Force reports that a US trial found no reduction in death from PSA screening, while a European trial found 1000 men aged between 55 and 69 would need to be screened in order to prevent one death. http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/05/22/3508167.htm

  9. So is the general populace of Australia screened? Nope. So why not? http://www.cancerscreening.gov.au/internet/screening/publishing.nsf/Content/449D837448F6BA03CA25752700062313/$File/joint%20prostate%20screening%20statement.pdf
  10. I hope that I don't have a needless operation that leaves me impotent too.
  11. All leading countries test the general populace for breast cancer. No leading counties test the general populace for PSA. Prove me wrong if you can.
  12. EDITOR'S NOTE: This blog was originally published on June 29. Due to recent questions on this topic, it's been reposted. News reports say the United States Preventive Services Task Force will next week release new recommendations saying that healthy men should no longer receive a PSA blood test to screen for prostate cancer. Reports say the USPSTF will say the test does not save lives and often leads to more tests and treatments that needlessly cause pain, impotence and incontinence. Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, says the Society cannot comment on
  13. A learned society that the rest of the world disagrees with? Hardly inspiring stuff is it? I just took this off their website: EDITOR'S NOTE: This blog was originally published on June 29. 14. The word 'estimates' means it's a guess. And what age group? Late 80s? Who cares at that age?
  15. Well that can't be true as only 25 out of 1000 deaths are due to prostate cancer. That figure would be many times that if what you say was true.
  16. The only information that matters is historical - if it hasn't happened yet it's just a guess. Check out Cancer Research UK and NHS. Forget those with a vested interest. If you want to take a gamble on the test then go ahead. It's your prostate that will sit in a bucket. Good luck.
  17. These are the key facts. Key statistics Nearly one in seven men aged over 55 with a normal PSA level will have cancer. Two out of three men with a raised PSA level don't have prostate cancer. One out of three men with a raised PSA level will have cancer. Two out of three men who have a biopsy don’t have cancer. Biopsies in one in five men fail to spot prostate cancer.
  18. ALL MEN FROM 55 TO 65 1 IN 3 WHOLD BE POSITIVE AND FROM THAT 1 IN 3 1 IN 5 WOULD NOT MAKE IT So what does that mean? I can't work it out.
  19. You can get glasses from the pound shop.
  20. But the vast majority of doctors working in that field don't recommend it. Either people believe you or the medical profession. Guess which they should listen to.
  21. The prostate cancer foundation are a body committed to testing - they aren't an independent organisation. Without testing they wouldn't exist - and many lucrative salaries would be lost. Now give me the figures from a legitimate source.
  22. Why don't you switch your caps lock off and start making sense.
  23. I knew Stephen Maloney from Colwick - he died a few months back.
  24. It's still mainly white british, so unless you are a tinkerman with a caravan you'll be quite welcome.
